Abstract

Drug trafficking is one of main issue in Mexico. With its strategic geographical location, weak law enforcement in Mexico and the high demand for drugs from the United States have allowed the Mexican drug cartel to maintain its existence to date. With a border of 3,141 kilometers between the United States and Mexico consisting of deserts and barren mountains makes it difficult for the two countries to conduct surveillance in the border area. This is used by Mexican cartels to smuggle drugs into the United States. Drug trafficking carried out by the Mexican cartel not only has a negative impact on health, but also causes led to increased crime such as theft, violence, kidnapping and even murder in both countries. Mexican cartel activities pose a threat to the safety and health of citizens of the United States and Mexico. The two countries entered into a bilateral cooperation in the Merida Initiative in 2007 to tackle the narcotics problem. The purpose of this research is to see how the efforts made by Mexico and the United States in the Merida Initiative bilateral cooperation.

Abstract

Since the European Union (EU) began implementing the Renewable Economic Directive (RED) policy, it mainly talks about banning Indonesian Crude Palm Oil (CPO). Therefore, various efforts have been made by the Indonesian Government, in this case by President Joko Widodo. The purpose of this research is to explore the role of Joko Widodo and the state in dealing with EU’s Indonesian CPO ban. This research uses two theories; the theory of mercantilism analyzes the role of the state in managing its economy, while rational choice theory analyzes President Joko Widodo as the decision-maker in considering Indonesia’s policies. This research is a qualitative-descriptive research, which uses library research as its secondary data collection technique. The research also uses Miles and Huberman’s interactive model of data analysis. The results of this research concluded that Indonesia implemented industrialization policies and opened new markets, both domestic and international markets as a strategy to oppose the CPO ban by the European Union. Some of the industrialization programs include; B20, B30 to B100 programs, processing CPO to become new products, and opening up global markets in several countries that are considered to have great opportunities as export destinations for Indonesia’s CPO. This is due to the high consumption and demand for global and domestic palm oil, especially in the years 2017-2020.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women) against discrimination of women in the dowry tradition of India. This study uses the concept of feminism to find out the problem of female discrimination arising from the dowry culture in India, the concept of good governance to understand how the role of the government in handling the dowry issue and the concept of International organization to understand the roles of organizations involved in helping India handle the issues of discrimination stemmed from the dowry culture. This research is a qualitative descriptive research, which uses secondary data derived from library research as its data collection technique. The data is analyzed through five steps: reading, studying significances, data classification, finding patterns and framework construction. The results shows that violence in terms of the tradition of giving dowry is included in cultural violence, because dowry arises from the Hindu tradition which requires the bride to pay dowry to the groom before marriage. In resolving the problem of discrimination against women in the country, the Indian government is not only alone, the Indian government is also assisted by international organizations such as UN Women and CARE.

Abstract

This paper will discuss the motives behind the proposed and implementation of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in the Sunda and Lombok Strait during the first period of Joko Widodo's reign. During the first period of Joko Widodo's administration, Indonesia submitted a proposal for implementing TSS to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2017. This policy is one of several policies of the Indonesian government in the actualization of the vision of the Global Maritime Nexus (GMN). The two straits, both the Sunda Strait and the Lombok Strait, are considered to have the potential to develop into a busier world shipping route due to their advantages and geostrategic values. In addition to improving shipping safety, applying and applying for a TSS cannot be separated from the aspects of legitimacy, identity and international norms as the motive, based on constructivism. This research uses the following data collection technique: interview, documentation and library study that compiles both primary and secondary data. This research also uses Miles & Huberman’s three stages of data analysis namely, data reduction, data display and drawing conclusions. This research concludes that identities and norms can influence state policies, in this case the submission and implementation of TSS in the Sunda and Lombok Strait.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze why there are differences in South Korea's foreign policy towards North Korean nuclear weapon ownership under the Park Geun Hye and Moon Jae In regimes. This difference can be seen from President Park's policies which tend to be conservative and repressive towards North Korea, while the policies pursued by President Moon tend to be more cooperative and humanist towards North Korea. The two leaders are known to be the best samples representing conservative and cooperative foreign policy towards North Korea. This research found that the differences in the leadership policies of President Park and President Moon were largely influenced by internal and external factors including background, curriculum vitae, values, perceptions, domestic and international situations, reaction actions between countries and interference from other countries. This study uses the theory of foreign decision making, namely internal and external settings, as well as the concept of foreign policy to answer the problem formulation because both are able to explain why these differences in policy can occur. This research also found the fact that policy differences between the two regimes had a major effect on the security stability of South Korea and the Korean Peninsula area where President Moon succeeded in minimizing conflict between the two Koreas by using a cooperative approach and was able to establish good relations with North Korea through his New Sunshine Policy.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze how the development of Japan's defense policy affects the involvement of the Self Defense Force (SDF) in the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UN-PKO) especially in South Sudan in 2011-2017. This paper uses qualitative descriptive research model with secondary data. The data collection technique used is the study of literature by taking various reading sources such as books, journals, articles, official government portals as well as international news portals. Data analysis using Miles and Huberman models, namely the data collection stage, the data reduction stage, the data presentation stage, and the conclusion drawing stage. The results of this study show that the development of Japan's defense policy is influenced by Japan's response to international environmental conditions, strategy, defense doctrine, defense policy making process, changing military civil relations patterns, and relations with China and North Korea in the form of enmity. This further impacted the expansion of the role and responsibility of the Japanese SDF in peacekeeping operations, particularly PKO in South Sudan in 2011-2017.
