Abstract

Tengku Amir Hamzah Stabat Square is a public space that accommodates all community activities in Stabat District and itssurroundings. The activities of street vendors who occupied public spaces raise pros and cons. Street vendors not onlyinterfere with the use of public spaces, but also provide social space and are able to attract people to gather and reviveactivities in public spaces. This study aims to reveal the characteristics and space-forming elements applied by streetvendors, due to the absence of studies related to the study of street vendor characteristics. This research is a qualitative andquantitative research with data analysis using descriptive analysis method. Data collection was carried out throughobservation and documentation methods as well as interviews. The results of this study indicate that the profilecharacteristics of street vendors are dominated by the adult age group (26-45 years) who still come from this neighborhoodor live not far from the research location with the last education level being SMA/ SMK (highschool). Street vendors in theresearch area sell food/drinks using carts/pushchairs. The elements that formed a public space applied by street vendorsare elements of comfort and image, access and linkage, uses and activity, and sociability. To create comfort and imageelements, street vendors provide physical attributes such as benches/chairs, tables, shade, games and music. Its strategiclocation due to close proximity to the city's bustling centers really supports the elements of access and linkage. The usesand activities elements offered by traders are places to eat or drink, play, relax, and recreation. Street vendors are able toaccommodate elements of sociability such as enjoy the panoramic view or scenery, meeting friends, interacting with otherpeople, and gathering with family, all of this because the variety of merchandise offered at relatively low price.

Abstract

Street vendors (PKL) are informal sector entrepreneurs who typically have limited capital in trade or service-based businesses, aiming to meet the daily needs of the community. They tend to choose strategic and high-traffic locations to conduct their business activities. The management of street vendors has become a significant issue in public space governance, as it must support informal economic activities while maintaining environmental comfort. However, in many cases, the spatial arrangement of street vendors remains unstructured and tends to disregard government regulations. This study focuses on the area surrounding the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD), Tangerang. It aims to analyze the level of compliance of street vendors with government regulations concerning public space management and spatial layout in the ICE BSD area. The research methods include direct field observation and policy analysis. The findings indicate that most vendors do not fully comply with the spatial regulations, resulting in space-use conflicts, a decline in environmental aesthetics, and disruptions to visitor mobility. Factors influencing their level of compliance include a lack of rule dissemination, economic necessity, and inadequate supporting facilities. The recommendations of this study include enhancing dialogue between local authorities and vendors regarding applicable regulations (through more intensive socialization efforts), providing designated spaces or representative supporting facilities, and enforcing the rules more firmly while still accommodating the economic needs of the vendors. Well-managed vendor arrangements will foster harmony between economic function, environmental aesthetics, and the sustainability of public spaces around the ICE BSD area.

Abstract

The livable housing program is one of the poverty alleviation efforts carried out by the Banda Aceh City Government. The implementation of livable houses has been carried out since 2008 until now. Livable houses built by the Banda Aceh city government used floor plans based on Indonesian National Standards (SNI). On the other hand, the city of Banda Aceh is the only city that implements Islamic Sharia, which should be applied in various aspects of people's lives, including their houses. A house as the smallest unit of the family should be a model for learning and implementing Islamic Sharia, including a livable house. Therefore, the aim of this research is to identify the application of Islamic architecture in design prototypes of livable house plans and analyze three case studies of livable houses in the city of Banda Aceh. The results of the analysis are then used as considerations in proposing design recommendations that are in accordance with Islamic Architecture criteria. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research, with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews and secondary data in the form of documents related to livable houses from the Banda Aceh City Public Housing and Settlement Area Service. Three livable houses in Banda Aceh built over five year period were selected to see post-occupancy implementation. Based on the seven criteria for an Islamic house, the results of the research state that (1) The current prototype of a livable house plan does not meet all the design criteria for Islamic architecture (2) After occupancy the placement of furniture and use of space also does not meet all the criteria for an Islamic house, however, residents are trying to arrange the houses with minimal use of furniture so that its function is more flexible (3) Two recommendations for layouts of a livable house type 36-38 are proposed that meet the criteria for Islamic architecture.

Abstract

Bandung is one of the cities experiencing rapid development in the creative industry, supported by various facilities, one of which is the Bandung Creative Hub (BCH). The Bandung Creative Hub serves as a platform for the community to create, innovate, and collaborate in various creative fields. However, the success of a creative hub in supporting the effectiveness of its facilities does not solely depend on the availability of space and amenities but also on the level of indoor comfort, which can influence the productivity and creativity of its users. Optimal indoor comfort creates a more conducive atmosphere for users to express their ideas and creative concepts. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the influence of indoor comfort on creative activities at the Bandung Creative Hub by examining aspects such as thermal comfort, lighting comfort, acoustic comfort, ergonomics, as well as aesthetics and spatial atmosphere. The research methods used include a questionnaire survey of visitors to the Bandung Creative Hub and direct observation to identify the conditions of spatial comfort. The results indicate that, overall, the indoor comfort of the Bandung Creative Hub is considered quite good, but several aspects still need improvement in terms of facilities and space management. One of the main concerns is the relatively high noise levels in certain areas, which may disrupt users' concentration when engaging in creative activities. Additionally, the spatial layout is not yet fully optimized to facilitate interaction and collaboration among users effectively. Based on this study, several improvements need to be made to the Bandung Creative Hub, particularly in enhancing facility quality, managing noise levels, and optimizing spatial arrangements to be more flexible and aligned with user needs. With these improvements, BCH is expected to create a more comfortable and conducive environment that supports productivity and fosters innovation in Bandung's creative industry.

Abstract

Hostile Architecture is a public space design strategy that aims to shape and control social behavior by preventing certain activities that are considered undesirable, such as sleeping in public places, staying too long in one spot, or gathering in large groups. This approach is often applied subtly through design elements such as street furniture that are intentionally designed to reduce comfort or accessibility in order to prevent misuse of space. One area that often experiences undesirable behavior is the pedestrian sidewalk along Jalan Dago, Bandung. This area, although it has high pedestrian activity, is also vulnerable to problems such as vandalism, crime, and other non-productive activities. This study chose Jalan Dago as a case study because its physical and social context is considered suitable for the application of Hostile Architecture design strategies. The main objective of this study is to develop a street furniture design model with Hostile Architecture principles to improve security, order, and social control in public spaces. The research method used in this design is a qualitative design-based approach, through participatory observation, field documentation, and literature studies related to user behavior and public space design. The analysis will focus on how specific elements—such as slanted benches, armrests, glaring lighting, and surface modifications—can discourage deviant behavior without completely eliminating the function of the space. The results of the study have shown that the characteristics of Jalan Dago can support the application of Hostile Architecture through appropriate design to the context. Therefore, several street furniture models are proposed to minimize the potential for negative activities, while creating a safer, more comfortable, orderly, and inclusive public space for its users.

Abstract

The Spatial Configuration of Street Food on Jalan Darussalam, Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City: A Qualitative Study The street food corridor of Jalan Darussalam, located in Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City, is one of the main roads with a strategic role in the activities of the local community. This road serves as a hub for economic and social activities, featuring various businesses such as shops, stalls, and street food vendors lining its sides. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors influencing the spatial physical setting of street food establishments in the urban space of Jalan Darussalam, Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City. Through field observations and interviews with street food vendors, consumers, and local residents, the study reveals that adequate infrastructure enhances the attractiveness of the street food area, increases vendors’ incomes, and supports food security and community welfare. This study employs a qualitative method with a behavior mapping approach. The findings highlight spatial variables such as location, distance, proximity, adjacency, and territoriality. Street food tends to concentrate in strategic locations with high accessibility, such as city centers, market areas, and major transportation routes. The spatial patterns, including the distance between vendors and their proximity to supporting facilities like terminals, offices, and residential areas, form a spatial network that contributes to economic and social activities. The adjacency of vendors creates clusters that serve as an added attraction for consumers. From a territorial perspective, street food connects various urban space functions but also has the potential to generate conflicts over space usage, particularly in densely populated areas.

Abstract

Indonesia’s geological location in an active seismic zone causes it highly prone to natural disasters, particularly earthquakes and tsunamis. One of the regions with a high level of tsunami risk is Aceh Province, especially the city of Banda Aceh. Kuta Alam Sub District as a coastal area of Banda Aceh is classified as a red zone for tsunamis. Several villages in this area have high population density and limited access to higher ground, thus rendering horizontal evacuation strategies less effective. In such conditions, vertical evacuation becomes a crucial alternative. This study aims to understand stakeholders’ perceptions regarding the utilization of Lampulo Community Health Center (Puskesmas Lampulo) as an alternative vertical evacuation building. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach through field observations and interviews. The findings indicate that Puskesmas Lampulo meets most of the criteria for a vertical evacuation site, including building height, structural strength, availability of supporting facilities, and accessibility. However, community awareness of the function of Puskesmas Lampulo as a vertical evacuation site remains low, even though residents recognize the strength of the building’s construction and are willing to use it in the event of a tsunami. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive coordination among relevant parties—such as Puskesmas Lampulo, the Lampulo Village Government, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), and the Health Office—has resulted in the absence of a standardized SOP for the use of the facility as an evacuation site.
