Abstract

This study examines Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House through feminist frameworks, focusing on Nora’s navigation of 19th-century Norway’s public and private spheres. Using Simone de Beauvoir’s concept of “the Other” and Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, the analysis reveals how patriarchal norms shaped Nora’s subjugation and ultimate rebellion. The study highlights the play’s enduring relevance in advocating for gender equality and contributes to feminist literary criticism by exploring the intersection of gender, power, and societal norms. While previous studies have extensively analyzed Nora's character, this study explores how the play's portrayal of the duality of public and private spaces shapes Nora's rebellion against societal expectations. Furthermore, this study explores how Ibsen's work continues to resonate with contemporary audiences, highlighting the enduring relevance of his critique of gender inequality and the need for women's empowerment. By examining the enduring power of A Doll's House, the article argues that Ibsen's play continues to serve as a vital tool for understanding and challenging the structures that perpetuate gender inequality in the modern world.

Abstract

his research aims to analyze Damsel (2024), a movie related to gender role and power dynamic that analyzed through the lens of feminist stylistics. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach and conducted into three levels: word level, phrase/sentence level, and discourse level, following the frame of feminist stylistics introduced by Sara Mills (1995). At the word level, strong and assertive language is used by female characters, particularly Elodie and the stepmother, to resist patriarchal oppression. At the sentence level, active sentence structures position Elodie as the driving force of the narrative rather than a passive victim. At the discourse level, the film challenges the trope of the helpless princess and instead presents a protagonist who fights for justice and subverts traditional power dynamics. In conclusion, the feminist stylistic analysis of Damsel (2024) movie reveals that the film actively dismantles gender role and power dynamic by using language and character interactions.

Abstract

Based on Michael Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, this study examines the meaning of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre from the standpoint of ideational meta-function. The way that ideas and experiences are expressed in language, particularly through the contexts, participants, and processes in the text, is reflected in the ideational meta-function. To explain the character dynamics and the novel's primary themes—such as freedom, gender equality, morality, and emotional conflict, this research points out the utilization of material, mental, and relational processes in the main dialogues. The analysis's findings demonstrate that, particularly in discourses that emphasize women's social constraints, relational mechanisms tend to be applied to character identity and social positions. The introspection of the main character, such as Jane's contemplation of her autonomy and self-worth, is exhibited through mental processes. Material processes, on the other hand, show the characters' tangible responses to different difficulties. Furthermore, the novel's ideological meaning is reinforced by the circumstances, including comparison and periodicity.

Abstract

This study explores Indonesian English teachers' perspectives on English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and its importance in workplace communication. Using grounded theory and narrative inquiry, the research investigates the experiences of four vocational English teachers to identify challenges, strategies, and suggestions for curriculum reform. The findings revealed that teachers frequently face psychological and linguistic obstacles, such as limited vocabulary and cultural differences, which hindered effective ELF communication. To address these issues, teachers employed pragmatic strategies and cultural adaptation techniques to facilitate workplace interactions. The study highlights the need to shift from traditional grammar-focused instruction toward ELF-informed methodologies that emphasize comprehensibility, intercultural competence, and practical communication skills. This approach aims to better prepare vocational Indonesian students for the complexities of global workplace environments. Overall, the research suggests for an inclusive and flexible English education system that strengthen intercultural understanding and communicative proficiency, essential for successful international collaboration and cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

In the rapidly evolving digital era, online advertising has emerged as a central strategy in marketing communication. While language plays a crucial role in crafting persuasive advertisements, few studies have provided a thematic synthesis of the linguistic strategies used in online ads. This study aims to identify and synthesize persuasive linguistic strategies as discussed in recent academic literature. The research employs thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework. Data were collected from ten peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2020 and 2025, each focusing on persuasive language in digital advertising. The analysis revealed four dominant themes: Emotional Resonance, Building Credibility, Interactive Appeal, and Aesthetic Persuasion. These findings demonstrate that language in online advertising is not only used to convey product information but also to establish emotional connections, build trust, stimulate audience engagement, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the message. The study offers practical implications for advertisers, encouraging a focus on emotional and interactive elements in message construction. It also calls for further research into the effectiveness of these strategies across different digital platforms and cultural contexts.

Abstract Readers play an essential role in interpreting literary works, as each individual constructs meaning through personal experience and sociocultural background. Suzume no Tojimari, a Japanese novel by Makoto Shinkai, explores themes of loss, trauma, and post-disaster hope, which have elicited diverse responses from readers on the digital platform bookmeter.com. This study aims to analyze how readers perceive the novel’s central themes, especially natural disasters, reflections on life, hope, the future, and interpersonal relationships, by employing a descriptive qualitative method and Hans Robert Jauss's reception theory. The findings reveal that readers engage not only with the plot but also relate it to their own life experiences, turning the novel into a dynamic dialogical space between text and reader. This study also highlights the significance of the reception approach in understanding readers’ emotional engagement with contemporary literary works.
