Abstract

Critical Discourse in the Malin Kundang Folktale: An Analysis of Mythology and Power in Minangkabau Culture. This study aims to analyze power relations, the naturalization of values, and the construction of mythology in the Malin Kundang folktale. The study uses a qualitative approach with a Critical Discourse Analysis design that combines the perspectives of power–discourse and mythological theory. The data in the form of story texts are analyzed through stages of reduction, categorization, and interpretation of narratives that represent mother–child relations and symbols of punishment. The results of the study indicate that disobedience is constructed gradually through changes in social status and identity conflicts; the mother's authority is legitimized as the moral center of the family; and the transformation into stone functions as a mythologization mechanism that naturalizes the norm of obedience. The conclusion of the study confirms that folktales act as discursive practices that reproduce power relations and shape moral subjects in Minangkabau culture.

Abstract

This study explores the expression of ludus love in popular teenage pantuns on the social media platform TikTok. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, ludus refers to a playful and non-committal type of love. John Lee (1973) classified ludus as a love style that prioritizes amusement and light-hearted interaction rather than deep emotional commitment. Such characteristics align with the nature of today's digital youth communication, which is expressive, instantaneous, and algorithm-driven. This research applies Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic approach, which consists of three interpretive stages: explanation (structural analysis), understanding (contextual interpretation), and appropriation (reader's internalization of meaning). This method provides a comprehensive framework to uncover symbolic meanings embedded within seemingly simple pantuns. The analysis of pantuns reveals three dominant forms of ludus love: playful love, flirtatious love, and love without commitment. These forms serve not only as emotional expressions but also as strategic tools for communication and identity construction in digital youth culture. Consequently, digital pantuns are no longer seen merely as traditional verse but have transformed into performative and symbolic media reflecting the dynamics of contemporary teenage romance..

Abstract

The naming of a region (toponymy) is not merely a geographical label, but rather a linguistic artifact that stores the collective memory and cultural identity of its people. This study aims to dissect the construction of the cultural identity of the South Minahasa community through the meaning of village names from an anthropolinguistic perspective. Using a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnosemantic approach, data were collected through historical document studies, field observations, and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders (Tona'as). The results of the study indicate that the toponymy in South Minahasa consists of 8 villages, namely: Menara city, Maliku and Maliku 1, Ritey, Malanos Baru, Lopana and Lopana 1, Pinalin, Pondang, and Ranomea. These 8 toponyms fall into four main categories: (1) flora and fauna aspects (bioglyphs), (2) geographical aspects (geoglyphs), (3) historical events, and (4) hopes or theological values. The identity construction found represents the deep attachment of the Tou Minahasa community to nature (cosmology) and the spirit of ancestral heroism. The implications of this research emphasize that preserving toponymic meaning is a crucial strategy for maintaining the vitality of local culture amidst the tide of modernization.

Abstract

In the context of learning Indonesian as a foreign language, limited vocabulary often becomes one of the main obstacles that hinder learners from communicating effectively. To overcome this limitation, learners frequently employ various communication strategies that allow them to maintain interaction despite gaps in linguistic competence. Understanding how these strategies are used is essential for improving the effectiveness of Indonesian language teaching for foreign learners (BIPA). This study aims to identify and analyze the compensation strategies employed by BIPA learners in Vietnam when dealing with limitations in Indonesian vocabulary during classroom interactions. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The study was conducted at Ho Chi Minh City Open University, Vietnam, involving Vietnamese students enrolled in an Indonesian language class. Data were collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation of learners’ utterances during learning activities. A total of 20 instances of learner utterances and communicative behaviors indicating the use of compensation strategies were identified and analyzed. Data analysis followed the qualitative analysis model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that BIPA learners employ several types of compensation strategies to maintain communication. These strategies include code-switching, lexical borrowing, lexical approximation, circumlocution, and gestural strategies. Among these strategies, lexical borrowing from English was found to be the most frequently used, indicating the role of English as a linguistic support in communication. Nonverbal strategies such as gestures were also commonly used to clarify meanings when learners lacked appropriate vocabulary. The study suggests that compensation strategies play an important role in sustaining communication and supporting the development of learners’ communicative competence. Therefore, BIPA instruction should adopt communicative and contextual approaches that allow learners to utilize such strategies while gradually expanding their vocabulary repertoire.

Abstract

Indonesian language learning at the senior high school level is expected to foster advanced literacy, particularly students’ ability to interpret, evaluate, and respond critically to texts within their social contexts. Anecdote texts are relevant for this purpose because they contain humor, satire, and social criticism that require interpretive and ethical understanding. Existing teaching materials, however, tend to emphasize linguistic aspects and final tasks rather than systematic guidance for critical reading and value internalization. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of anecdote text teaching materials based on the Athirah Integrated Holistic Education System and the social inquiry method in Indonesian language learning. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using document analysis and qualitative content analysis. The data source was the teaching material book The Art of Criticizing with a Smile. The analysis framework combined indicators of the Athirah Integrated Holistic Education System, stages of social inquiry, and teaching material quality, including content, presentation, language readability, and graphics. The findings show that the teaching materials are systematically organized into six learning units and explicitly integrate the holistic components of mind, heart, soul, spirit, and body. The materials also consistently apply social inquiry stages through orientation, definition, exploration and verification, and generalization. These characteristics indicate that the teaching materials support critical literacy, ethical communication, creative writing, and students’ social awareness. The study concludes that the integration of the Athirah Integrated Holistic Education System and social inquiry provides an innovative and meaningful framework for anecdote text teaching materials in Indonesian language learning.
