Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: Community based tourism development requires the active participation of local communities as tourism entrepreneurs. However, in many natural tourist destinations, the entrepreneurial readiness of local communities is still limited. This study aims to analyze entrepreneurial challenges and capacity building needs and examine their impact on entrepreneurial readiness among prospective tourism entrepreneurs in the Sumber Maron tourist area, Pagelaran District, Malang Regency. Method: This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey of 85–100 prospective local tourism entrepreneurs. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire using a Likert scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression. Result: The results show that entrepreneurial challenges have a negative effect on entrepreneurial readiness, while capacity building needs have a positive and significant effect. These results highlight the importance of designing evidence-based and contextual entrepreneurship development programs to enhance sustainable local tourism development. Contribution: A contextually designed entrepreneurship development program is expected to comprehensively enhance the capacity of prospective tourism entrepreneurs, from business planning and operational management to marketing and tourism product innovation. With the right and sustainable approach, strengthening entrepreneurial readiness will not only encourage the growth of local tourism businesses but also contribute to the development of Sumber Maron as an inclusive and sustainable tourism destination

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates the decline in tourist arrivals at Governor’s Rapid in Quirino Province, Philippines, and evaluates the strategies employed by local stakeholders to promote and manage the site, with the goal of identifying pathways for sustainable ecotourism development. Method: A basic qualitative research design was employed. Data were collected through semi- structured interviews with tourism officers, community members, and visitors, selected via purposive sampling. Thematic analysis was used to identify recurring patterns and themes. Result: The study identified multiple interrelated factors contributing to the decline, including limited infrastructure, weak promotional efforts, environmental degradation, and poor coordination among agencies. Existing initiatives, such as community involvement and occasional tourism campaigns, were found to be fragmented and reactive. The COVID-19 pandemic further disrupted travel behaviors, exacerbating the decline. Contribution: Findings underscore the urgent need for innovative, inclusive, and locally driven tourism management strategies. Recommendations include enhancing destination branding, improving infrastructure and accessibility, fostering stronger stakeholder collaboration, and adopting a resilience-based tourism framework. The study contributes to the broader discourse on rural tourism recovery and offers practical guidance for local policy-making and sustainable tourism development in post-pandemic contexts.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to develop an integrative conceptual framework linking Sharia objectives (maqasid al-sharia) with sustainable halal tourism in Southeast Asia through research landscape mapping, identification of key findings, and a comprehensive literature synthesis. Method: This study employs a mixed-methods approach integrating bibliometric analysis with a systematic literature review based on the PRISMA 2020 protocol. A total of 62 Scopus-indexed articles from 2019 to 2025 were analyzed using VOSviewer software to identify major thematic clusters. Result: The bibliometric analysis revealed five main thematic clusters: halal tourism and Islamic marketing; tourist satisfaction and loyalty; sustainable tourism; Muslim tourists and destination development; and religiosity and local wisdom. The findings indicate that maqasid al-sharia serves as an integrative axis capable of bridging fragmentation among these clusters. The dynamics of implementing sustainable halal tourism in Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and Indonesia reveal diverse approaches grounded in maqasid al-sharia principles. Contribution: This study demonstrates that maqasid al-sharia can serve as a normative foundation for developing halal tourism that is ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable. The resulting integrative conceptual framework offers practical implications for policymakers, destination managers, and industry stakeholders in building a tourism ecosystem that is not only Sharia-compliant but also resilient, while contributing new theoretical knowledge by bridging the gap between Sharia principles and the global sustainability agenda.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the role of participation in the development of MICE tourism in Lombok, identify the factors affecting its effectiveness, and formulate development strategies. Method: This study employed a qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and literature review, using descriptive analysis based on participation theory, stakeholder theory, and destination competitiveness theory. Result: The findings indicate that participation has involved various stakeholders; however, it has not been optimal and remains dominated by the government and private sector. Community participation tends to be in the form of tokenism and induced participation. The main barriers include power imbalances, limited access to information, low community capacity, weak coordination, and a top-down approach. Development strategies need to be implemented in an integrated manner through strengthening collaboration, inclusive participation, infrastructure improvement, and the utilization of technology to enhance destination competitiveness and sustainability. Contribution: This study contributes theoretically by strengthening the discourse on stakeholder participation in MICE tourism development, and practically by providing recommendations for collaborative, inclusive, and sustainable strategies to enhance the competitiveness of Lombok as a destination.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examined the Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills gap among event professionals in Indonesia and aimed to develop a contextual training framework to address this issue. Method: A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with event professionals in Bali and Jakarta. Result: The findings indicated that although AI was widely perceived as useful for improving efficiency, significant skill gaps remained at both operational levels (e.g., prompt engineering and content creation) and strategic levels (e.g., data analytics and AI integration). These gaps were primarily influenced by limited time, high workload, and resistance to technological change. Furthermore, existing training programs were often too generic and lacked practical relevance. Contribution: This study contributes theoretically to the AI skills gap literature and practically offers a structured, context-specific training framework that is flexible and application-oriented, incorporating micro-learning formats, case-based learning, and industry practitioner involvement to enhance workforce readiness in the event industry.
