Abstract

This study investigated the perceptions of health department students at State Polytechnic of Jember, Indonesia, on how effective Wordwall helps them enrich their English vocabulary during online learning. The researcher used a qualitative approach. Data was collected from ten participants who were chosen based on their activeness while studying and who always participated in the teaching and learning process. It was collected through an open-ended questionnaire distributed via Google Form. Based on the result of the present study, the researcher discovered that the students had positive perception towards the use of Wordwall and they were very enthusiastic about learning vocabulary through the application. The participants also mentioned that this app offers a variety of interactive and creative vocabulary games. The disadvantage is that this application does not provide a place for students to explain their correct and incorrect answers. The students can learn about context and sentence changes by playing games. The result of the study also revealed that Wordwall is an effective learning media for enriching students' vocabulary. Thus, it is suggested that lecturers should utilize this application to help their students become more motivated to learn English vocabulary.

Abstract

Peer assessment is a fundamental activity aiming to involve students to participate actively in their own learning processes. In the context of EFL online learning, the peer assessment was conducted in the online mode as well. This study aimed to: 1) compare students’ attitudes in doing an online peer assessment in two different conditions of anonymity, 2) explore students’ perceptions of the anonymous and identifiable online peer assessment.  Seventy students of the English language education department in a private university participated in this study. Assigned to two different conditions, i.e anonymous and identifiable online peer assessment, the students were engaged in a Workshop activity, which was an asynchronous Moodle-based online peer assessment. Each student assessed three peers’ works as well as provide feedback comments. A questionnaire with close-ended and open-ended questions was used to investigate the students’ attitudes as well as perceptions of the different peer assessment formats. An independent samples t-test was performed to compare the attitude scores of both groups. The result indicated that students in the anonymous group showed a slightly better attitude compared to those in the identifiable group, yet the difference was not significant (t = 1.164, p > .05). From the questionnaire result, it was also found that the students in the anonymous group had more positive perceptions towards online peer assessment activity. These findings imply that while the anonymous online peer assessment is more favoured by learners, it might not be able to guarantee positive development in students’ overall aspects of attitudes.

Abstract

The study explores the application of culturally responsive pedagogy, differentiated instruction, and active learning strategies to foster a positive and productive learning environment for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Uzbekistan. The data consisted of semi-structured interviews with Uzbek State World Languages University students, the National University of Uzbekistan, and Tashkent State Pedagogical University. This research aims to identify effective teaching practices that meet the diverse needs of students. The findings, the importance of integrating culturally relevant materials and activities to increase student engagement and cultural understanding in the field of EFL education. The study's results that combine culturally responsive teaching, differentiated instruction, and active learning can support the academic and social development of students from diverse cultural backgrounds. This approach enhances language proficiency and promotes mutual respect and cultural appreciation among students. The study concludes with practical recommendations for educators to implement these strategies effectively, thus contributing to a broader discourse on equitable and inclusive education in multicultural settings. These findings offer valuable implications for educators, policymakers, and researchers dedicated to improving EFL education for culturally and linguistically diverse student populations.

Abstract

In-service teacher education has an important role in facing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including helping teachers prepare to face new challenges arising from the pandemic, improving the quality of learning, building online teaching skills, supporting students with ideals and hopes and building communities Study. This allows students to get access to quality education even though they are at home. Understanding the impact of the transition from blended learning to online learning is critical to seeing how this change affects in-service teacher training program students, particularly in terms of their stress levels. This research aims to reveal the phenomenon of stress experienced by students while undergoing a professional teacher training program as well as the indications and causes in terms of class, age, gender and place of origin. The type of research is quantitative comparative, the population consists of 418 people and 180 people as research samples were taken using purposive sampling. The results of the research show that Madrasah and PPG PAI, there is no significant difference in stress, nor in terms of age, no significant difference, the 43–49-year age group has a higher average stress score compared to others, with the average stress score was 71.10. Judging from the place of origin, there are differences in the stress felt by students. The average stress score for students in West Sumatra is higher than in the provinces of North Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Aceh, Central Java and South Sulawesi, as well as in terms of gender.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is garnering significant attention and anticipation for its contribution to the teaching and learning process at the Polytechnic of Road Transportation Safety in Indonesia. Consequently, this study offers valuable insights into the perceptions of cadets at a vocational college regarding the significance of the ESP course within the transportation engineering program. Specifically, this paper aims to explore the cadets' perspective on the role of ESP in their future careers. By conducting a qualitative descriptive study, four types of questionnaires were administered to a total of ninety second-year cadets who are pursuing a major in transport engineering. The findings reveal that the cadets/students recognize the importance of ESP as a crucial subject that supports their future employment prospects. Moreover, they acknowledge the appropriate allocation of time to ESP within their curriculum, recognizing its necessity for their academic success and eventual career advancement. Understanding the importance of ESP is crucial for cadets aspiring to work in the industry. Cadets must have a strong motivation to learn and familiarize themselves with core engineering concepts in order to establish themselves as competitive engineers on a global scale.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe (1) what are the text flow structures of the of students' English speech performance and (2) what is the non-text flow structure of the students' English speech performance in the Seminar on ELT course. Methods: This study was observed using an anthropolinguistic approach using analytical parameters, namely interconnection, valuability, and sustainability. A qualitative paradigm with an ethnographic model is used in this study by applying twelve steps both in interview and observation methods. Findings: The text flow structure of the of students' English speech performance has three important patterns, namely the introduction, body, and conclusion. It has the smallest elements called substructure. The substructure, there are greeting, question, and declarative sentences found in introduction. The substructure, there are transitional speech, guess, question, declarative, and explanatory sentences found in closing, and greeting closing found in closing part. In the non-text flow structure of the students' English speech performance found co-text and context elements, they are cultural, social, situational, and ideological contexts. In co-text found kinesics and prosemics. Conclusions: The text flow structure is the basic framework of a text in forming a coherent whole. The text and non-text flow structure is related to the text framework which is arranged regularly from beginning to end starting with the introduction into the conclusion. Both the text and non-text flow structures are very necessary to improve students’ ability to communicate well and creatively.

Abstract

Technology is considered as a learning assistant that can be used to improve speaking skills. In this paper, the researcher tried to enhance students’ speaking skills using English video blogging. The purposes of this research were to know how students’ perception of the use of English video blogging in speaking skills and to what extent video blogging improves students’ speaking skills. This study was done in one High school at Tangerang- Banten with 25 students in Grade XI. This study is a qualitative design with descriptive analysis in interpreting data, in data collection, the researcher used an observation (participatory observation) and depth interview with the participants. The result shows that students’ perceptions of the use of English video blogging to improve speaking skills are good and successful, and it can be seen about 80 % of the participant are having a good improvement in speaking ability. And the rest of them still feel lack confidence and fluency in speaking. Finally, the use of video blogging in classroom activities gives a good impact on students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

Integration of technology has penetrated into various fields, including education. With its constant development, technology is always evolving, offering a wide range of applications and sophistication. Accessible to everyone, including teachers, technology raises the question of its acceptance in learning. The goal of this study was to investigate the acceptance of technology in English learning, specifically focusing on the use of Schoology as a platform. Furthermore, it aimed to identify the challenges encountered when integrating it into English learning. The study involved twenty teachers who used Schoology as a supporting medium in the learning process and was conducted through polls and questionnaires. Through this study, the authors aimed to enhance English learning by exploring how technology, specifically Schoology, could be integrated into it. The results provided valuable insights into the acceptance of Schoology among teachers and the challenges faced when integrating it into English learning.

Abstract

The significance of literature in language learning has grown considerably. This is particularly true in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), where it is recognized as a valuable tool for enhancing English skills. Nonetheless, the focus on teaching English literature for its intrinsic value rather than solely as a means for language acquisition is limited, especially in Indonesia. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the teaching of English literature to EFL students in Indonesian high schools. Specifically, the study aims to investigate the criteria employed by English literature teachers in selecting literary works, identify challenges faced by teachers when instructing EFL students in English literature, and examine the strategies they employ to overcome these challenges. The research entails a case study involving a teacher instructing two distinct English lessons at a senior high school in Indonesia. The findings reveal the following: Firstly, the primary considerations for selecting literary texts include factors such as length, language complexity, canonical status, and the author's cultural background. Secondly, challenges encountered encompass reading habits, English proficiency, and the availability of resources. Consequently, this research underscores the potential for further exploration within the realm of teaching English literature to EFL students in Indonesia, with the pursuit of effective instructional models being a noteworthy avenue for future investigation.

Abstract

Google docs is widely researched for its effect on students’ writing accuracy, however, previous studies have not discussed its effects on student teachers’ achievement and the engagement in hybrid collaborative writing class. The purpose of this study is to fill the gaps. Fifty English study program student teachers at a university in Indonesia are the subjects. Twenty-five student teachers from the experimental group did collaborative writing activity by using google docs in their process of writing whereas the rest as the control group did individual writing although for idea development, they worked together by using WhatsApp. Data collection was from pretests, posttests and from questionnaires. The study reveals that hybrid collaborative writing enhances student teachers’ engagement and has a great effect on students’ teacher writing achievement in hybrid learning class.
