Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common health problems found in the community and can lead to serious complications if not properly controlled. Low public knowledge regarding risk factors, symptoms, and prevention of hypertension can influence health behavior and compliance in monitoring blood pressure. This educational activity aimed to increase the knowledge of residents in RT 09 about hypertension and to identify their blood pressure status after measurements were taken. The study used a pre–post test design involving 21 participants. The results showed a significant improvement in knowledge, where before the education session, 52.4% of respondents were in the “fair” knowledge category and only 19% were in the “good” category. After the education, the percentage of respondents with “good” knowledge increased to 81%. In addition, blood pressure measurements indicated that 61.9% of residents were categorized as having hypertension, while 38.1% were not hypertensive. These findings suggest that health education is effective in improving community knowledge and that the prevalence of hypertension in the area is relatively high, indicating the need for continuous promotive and preventive efforts.

Abstract

Hypertension is nicknamed the “Silent Killer” because it is a disease without typical signs and symptoms. Because it can cause a risk of death if the diastolic blood pressure in the body increases >140 mmHg and systolic blood pressure is at >90 mmHg and exceeds the normal limit (Manimala, 2015). WHO recorded that hypertension attacks 22% of the world's population annually, and reaches 36% of the incidence rate in Southeast Asia and Indonesia is the highest with a figure of 2397% of the total 1.7 million deaths in 2019 (WHO, 2021). This condition occurs when blood vessels receive higher pressure than they should, so the heart must work harder to pump blood throughout the body. According to the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), hypertension is a condition of high blood pressure in which the systolic pressure (top number) is more than or equal to 140 mmHg and/or diastolic pressure (bottom number) is more than or equal to 90 mmHg. The impact of hypertension can cause symptoms, and can lead to various serious complications, including: Heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, impaired vision, blood vessel damage (aneurysm), sexual disorders, and metabolic problems.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common health problems and a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. It remains one of the most serious public health problems globally. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, in 2024, approximately 1.4 billion adults aged 30–79 worldwide were living with hypertension—nearly a third of the adult population in that age range. This condition is particularly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, where two-thirds of those with hypertension reside. In Indonesia, according to a 2023 survey by the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), the prevalence of hypertension among people aged 18 and over was recorded at 30.8%. Efforts to treat hypertension rely not only on pharmacological therapy but also on non-pharmacological interventions such as the use of natural ingredients. One plant widely used in traditional medicine is celery (Apium graveolens), which is known to contain active compounds such as apigenin, flavonoids, and phthalides that play a role in blood vessel dilation and lowering blood pressure. Celery leaf decoction has long been used as a traditional remedy to help control blood pressure, but its use in the community is often not based on a proper understanding of its mechanisms. Therefore, the use of celery leaf decoction as a complementary therapy for hypertension sufferers needs to be studied and implemented more systematically to support safe, effective, and easy-to-administer blood pressure management using affordable ingredients.

Abstract

Purpose to increase the community's capacity to process local raw materials into hygienic, high-quality shredded meat products with extended shelf life, while simultaneously enhancing product appeal through better and more informative packaging. The training was conducted in a participatory manner, involving material delivery and hands-on practice, covering shredded meat processing techniques, selecting food-grade packaging materials, designing product labels, and maintaining simple business records. Ongoing mentoring was provided to ensure that the acquired knowledge and skills could be independently applied by partners in their daily production activities. The results of the activity demonstrated an increase in community knowledge and skills in processing and packaging catfish and palm mushroom shredded meat products, as well as a heightened awareness of the importance of product quality and the added value of local commodities. The resulting shredded meat products have the potential to be developed as an alternative source of income for rural communities. Overall, this Community Service Program (PKM) activity not only has an economic impact through increased product sales value but also a social impact by encouraging community independence and empowerment, and strengthening the role of universities in supporting sustainable economic development based on local potential.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Tract Infection (ARI) is an infectious disease that can affect the human respiratory system. ARI is an infection of the upper respiratory tract caused by microorganisms, including the nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx, which lack gas exchange (Mustafa et al., 2023). An estimated 13 million people die from ARI. The disease burden varies widely, ranging from approximately 4 million of the 13 million people in India (48%), Indonesia (38%), Ethiopia (4.4%), Pakistan (4.3%), China (3.5%), Sudan (1.5%), and Nepal (0.3%). New ARIs occur in almost every region of the world. In 2022, Southeast Asia had the highest number of ARI cases worldwide. Approximately 30 countries contributed to the number of cases. (WHO, 2022) The incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in Indonesia is relatively high, reaching 166,702 in 2022. This figure reaches 53% of the 50% target. Of this 53%, 31.4% of ARTI cases occur in toddlers. ARI is the second leading cause of death in children under five (12-59 months), accounting for 9.4%. This disease is an acute respiratory infection with symptoms of fever, cough lasting less than two weeks, runny nose/nasal congestion, and/or sore throat (Ministry of Health, 2022). In addition to medical treatment, ARTI treatment can also be supported by the use of natural ingredients. The combination of ginger and honey has been shown to have a synergistic effect in relieving ARTI symptoms. Red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) is a herbal plant long known and used by Indonesians as a traditional medicine. Red ginger contains active compounds such as gingerol, shogaol, and zingerone, which have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. These ingredients are useful in helping relieve symptoms of ARI, such as reducing inflammation in the respiratory tract, relieving coughs, and increasing the body's immune system.
