Abstract

The mother figure in Indonesian families is traditionally constructed as the guardian of moral values. However, the movie Norma: Antara Mertua dan Menantu depicts a radical deviation where a mother engages in an incestuous relationship with her son-in-law. This study aims to analyze the psychic dynamics of the mother character, Rina, using Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic theory. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research dissects visual and verbal data representing the three Lacanian registers: The Real, The Imaginary, and The Symbolic. The results indicate that Rina's transgression is not merely a moral failure but a structural collapse of the Symbolic order caused by the absence of "The Name-of-the-Father" (the husband's function) in the household. The study finds that the mother attempts to reconstruct her fragmented ego through the Imaginary phase by using her son-in-law as a mirror to reclaim her lost youth (The Real). This research concludes that the incestuous affair serves as a tragic defense mechanism against domestic alienation, ultimately leading to the destruction of the family structure.

Abstract

Tempeh is a fermented soybean-based food that plays an important role in meeting the protein and mineral needs of the Indonesian population. The fermentation process of tempeh involves the mold Rhizopus oligosporus, which contributes to the transformation of soybean chemical components through enzymatic activity. This article aims to review the role of Rhizopus oligosporus in enhancing protein and mineral bioavailability in tempeh based on a literature review of Indonesian scientific journals and academic books published over the last five years. The method employed was a literature review focusing on accredited national publications related to tempeh fermentation, protein digestibility, and mineral bioavailability. The findings indicate that Rhizopus oligosporus produces proteolytic enzymes capable of hydrolyzing complex soybean proteins into peptides and free amino acids, thereby improving protein digestibility and biological quality. In addition, phytase enzyme activity during fermentation plays a significant role in reducing phytic acid content, an antinutritional compound, which subsequently enhances the availability of essential minerals such as iron and calcium. The increased bioavailability of protein and minerals positions tempeh as a potential functional food that can contribute to improving community nutritional status. Therefore, optimizing tempeh fermentation using Rhizopus oligosporus should continue to be developed to enhance nutritional quality and strengthen the competitiveness of tempeh as a superior local food product.

Abstract

Reading and listening comprehension are essential skills in language learning that involve complex cognitive processes such as attention, working memory, inference-making, monitoring, and meaning construction. This phenomenological study aims to explore the cognitive experiences of final-year students in the English Education program during reading and listening activities. Through semi-structured interviews and written reflections, this study reveals students’ awareness of the cognitive processes they undergo, cognitive challenges such as limited working memory and unfamiliar vocabulary, as well as cognitive and metacognitive strategies ued to overcome these difficulties. Additionally, emotional experiences accompanying the cognitive processes, including frustration and satisfaction, were analyzed. The findings highlight the close relationship between cognitive and emotional aspects in language comprehension and suggest important implications for developing more effective and responsive reading and listening instruction. Further research with larger participant samples and diverse methodologies is recommended to enrich the findings.

Abstract

This study explores English teachers’ perspectives on the use of repetition as a cognitive strategy in teaching vocabulary to junior high school students. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through six in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis involving two experienced English teachers from a junior high school in Helvetia, North Sumatra. The novelty of this research lies in highlighting teachers’ viewpoints as the central lens for understanding how repetition functions cognitively and pedagogically in EFL classrooms. The findings reveal that teachers perceive repetition as a meaningful process that reinforces students’ memory and facilitates vocabulary retention through contextual and varied practice. Despite challenges in maintaining engagement, repetition was viewed as an effective and adaptable strategy that bridges psycholinguistic theory and classroom application. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of how cognitive principles can inform vocabulary teaching practices in EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of attention and memory in EFL listening comprehension from a psycholinguistic perspective. Listening comprehension requires rapid processing of spoken input under time pressure, which places heavy demands on learners’ cognitive resources. This research employed a quantitative correlational design involving undergraduate EFL learners. Data were collected using an attention task, a listening-based working memory task, and a standardized EFL listening comprehension test. Statistical analysis revealed significant positive relationships between attention, working memory, and listening comprehension. The results show that learners with stronger attentional control achieved better listening outcomes, while working memory emerged as the strongest predictor of listening performance. The findings also indicate a close interaction between attention and memory, suggesting that focused attention supports effective memory encoding during listening. These results confirm that listening difficulties are not solely caused by limited linguistic knowledge but also by cognitive constraints. The study contributes to psycholinguistic research by highlighting the importance of general cognitive mechanisms in second language listening. Pedagogically, the findings suggest that EFL listening instruction should consider cognitive load and learners’ processing capacity to support more effective comprehension.

Abstract

This study investigates lexical density in English and Indonesian academic prose using a qualitative contrastive approach. Drawing on authentic journal articles from comparable academic fields, the analysis focuses on how each language organizes and packages meaning in academic writing. The findings reveal that English academic prose tends to achieve high lexical density through nominalization and complex noun phrases, allowing writers to compress information and advance arguments in an abstract and cumulative manner. Indonesian academic prose, by contrast, often develops meaning through verbal clauses and explicit relational markers, resulting in a more elaborative and linear style. These differences reflect distinct discourse preferences rather than differences in academic quality. The study explains how such contrasts contribute to difficulties experienced by Indonesian writers when producing English academic texts. It also highlights the importance of contrastive awareness in academic writing instruction and evaluation

Abstract

The development of digital media, particularly live streaming, has led to new forms of social fundraising that utilize influencers as key communicators. One prominent phenomenon is the success of Windah Basudara, an Indonesian gaming content creator, in raising a substantial amount of donations through live streaming activities. This phenomenon highlights the importance of communication strategies in encouraging audience donation participation. This study aims to analyze the effect of communication strategies on audience donation participation in live streaming based fundraising activities conducted by Windah Basudara. This research adopts a positivist paradigm with a quantitative approach and a survey method. Data were collected through online questionnaires distributed via Google Forms to 100 respondents selected using probability sampling. Communication strategies were measured based on the five dimensions of Lasswell’s communication model communicator, message, media, audience, and effect while donation participation was measured through financial, affective, interactive, social, and cognitive dimensions. Data were analyzed using inferential statistics with multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicate that communication strategies have a positive and significant effect on audience donation participation. Effective communication strategies characterized by communicator credibility, clear and transparent messages, interactive use of live streaming media, and alignment with audience characteristics can enhance audience engagement in donation activities. These findings confirm the crucial role of communication strategies in the success of digital-based social fundraising.
