Abstract

This study aims to analyze disaster warning signs in Padang City, West Sumatra, using a multimodal approach within the framework of linguistic landscape studies. As a disaster-prone area vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis, Padang provides a critical context to examine the effectiveness of visual and verbal communication in disaster warning systems. Data were collected through field observations and visual documentation of disaster signs in strategic locations. The findings reveal that these signs combine linguistic elements (monolingual and bilingual), visual components (symbols, colors, images), and strategic placement following national regulations. Symbols such as tsunami waves, tall buildings, and evacuation arrows enhance public understanding. However, the current signage design lacks inclusivity for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and persons with disabilities. Moreover, the integration of local cultural context and indigenous knowledge remains limited. This study emphasizes the importance of a holistic and inclusive approach to disaster signage design, one that not only complies with technical standards but also considers the social, cultural, and psychological dimensions of the community. The findings offer valuable insights for improving disaster communication systems to be more effective and adaptive for multilingual and multicultural societies.

Abstract

Critical Discourse in the Malin Kundang Folktale: An Analysis of Mythology and Power in Minangkabau Culture. This study aims to analyze power relations, the naturalization of values, and the construction of mythology in the Malin Kundang folktale. The study uses a qualitative approach with a Critical Discourse Analysis design that combines the perspectives of power–discourse and mythological theory. The data in the form of story texts are analyzed through stages of reduction, categorization, and interpretation of narratives that represent mother–child relations and symbols of punishment. The results of the study indicate that disobedience is constructed gradually through changes in social status and identity conflicts; the mother's authority is legitimized as the moral center of the family; and the transformation into stone functions as a mythologization mechanism that naturalizes the norm of obedience. The conclusion of the study confirms that folktales act as discursive practices that reproduce power relations and shape moral subjects in Minangkabau culture.

Abstract

This study explores the expression of ludus love in popular teenage pantuns on the social media platform TikTok. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, ludus refers to a playful and non-committal type of love. John Lee (1973) classified ludus as a love style that prioritizes amusement and light-hearted interaction rather than deep emotional commitment. Such characteristics align with the nature of today's digital youth communication, which is expressive, instantaneous, and algorithm-driven. This research applies Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic approach, which consists of three interpretive stages: explanation (structural analysis), understanding (contextual interpretation), and appropriation (reader's internalization of meaning). This method provides a comprehensive framework to uncover symbolic meanings embedded within seemingly simple pantuns. The analysis of pantuns reveals three dominant forms of ludus love: playful love, flirtatious love, and love without commitment. These forms serve not only as emotional expressions but also as strategic tools for communication and identity construction in digital youth culture. Consequently, digital pantuns are no longer seen merely as traditional verse but have transformed into performative and symbolic media reflecting the dynamics of contemporary teenage romance..

Abstract

The naming of a region (toponymy) is not merely a geographical label, but rather a linguistic artifact that stores the collective memory and cultural identity of its people. This study aims to dissect the construction of the cultural identity of the South Minahasa community through the meaning of village names from an anthropolinguistic perspective. Using a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnosemantic approach, data were collected through historical document studies, field observations, and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders (Tona'as). The results of the study indicate that the toponymy in South Minahasa consists of 8 villages, namely: Menara city, Maliku and Maliku 1, Ritey, Malanos Baru, Lopana and Lopana 1, Pinalin, Pondang, and Ranomea. These 8 toponyms fall into four main categories: (1) flora and fauna aspects (bioglyphs), (2) geographical aspects (geoglyphs), (3) historical events, and (4) hopes or theological values. The identity construction found represents the deep attachment of the Tou Minahasa community to nature (cosmology) and the spirit of ancestral heroism. The implications of this research emphasize that preserving toponymic meaning is a crucial strategy for maintaining the vitality of local culture amidst the tide of modernization.

Abstract

This study explores how integrating cross-cultural communication strategies with technology can revolutionize the teaching of Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) and enhance its role as a tool for cultural diplomacy. The research analyzes the experiences of BIPA teachers and learners at two universities in West Sumatra involved in the Darmasiswa program. Data were collected through semistructured interviews, direct observations, and document analysis to uncover strategies for addressing cross-cultural challenges and the role of technology in improving learning effectiveness. The findings reveal that combining cross-cultural communication with technology-based media, such as interactive videos, gamification applications, and online learning platforms, enhances cultural understanding and learning motivation. Practical simulations, such as role-playing and cultural discussions, enable learners to grasp Indonesia's socio-cultural context more deeply. However, limitations in technological literacy among teachers and learners, as well as cultural gaps, remain significant challenges. This study highlights the need for comprehensive training for teachers to maximize the potential of technology in education and the development of inclusive, culturally oriented teaching materials. These strategies improve learners' language competencies and strengthen cross-cultural relationships, positioning BIPA as an effective instrument for Indonesia's cultural diplomacy in the digital era.

Abstract

In the context of learning Indonesian as a foreign language, limited vocabulary often becomes one of the main obstacles that hinder learners from communicating effectively. To overcome this limitation, learners frequently employ various communication strategies that allow them to maintain interaction despite gaps in linguistic competence. Understanding how these strategies are used is essential for improving the effectiveness of Indonesian language teaching for foreign learners (BIPA). This study aims to identify and analyze the compensation strategies employed by BIPA learners in Vietnam when dealing with limitations in Indonesian vocabulary during classroom interactions. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The study was conducted at Ho Chi Minh City Open University, Vietnam, involving Vietnamese students enrolled in an Indonesian language class. Data were collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation of learners’ utterances during learning activities. A total of 20 instances of learner utterances and communicative behaviors indicating the use of compensation strategies were identified and analyzed. Data analysis followed the qualitative analysis model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that BIPA learners employ several types of compensation strategies to maintain communication. These strategies include code-switching, lexical borrowing, lexical approximation, circumlocution, and gestural strategies. Among these strategies, lexical borrowing from English was found to be the most frequently used, indicating the role of English as a linguistic support in communication. Nonverbal strategies such as gestures were also commonly used to clarify meanings when learners lacked appropriate vocabulary. The study suggests that compensation strategies play an important role in sustaining communication and supporting the development of learners’ communicative competence. Therefore, BIPA instruction should adopt communicative and contextual approaches that allow learners to utilize such strategies while gradually expanding their vocabulary repertoire.

Abstract

The Arabic-Malay script was a writing system used by the Malay society in the Indonesia archipelago starting from the 13th century. Since the arrival of European colonization in the 17th century until the 20th century, the Arabic-Malay script began to be abandoned because colonialism introduced a new education system that required the use of Latin script. Recently, the phenomenon of reusing Arabic-Malay script has become widespread in Riau, especially in public spheres. This research discusses the reuse of Arabic-Malay script in Riau public spheres from Linguistic Landscape (LL) perspective which refers to the concept of public signs and personal signs. This research was designed using qualitative descriptive methods. The research procedures carried out include an empirical survey of language signs in public sphere, classification of language signs, and analysis of motives for reusing Arabic-Malay script in public spheres. The results of this research conclude: first, the language used in public sign which written in Arabic-Malay script is Bahasa Indonesia; second, the classification type of signs in LL is public sign which is top-down by the local government; and third, the motive for reusing Arabic-Malay script is to reshape the Malay ethnic space in Riau's public space. In other words, the preference of Arabic-Malay script used on public signs shows that the identity of the place is indeed a symbolic marker of Malay ethnicity.

Abstract

This research delves into the inhibiting factors of pro-environmental behavior in Indonesia, with a particular emphasis on waste management challenges in Pekanbaru, a major contributor to Riau's waste production. It examines the gap between environmental knowledge and action, attributing the lack of pro-environmental behavior to insufficient environmental education and exploring the cognitive aspects of littering behavior through the lens of Social Learning Theory. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology, the study gathers data via interviews and observations, analyzing it through techniques of data reduction, display, and verification to identify key themes from 3 participants. These themes encompass individual factors such as awareness, knowledge, and attitudes; behavioral factors including practicality, intention, and lifestyle; and environmental factors like social pressure and result orientation, particularly within the Conservation lifestyle type. The research underscores the complex interplay of these factors in shaping pro-environmental behavior and suggests that future research should target behavioral changes that encourage pro-environmental outcomes. Acknowledging the contributions of the Islamic University of Riau and its participants, the study offers a foundation for further exploration in the field of environmental behavior.

Abstract

The competence of journalists is very important to ensure that the information that is presented to the public is accurate, balanced and of a high quality. Journalistic competence includes aspects of awareness, knowledge and skills that underpin accurate, objective and responsible reporting. In the context of the research in Riau Province, it was found that although it is recognised that journalistic competence plays a crucial role in ensuring accurate, balanced and quality information to the public, there is a gap in understanding among journalists in the region. In particular, this research highlights that journalists in Riau Province still face obstacles in fully understanding aspects of journalistic literacy. Data analysis using the qualitative method of in-depth interviews with the help of Nvivo 12 software shows that there is room for improvement in understanding the awareness, knowledge and skills that underlie accurate, objective and responsible reporting. Importantly, the need for a broader approach to all journalists is highlighted, suggesting that the solution to this gap is not only individual but also systemic. There is a need to develop strategies and programmes that involve the entire journalistic community in Riau Province so that the understanding of journalistic competence can be improved together. In addition, the application of competency scores also did not yield sufficient results, indicating the need for further evaluation of the journalist performance evaluation method. Therefore, this article is a call for a deeper change in approach to improve the understanding and application of journalistic competence in Riau Province. Through this contribution, it is hoped that research can provide a solid foundation for concrete steps to increase press professionalism in Riau Province, in line with the provisions of Press Law No. 40 of 1999.
