Abstract

The recovery of land cover/use after the disaster is sometimes disorderly, especially in developing countries. It is necessary to continuously monitor the progress of land cover/use recovery after disaster in order to sustain vegetation around estuarine and coastal areas. The purpose of this study was to assess the recovery progress of vegetation around estuarine and coastal areas after the Indian Ocean tsunami using a simplified method which consisting Google Earth and visual photo interpretation. Vegetation areas were able to be detected with high accuracy (80%−100%) using simplified method which consisting Google Earth and visual photo interpretation. We were able to show that all most of area including mangrove forests recovered relatively smoothly. However, the area which has a large vegetation areas have not enough recovered, which reached to half or less than half compare with before tsunami. This may be significant in affecting the role of the coastal ecosystem and bioshield. A large number of small mangrove patches (less than 0.1 ha) were able to found around ponds, a number that rapidly increased after the tsunami. Some site in 2013 was double that in 2004. Fish farmers might have planted them for supplying nutrients to ponds and maintain the water quality. Dozen years have passed since the 2004 tsunami, and it might be time to more focus on the recovery of large vegetation area.

Abstract

Cijulang River is one of the leading ecotourism objects in Pangandaran, West Java Province, Indonesia. However, the river has a variety of activities that can increase the water pollution in the river such as Green Canyon cliffs tourism, ecotourism of mangrove conservation, housing, and industrial siting. Macrobenthos is one of the bio-indicators that can assess the rate of water pollution in rivers, especially their organic pollutants. Therefore, this research aims to determine water pollution status in Cijulang River Tourism by comparing various biotic indices. The study was conducted at four site sampling locations from upstream to downstream in the rainy season period and dry season period using different methods namely, line transect model, water quality assessment by biological indexing (diversity, species dominant, and family biotic), species deficit, and organic measurement. The research showed 5873 macrobenthos and divided into 27 species with an average abundance of 167 ind.m-2 and are mainly dominated by gastropod species Faunus ater (40%). They are extreme species that can live in high organic pollution and water salinity. This divided the research of quality water assessment of Cijulang River into three categories as follows: slightly polluted (score 36-46) at Green Canyon site, moderately polluted (score 50-60) at Boat Shelter and Muara Cijulang location, and highly polluted (score 66) at Nusawiru site.Keywords:RiverBio-indicatorOrganicAquatic pollution

Abstract

The rapid development of fish farming using the Floating Net Cage (KJA) system has raised concerns about the water quality of the reservoir. This study aims to evaluate the water quality in KJA and non-KJA areas of the Jatigede Reservoir based on the physical-chemical parameters of the water. Analysis was conducted at four stations with varying levels of KJA activity. The results showed that, based on Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021, the pH and BOD parameters have exceeded the established quality standards. However, Jatigede Reservoir is still considered suitable for fisheries activities as other water quality parameters remain within the standards for Class II and III water. This study is expected to serve as a basis for the sustainable management of Jatigede Reservoir, aiming to mitigate the negative impacts of KJA on water quality while supporting its utilization as an economic livelihood resource for the local community.

Abstract

Sea turtle populations have declined due to habitat destruction and the widespread collection of eggs for commercial purposes. This study assessed the characteristics and suitability of semi-natural hatchery habitats for Olive Ridley Sea Turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) at Batu Hiu Beach, Pangandaran, West Java, Indonesia, from June 1-July 31, 2023. The survey method and purposive sampling were employed to determine nesting sites based on turtle landing points.Biophysical habitat measurements were analyzed descriptively and statistically using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test to compare sand temperature, sand humidity, and air humidity. An L. olivacea landed at site 4, laying 73 eggs in a natural nest with 34 cm nest depth and 24 cm nest diameter. Semi-natural nests measured 37 cm nest depth and 26 cm in nest diameter. The sand type at Batu Hiu Beach was characterized by black sand grains and fine sand substrate with a percentage of 51.02%. The temperature within the hatchery ranged from 25.3°C to 42.1°C.  with average of 29.7 ± 1.88 °C.The sand humidity in the hatchery ranged from 2% to 14%, with an average daily humidity of 10 ± 0.22 %. The air humidity within the hatchery ranged from 56% to 94%, with a daily average of 85 ± 0.05 %. Based on all the analyzed parameters, the hatchery at Batu Hiu Sea Turtle Preservation were suitable with the nest criteria by Technical Guidelines for Sea Turtle Conservation Management by DKP for the hatching of L. olivacea eggs, with a hatching success rate of 85%.Keywords: Lepidochelys olivacea, temperature, humidity, sand type, hatching success
