Abstract

This study investigated the effects of acidified turmeric powder with Averrhoa bilimbi L. fruit filtrate on gut health in broiler chickens raised under high stocking density. A total of 285 Lohmann strain broiler chicks (14 days old, 370 ± 9.02 g) were randomly assigned to four treatment groups: CONT1 (normal stocking density, 9 birds/m², basal diet), CONT2 (high stocking density, 16 birds/m², basal diet), BDTP (16 birds/m², basal diet + 1% turmeric powder), and BDAT (16 birds/m², basal diet + 1% acidified turmeric powder). At 37 days of age, ileal and cecal digesta samples were collected for bacterial analyze, and intestinal pH was measured. In the ileum, BDAT showed reduced coliform counts (p < 0.01) compared to control, while lactic acid bacteria (LAB) was decreased in all treatment groups. Enterobacteriaceae counts did not differ significantly among treatments. Cecal bacterial populations were not significantly affected by the treatments. Intestinal pH values in the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and cecum did not differ significantly among treatments. Acidified turmeric powder effectively recuce harmfull coliform while preserving the overall microbial balance reared high density. This findings highlight its potential as a alternative feed to promote gut health in intensive broiler production system.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of defects occurring in hydroponic lettuce and to analyze their causal factors using a fishbone diagram. Data were collected through direct observation during the cultivation and postharvest stages at CV. BWS Hydroponics. The findings revealed that the most frequent defects were torn leaves (6%) and perforated leaves (2%) out of a total harvest of 1,735 leaves. The fishbone analysis indicated that these defects were influenced by three main factors: human, method, and environment. Human factors included a lack of attentiveness during harvesting and sorting, while methodological factors were related to careless packaging techniques and limited storage containers. Environmental factors contributing to defects included pest infestations, such as grasshoppers and Spodoptera litura, as well as frog-eye spot disease (Cercospora sp.), which was exacerbated by high rainfall. The results further showed that CV. BWS Hydroponics performed relatively better compared to previous studies, as only two types of leaf defects were identified. This advantage was supported by more responsive pest control and postharvest handling practices. Recommended improvements include enhancing worker skills, implementing more disciplined standard operating procedures (SOPs), selecting appropriate storage containers, adopting preventive pest control measures, and optimizing plant spacing to reduce humidity. Therefore, the comprehensive implementation of these corrective strategies is expected to improve the quality and competitiveness of hydroponic lettuce in the market.

Abstract

Trichogramma japonicum is an important biological control agent used against Lepidopteran pests, and its mass production success strongly depends on the quality of the host eggs Corcyra cephalonica used for its development. This study aimed to determine the effect of storage duration of host eggs Corcyra cephalonica and the number of egg cards (pias) on the parasitization performance of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma japonicum. The research was conducted at the Parasitoid Laboratory of BBPPTP Surabaya using a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors: egg storage duration (no storage, 1 week, and 2 weeks) and number of pias (3, 4, and 5). Observed parameters included host egg quality and quantity, parasitization rate, percentage of adult emergence, and sex ratio of the parasitoid. The results showed that egg storage duration significantly affected all observed parameters. Fresh eggs without storage produced the highest quality, with normal egg percentages reaching 97%, while two-week storage significantly reduced egg quality to below 68%. The highest parasitization rate was obtained from the combination without storage and three pias (P1V1), reaching 84.57%, whereas two-week storage reduced parasitization to around 66%. The highest adult emergence (87.83%) also occurred in P1V1, while the lowest was observed in P2V3 (74.29%). Similarly, the highest female proportion was recorded in P1V1 (86.67%), and the lowest in P2V3 (71.33%).

Abstract

The pre-nursery stage represents an initial phase that strongly influences the subsequent quality of oil palm seedlings. Nevertheless, information regarding leaf morphology and biomass distribution of oil palm seedlings under organic fertilization and water management remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate leaf morphological traits and biomass allocation of oil palm seedlings in response to oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) compost application and different watering intervals during the pre-nursery stage. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with two factors and three replications, consisting of EFB compost rates and watering intervals. Observed variables included leaf area, leaf number, dry weight of leaves, stems, and roots, as well as shoot–root ratio. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance at the 5% significance level and followed by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test when significant effects occurred. The results indicated no interaction between EFB compost application and watering intervals for all observed parameters. Individually, both treatments did not significantly affect leaf morphology or biomass distribution. However, a numerical tendency of increased plant biomass was observed up to an EFB compost rate of 225 g per polybag, suggesting that seedling responses during the pre-nursery stage develop gradually rather than immediately

Abstract

Setya Agrofarm is a business engaged in agriculture, especially hydroponic vegetables with commoodities being lettuce, a business that has only been operating for two years. The research location is located in Blimbing Village, Boja District, Kendal Regency. Setya Agrofarm in hydroponic lettuce cultivation using the NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system. One of the problems faced in the agricultural business is the uncertainty in vegetables sales, causing conditions of shortage or excess supply, which occurs several times, therefore the importance of forecasting. This uncertainty is caused by several factors including price, weather, and market competition. The respondent sampling techniques uses Nonprobability sampling, namely snowball sampling. This technique was chosen because the data came from the first source which was incomplete and then required information from other sources. The number of forecasting methods, Setya Agrofarm requires an appropriate forecasting method to deal with supply uncertainty and sales trends, the purpose of this study is to determine the best quantitative forecasting method including Naïve, Moving Average, and the single exponentiant smoothing method based on he results of the smaller MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error). The results of the study showed that the most accurate method was to forecast sales using the Moving Average method with a MAPE value of 27.53% at length, this method can be used as a reference for Setya Agrofarm in Forecasting the next one-year period.
