Abstract

This research article aims to explore the traces of religious transformation in the urban society during the Kutaringin Kingdom era. The current population of Kutaringin, now located within the West Kotawaringin Regency, is predominantly Muslim. The Islamic influence is palpable in both the daily lives of the people and the Islamic symbols present during the current governance. This study adopts an empirical (field research), utilizing both historical and religious approach. The findings indicate that the process of religious transformation occurred peacefully without any acts of violence. Some individuals who were previously adherents of Kaharingan converted to Islam and integrated into the urban society of the Kutaringin Kingdom. Meanwhile, those who remained steadfast in their beliefs chose to reside in the hinterlands. However, their relationship with the kingdom remained strong, and the kingdom sought their opinions and approval, represented by the leaders of their communities, in addressing issues. The role of religious leaders, especially Kyai Gede, played a significant part in this transformation. Kyai Gede, whose passing is commemorated annually, played a crucial role in shaping the religious landscape. Presently, the kingdom's territory is divided into several regencies, including West Kotawaringin regency, Lamandau regency, and Sukamara regency, with the majority of the population adhering to Islam.

Abstract

The involvement of women in the public sphere in Saudi Arabia has increased after Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman officially declared the vision of Saudi Arabia 2030. In contrast to Saudi Arabia's Wahhabi clerics who tend to domesticate the role of women, the government in its vision actually encourages women to be involved in the public sphere. This paper seeks to describe the discourse on women's empowerment and reveal the ideology that underlies it and to explain the implications of the construction of this discourse on changes in public policy in Saudi Arabia. The author use critical discourse analysis as an analytical tool. The author concludes, First, the discourse on women's empowerment in the Saudi 2030 vision document is manifested in giving equal roles to women and men to be involved in social and economic activities. Women in Saudi's 2030 vision are positioned as national assets that are open, competitive, hardworking, and able to drive the economy. Second, the discourse that encourages women to be involved in public activities is inseparable from the ideology of the current Saudi Arabian government which tends to lead to socio-economic liberalization. In this context, women's empowerment is used for the benefit of economic growth and the transformation of new, more open religious social conditions (infitah). Third, the discourse on women's empowerment in the Saudi 2030 vision influences changes in public policy in Saudi Arabia. The old policies from the rulings of the ulama were replaced with new policies that gave women more freedom to participate in the public sphere.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze Abdurrauf Singkel's concept of Insan Kamil to address the problems of sexual consent, childfree, and nature and nurture which frequently arise in urban society. These issues are a common phenomenon in contemporary urban society due to their materialistic lifestyle and the pursuit of worldly goals by denying their true nature (fitrah). Sufism's concept of "Insan Kamil" depicts the ideal human being from every perspective—that is, the ideal human being as he is by nature. This concept of the perfect human will serve as an antidote to the three problems above, each of which is a deviation from the essence of human nature. This paper is a qualitative library research that analyzes data using an analytical descriptive method. This study concludes that, first and foremost all of these issues stem from the same root cause which is a denial of human nature. As a concept of the perfect human, Insan Kamil is a manifestation of achieving the pinnacle of humanity based on true human nature. Insan Kamil is also a condition of servitude to the highest degree or ihsan. Therefore, this concept is relevant to overcoming the root problems of sexual consent, childfree, and nature and nurture which stem from the denial of one's nature. By becoming Insan Kamil, someone can place himself according to his nature in the right and proper place.
