Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to assess the overall pattern of ASEAN tourist visits to Indonesia and investigate the potential driving tourism demand between 2017 to 2022. The study focuses on variables believed to influence ASEAN travelers’ interest in Indonesia, such as per capita income, relative pricing, substitution prices, currency exchange rates, and population size. Method: This study employs panel data covering 9 ASEAN countries—excluding Indonesia and Timor Leste—namely Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Laos, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar, as the cross-sectional units over the period from 2017 to 2022. The analysis is based on secondary data sourced from BPS, UNCTAD, and the World Bank. The dependent variable is the number of tourists from ASEAN countries. Panel data regression is utilized to identify the factors influencing the demand for tourism in Indonesia by ASEAN visitors during the 2017–2022 Result: The result of the study indicate that the population and per capita income of ASEAN nations have a significant positive impact on ASEAN travelers' demand for travel to Indonesia. In contrast, the fluctuating cost of substituting Indonesian travel with travel to Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand has a significantly negative impact on the demand for Indonesian tourism. The relative price variable and the Rupiah exchange rate do not significantly impact the demand for Indonesian tourism by ASEAN travelers. Contribution: The main contribution of this research is a recommended government policy aimed at maintaining price stability in Indonesia to enhance its competitiveness within the ASEAN region. Additionally, efforts should be made to promote domestic tourism through social media campaigns and to enhance the quality and service standards of the tourism sector to boost Indonesia’s appeal. Ensuring currency stability involves implementing a combination of economic and monetary policies, such as balancing currency supply and demand, maintaining macroeconomic stability, managing inflation, and fostering both domestic and foreign investment.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to critically examine how marathon events generate economic multiplier effects, identify the structural factors that limit these mechanisms in Indonesia, and propose strategic directions to strengthen marathon-based sport tourism. Method: This research employs a critical literature review using peer-reviewed sources from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate. The review synthesizes 29 key references on sport tourism, economic impact, sustainability, governance, and destination branding. Thematic synthesis is used to analyse how multiplier effects operate and why they often underperform in the Indonesian context. Result: The findings reveal three major themes. First, marathon events theoretically generate economic benefits through direct spending, supply-chain activation, induced income circulation, and long-term destination branding. Second, these mechanisms are constrained in Indonesia by leakage to non-local firms, weak MSME integration, short visitor stays, displacement effects, governance fragmentation, and limited community acceptance. Third, the study highlights strategic pathways including evidence-based evaluation, stronger local procurement, improved multi-stakeholder governance, enhanced participant experience, and community-driven branding to maximize economic outcomes. Contribution: This study advances knowledge by integrating economic, governance, sustainability, and branding perspectives to explain why Indonesian marathon events yield modest multiplier effects. The review provides policymakers and event organizers with practical frameworks to improve event planning, strengthen local economic linkages, and support sustainable tourism development. It fills a gap in the literature by offering a structured, context-specific analysis of marathon events in an emerging tourism economy.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine the preferences of Generation Z in selecting coffee shops in Penelokan, Kintamani, a popular tourism village in Bangli Regency, Bali, known for its scenic views of Lake and Mount Batur. Understanding these preferences is essential for coffee shop owners operating in this highly competitive and rapidly growing area. Method: The research employs a descriptive quantitative approach supported by qualitative data. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. A total of 50 Generation Z respondents were selected using Hair’s sampling rule. The data were analyzed using mean scores for each attribute and subsequently classified into preference categories based on predetermined intervals. Result: The findings reveal that Generation Z considers atmosphere (mean = 4.54), product quality (mean = 4.41), and service (mean = 4.24) as very important factors in choosing a coffee shop. In contrast, price (mean = 4.20) and facilities (mean = 4.12) are assessed as important factors. Overall, the results indicate that experiential and aesthetic aspects, supported by good product quality and service, are central to Generation Z’s coffee shop preferences in Penelokan. Contribution: This study contributes to the literature on consumer behavior and coffee shop management in tourism destinations by providing empirical evidence on Generation Z’s preference structure. Practically, the findings offer guidance for coffee shop owners and managers in Penelokan, Kintamani to prioritize atmosphere, product quality, and service quality in their value propositions, while strategically managing pricing and facilities to better align with the expectations of Generation Z consumers.

Abstract

Purpose: This research aims to analyze percepcion, compliance and satisfaction regarding the implementation of the Diving Codes of Conduct at three popular dive sites; Friwen Wall, Lau-Lau and Sauwandarek, located within the Marine Protected Area of Dampier Strait, Raja Ampat. The research highlights the interrelationship among these three variables in supporting conservation-based marine tourism management. Methods: A descriptive qualitative approach supported by simple quantitative data was employed. Thirty tourist divers were purposively selected from the three dive sites. Data were collected using a closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaire developed based on the official Diving Codes of Conduct of Raja Ampat Regency. The analysis was conducted descriptively by calculating the percentage distribution of categories for each research variable. Results: Tourist perceptions of the implementation of the codes of conduct showed consistently high positive values (80–90%). Compliance levels were also high (80–90%), particularly in buoyancy control, maintaining distance from coral structures, and adherence to prohibitions on touching marine organisms. Tourist satisfaction reached 90% across all locations, indicating that the application of the codes of conduct does not diminish recreational quality but instead enhances safety, comfort, and the ecological quality of the diving environment. Contribution: This study provides empirical evidence on the interconnectedness of tourist perceptions, compliance, and satisfaction within tropical marine protected areas. The findings reinforce the literature on responsible diving tourism and offer practical insights for strengthening diver education strategies, standardizing operator briefings, and developing sustainable marine tourism policies in Raja Ampat.
