Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Building façades significantly influence building thermal performance and contribute to urban heat mitigation, particularly in hot-humid climates. While field testing, laboratory experiments, numerical modeling, and digital simulations are widely applied in façade research, methodological frameworks for integrating these into hybrid approaches remain limited. This study systematically reviews 32 peer-reviewed articles to analyze the types, sequencing, and disciplinary tendencies in applying hybrid experimental approaches for façade thermal performance research. Seven type of hybrid experimental approach were identified, with combination of field experiments-simulations are most common. Stage sequencing varied by research objectives, while disciplinary background influenced whether studies began with modelling or empirical experimentation. The proposed hybrid experimental research framework offers strategic guidance for approach selection and sequencing, supporting resource efficiency and methodological rigor in sustainable building design.

Abstract

This study aims to identify strategies and innovations in the development of earthquake-resistant housing in Indonesia during the 2015–2025 period through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). A total of 20 articles were rigorously selected from 233 initial publications in Google Scholar, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria relevant to the local context in Indonesia. The findings reveal three main approaches: (1) modular prefabricated construction systems such as RISHA, RIKO, and RISBA; (2) improvement of conventional construction in accordance with the latest Indonesian National Standards (SNI); and (3) adaptation of vernacular architecture based on local wisdom. The study also examines the performance of materials such as bamboo, timber, steel profiles, light-gauge steel, and composite materials in enhancing earthquake resilience. Architectural studies in Indonesia generally focus on identifying features and concepts of vernacular architecture that are responsive to seismic conditions; however, they have not yet advanced toward the modernization and generalization of these principles for application in earthquake-resistant housing design. Although various technical and social innovations have emerged, implementation in the field remains constrained by weak technical supervision, disparities in construction and material quality, and low disaster literacy among communities. Therefore, this study recommends strengthening technical regulations, enhancing community capacity, and integrating technology with local values as key strategies toward developing earthquake-resistant housing that is contextual, adaptive, and sustainable in Indonesia.

Abstract

Small-Scale Industrial Settlements or Perkampungan Industri Kecil (PIK) are areas that have developed through the integration of residential and home-based industrial functions, giving rise to a need for adaptive and flexible spaces. The lack of responsive spatial planning in this context often leads to problems such as overcrowding, a decline in environmental quality, and conflicts of function between living and working areas. This study identifies patterns of spatial adaptation in accommodating home-based industrial activities, analyses factors influencing spatial flexibility, evaluates the impact of spatial transformation on residents’ well-being, and formulates flexibility-based design strategies. The research methodology employs a mixed-methods approach (qualitative and quantitative), utilizing field observation, interviews, and spatial analysis. The findings indicate that the separation of spatial functions (vertical, horizontal, or integrated) is influenced by the type of business, land area, and socio-economic conditions. Flexible housing designs have been shown to enhance production efficiency and living comfort. This study contributes by providing a flexible housing design model and recommendations for adaptive spatial planning policies for the PIK area.

Abstract

In the Catholic Church tradition, the worship space serves as a critical architectural framework for liturgical activities and for spatial articulations of symbolic meaning that structure ritual experience. Previous studies have predominantly addressed permanent church buildings, while investigations into temporary worship spaces remain limited, particularly in terms of their spatial adaptability and symbolic performance. This study aims to examine how the Pastoral Service Building, adapted as a temporary worship space at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Karanganyar, spatially represents liturgical symbolic meaning and constructs a sense of sacredness through architectural configuration. The research adopts a qualitative case study approach, employing direct observation of spatial geometry, circulation patterns, visual orientation, and lighting conditions during liturgical celebrations, complemented by in-depth interviews with the pastor, church administrators, and congregants. A semiotic framework is used to analyze and interpret spatial signs and architectural elements within the liturgical context. The findings show that despite physical constraints and the absence of permanent sacred elements, strategic spatial arrangement, such as geometry, circulation, congregation–altar orientation, sanctuary configuration, and lighting, preserves the symbolic structure of Catholic liturgy and supports a coherent ritual experience. The study offers insights into adaptive design strategies for temporary worship spaces, particularly in addressing spatial constraints while preserving symbolic and ritual functions.

Abstract

Although culture is widely recognized as shaping the built environment, scholarship often remains descriptive and methodologically unclear about how cultural determinants become spatially manifest and ideologically consequential. Addressing this gap, especially with respect to vernacular settings, this study proposes an integrated framework that couples dismantling culture with the system of settings construct to operationalize culture for spatial reading. Using a conceptual-analytic method (critical literature reading and theoretical synthesis), culture is decomposed into values, norms, lifestyles, and activity systems and aligned with system of settings analysis, which treats environments as ordered relations among space, time, activity, and communication. The framework shows that (1) culture becomes spatially legible through staged translation via activity systems; (2) the system of settings mediates cultural registration across fixed, semi-fixed, and non-fixed features; (3) typologies (vernacular, spontaneous, traditional, modern-formal) differ by cultural embeddedness; and (4) translation is hermeneutic, delimiting possibilities rather than prescribing form. These results provide an interpretive grammar for culturally responsive design and post-occupancy evaluation and motivate subsequent empirical testing through comparative field studies.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify and analyze the preservation strategies of the Jakarta Cathedral Church area as a cultural heritage site in adapting to a tropical climate, using a cultural ecology approach. a neo-Gothic architectural landmark that is over a century old and faces preservation challenges due to tropical climatic conditions as well as increasing urban pressures. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing field observations, semi-structured interviews with site managers and restoration practitioners, documentation, and literature review. The findings indicate that the applied preservation strategies have integrated the principles of cultural ecology with the regulatory framework of Law No. 11 of 2010 through spatial organization, material selection, construction techniques, and zoning systems. However, implementation is still limited, especially in addressing tropical climate conditions, as reflected in the imbalance between material authenticity, construction methods, and environmental performance. The findings demonstrate that cultural heritage preservation should be understood as an adaptive and integrated system encompassing physical, cultural, and environmental dimensions, rather than just technical interventions. The study strengthens the role of the cultural ecology as an analytical framework in architectural conservation studies, particularly within the context of historical sites in tropical regions facing simultaneous environmental pressures and urban development.
