Abstract

The mathematics literacy abilities are strongly needed for the students to be able to face educational challenges from the cognitive aspects. The students' mathematics literacy abilities can be viewed from various dimensions, one of whixzch is the learning styles. The purpose of this research is to analyze the students' mathematics literacy abilities in inferential statistics subject based on the learning styles. This is a qualitative descriptive research. The subjects of this research are the fourth semester students at a higher education institution in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia, who are currently taking inferential statistics course. The instruments used in this research are test and interview instruments. The data analysis is carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The students’ mathematics literacy abilities with divergent learning styles are only able to arrive at the formulating step. The students’ mathematics literacy abilities with convergent learning styles are able to take the mathematical literacy processes. The students' mathematics literacy abilities in the assimilation learning style have come to the interpreting step, but they have not been able yet to solve the problems well. The students' mathematics literacy abilities in the accommodation learning style have been able to understand and check (formulating and interpreting) well but in preparing plans or arguing (employing stage) in solving the problems, it has not been achieved yet properly. Based on the research results, it is found that each different learning style has its own different mathematics literacy abilities

Abstract

In the world of education there are still many students who have difficulty learning mathematics. Difficulty learning mathematics is a condition, a person is not able to learn mathematics well. The difficulty in learning mathematics is related in mentioning things that are known and asked for, calculating (counting), and application of formulas. Based on these circumstances, the researcher conducted a study that aims to analyze the difficulties of learning mathematics in using the principles of determinant and inverse matrix material. This learning difficulty was analyzed based on indicators of learning difficulties in mathematics using the principles of (1) calculation errors or algebraic operations, (2) unable to determine relevant data, and (3) unable to apply formulas. This type of research is descriptive qualitative, with the research instruments are tests and interviews. The descriptions of the results of the analysis of the difficulty of learning mathematics in using the principles are: (1) the calculation error indicator is still at a high level criterion, so that the students' numeracy skills still need to be improved, especially in terms of accuracy, accuracy, and caution; (2) the inability to determine relevant data is at the medium level criteria, but this ability can still be improved again by getting used to writing things that are known and asked for to make it easier to solve mathematical problems; and (3) the indicators of not being able to apply the formula are at low level criteria, which are dominated by low-ability students. This difficulty can be minimized by direct mentoring by the teacher and or through peer tutors.

Abstract

This research was motivated by teachers who must continue to help their students to enhancestudent's critical thinking skills even in COVID-19 pandemic situation. Online Inquiry and Problem Based Learning (PBL) with Zoom Cloud Meeting platform was used because based on previous research, Inquiry learning and PBL can improve student's critical thinking skills. The purpose of this study was to see the differences of junior high school student's critical thinking skills after being taught by online Inquiry learning and PBL in terms of student's initial abilities and to see the interaction between Inquiry, PBL, and initial ability with student's critical thinking. This research was used quasi experimental nonequivalent control group design, conducted in 8th grade of Junior High School 7 Jambi City using 3 classes; 2 experimental classes and 1 control class selected by the simple random sampling method. The results of this study were tested with one way and two way ANOVA, showing that there were differences of student's critical thinking abilities with high, medium and low initial abilities after being taught by online Inquiry learning and PBL learning, but there was no interaction between online Inquiry learning and PBL, and student's initial ability with student's critical thinking.

Abstract

Nowadays, students' expected comprehensions are not only capable in memorizing formal concepts, but also capable in constructing their knowledge in solving contextual problems. The presence of the STEM approach, which is the integration of four knowledge including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, considered as one of the appropriate innovations for students in establishing their own knowledge. However, there are several problems that occur in implementing STEM approach in learning, including the preparation for STEM learning. Hence, this study aims to investigate the readiness of teachers in Indonesia to implement STEM learning, in terms of their knowledge about STEM and experience in arranging STEM-based modules. This research was conducted online using a questionnaire which was distributed through google form. Several teachers were also interviewed to get confirmation of their answers on the google form. The subjects in this study consisted of 54 Mathematics and Science teachers in junior high school. After the data was obtained, the data were analyzed qualitatively. Based on this research, it is known that most of the teachers who participated in this study did not have adequate knowledge regarding STEM, so that teachers were struggling in developing STEM-based modules.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the students' mathematical problem-solving characteristics based on cognitive style that is field independent, field dependent, reflective, and impulsive. Fourty-five students of VIII grade at PGRI 5 Junior High School were involved. The students were given 4 descriptive math problems. The result showed that the characteristics of independent field cognitive style showed that could understand the problems, determined the right problem planning, careless in solving, and did not re-check the answer. The subject could solve questions faster than the specified time, but the answer was wrong. For the characteristics of field dependent cognitive style, they could understand the problems, determined the right problem planning, careless in solving, and did not re-check the answer. The subject could not solve questions on time, but the answers tended to be correct. For the characteristics of reflective cognitive style, they did not understand the problems, determined the right problem planning, quite careless in solving, and did not re-check the answer. The subject could solve questions faster than the specified time, but the answer was wrong. For the characteristics of impulsive cognitive style, they did not understand the problems, determined the right problem planning, quite careless in solving, and did not re-check the answer. The subject could solve questions on time, but the answers tended to be wrong.

Abstract

The learning process cannot be separated from the use of learning tools, the entire learning process has been planned in these learning tools. This study aims to produce a contextual-based mathematics learning tool on the subject of comparison of class VII SMPN 27 Makassar which is valid, practical and effective. The type of research used is research and development (R&D) with reference to the 4-D Thiagarajan model, namely: (1) the define stage, (2) the design stage, (3) the develop stage, and (4) the disseminate stage. The instruments used were validation sheets, student response questionnaires, observation sheets for device implementation, and learning outcomes tests. Based on the results of the validation of the experts, the products developed and the instruments used for each aspect were in the "valid" to "very valid" category on average. In the field trial, it was found that: (1) the instrument used to measure the practicality found that the device developed was carried out well, the average value of all aspects of the observation was carried out and the response questionnaire analysis was in the "positive" category (2) the instrument for measuring the effectiveness The data obtained from the test of learning outcomes with an average score of students reaching 83.3%, student activity was as expected, and observations of learning management were in the high category. So that this study produces a contextual-based mathematics learning tool product on the subject of comparison of class VII SMPN 27 Makassar which is valid, practical and effective.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to describe the thinking process of junior high school students in solving mathematical problems in terms of personality types sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic. The thinking process used is based on Piaget's theory which consists of assimilation and accommodation processes. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach and was conducted in one of the state junior high schools in Pangkalpinang. The subjects in this study consisted of 4 students of class VII. Subject selection using the purposive technique. The instruments used were researchers, personality type questionnaires, math problem-solving test questions, and interview guidelines. The validity of the data is done by technical triangulation. Data analysis in this study used the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that sanguine and phlegmatic subjects carried out assimilation thinking processes at all stages of Polya's problem solving for all types of questions. Choleric subjects and melancholic subjects carried out assimilation thinking processes at all stages of Polya for world problem type questions with abstract context.
