Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the students’ level of anxiety in speaking, the causes of students’ anxiety and the effect of students’ anxiety to speak in speaking class, and the students’ strategies to cope their anxiety in Islamic Economy department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. The results of this research show that the students of Islamic Economy department of UIN Alauddin Makassar were at middle anxious. Moreover, the causes of anxiety for the students with high level anxiety are lack of practice, lack of confidence to speak, unable to speak in front of public, and fear of negative evaluation of peers. Whereas, the students with low level anxiety experience anxiety during speaking class because of competitiveness. The students with high level anxiety have debilitating anxiety with negative effects while the students with low level anxiety have facilitating anxiety. Nevertheless, the students had their own strategies to deal with their anxiety, for example, keeping silent, avoiding eye contact, and smiling or laughing. In addition, the students with low level of anxiety reduce anxiety by practice and preparation. Besides, to reduce anxiety during speaking class, the lecturers gave them motivation to speak English or told the story or jokes.

Abstract

Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif dalam penelitian. Peneliti membagikan link kepada siswa yang berisi kuesioner tentang persepsi siswa dalam strategi belajar kemudian siswa mengisi kuesioner melalui google form. Dari hasil tanggapan siswa maka hasilnya pun sudah otomatis masuk di goole form. Setelah itu peneliti menganalisis hasil tanggapan dari siswa. Subjek dari penelitian ini yaitu sepuluh siswa di kelas tiga jurusan keperawatan di SMK N 3 Tikep. Hasil analisis menunjukan bahwa hanya 30% siswa saja yang memiliki strategi belajarnya sendiri, namun meskipun begitu mereka aktif dalam pembelajaran di kelas karna 70% dari mereka menjawab selalu. Berdasarkan hasil tanggapan dari siswa, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa strategi belajar siswa adalah strategi pembelajaran metakognitif karena siswa mencoba untuk mendapatkan hasil belajar yang baik, strategi pembelajaran meta-kognitif digunakan untuk mengawasi atau belajar bahasa langsung yang melibatkan berbagai proses, seperti perencanaan, memprioritaskan, menetapkan tujuan, dan manajemen diri. Peneliti menyimpulkan strategi meta-kognitif karena dilihat dari hasil tanggapan yang menjawab 80% dari mereka berusaha mendapatkan hasil belajar yang baik, untuk mendapatkan hasil belajar yang baik maka siswa harus merencanakan bagaimana bisa mendapatkan hasil belajar yang baik.

Abstract

Listening is one of the skills in English which should be mastered well by the person who learns it. As the foreign language, it is not easy for the Indonesian students to master this skill. Moreover during the lockdown period of Covid-19 epoch when the students have distance language learning as the government policy, the process of teaching and learning especially teaching listening becomes more difficult. The use of tool is so important to support the process of teaching and learning in this situation. WhatsApp is chosen as the tool in the process of teaching and learning. This study aims to explore the English undergraduate students’ perception of the utilizing WhatsApp as a tool of teaching listening to assist distance language learning. The data were analyzed using questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the research findings show that students have positive perception towards the use of WhatsApp for learning listening. It is an easy, fun, pleasant and good tool to use in the teaching learning process. It makes the students enthusiasm to learn and can help them to get the listening audio material which they must listen easily.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim to determine the use of code switching and code mixing, also to find out the factors causing code switching and code mixing in Indonesian language learning in class X SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City. The method used in this study is a Qualitative Descriptive Method. The data source was Indonesian language teacher and class X students of SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City, which only consisted of a portion of 20 students. The research data is the use of code switching and code mixing of class X students of the 6th eerily of Ternate City. Based on data analysis, it was concluded that the data collection technique used was direct observation of a problem located in SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City. This study aimed to obtain additional data. This interview was conducted to reveal the effectiveness of the use of code switching and code mixing in Indonesian language learning. Records conducted by researchers to obtain data from the research objectives. Occurrence of the use of code switching and code mixing in Indonesian language learning for class X students of SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City, namely the use of code switching and code mixing is the switching of formal language codes, informal language code switching, and the occurrence of code switching between languages while the code mix is mixed code of words, phrases, clauses. Factors causing code switching and code mixing in Indonesian language learning in class X SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City are the occurrence of code switching due to speakers or speakers, listeners or interlocutors, Changes in the situation due to the presence of a third person, Changes in the situation from formal to informal or conversely, Change of Speaker Topic while mixed code because of the background of the attitudes of speakers and linguists.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bermaksud mengetahui implementasi integrasi penguatan pendidikan karakter dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, dan mengetahui peningkatan kompetensi kepribadian mahasiswa melalui integrasi pendidikan karakter. Peneliti mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai utama karakter di dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris pada mahasiswa semester 2 program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris Universitas Khairun dalam menunjukan perilaku sebagai sumber data penelitian. Instrumen yang digunakan oleh penulis adalah dalam bentuk observasi dan tes. Data dalam penelitian ini terutama dikumpulkan melalui penggunaan pre-test, observasi, kuesioner, dan post-test. Setelah data dikumpulkan, peneliti menganalisis berdasarkan empat poin; berahlak mulia dan dapat menjadi teladan, dewasa, arif, dan kepribadian mantap dan stabil. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan teknik deskriptif.  Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa penerapan integrasi pendidikan karakter dalam pembelajaran bahasa  Inggris melalui tiga jenis kegiatan; kegiatan awal, kegiantan inti dan kegiatan ahir dapat meningkatkan kompetensi kepribadian mahasiswa. Rata-rata dari hasil pre-test adalah 60.1 dan rata-rata dari hasil post-test adalah 70,1.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to explore the effectiveness of using animated video in teaching descriptive writing at the fifth semester students of English Education study program of Khairun University. This research employed quantitative descriptive method from which the data of the test are taken from pre and posttest. 20 respondents were chosen by purposive sampling technique to be involved in this research. The data collection technique in this study was a test prior to teach writing using animated video and a posttest after that. From the data analysis of pretest, the respondent obtained the average score of 59.58 whereas their posttest score was 76.18. The score raised 16.60 points from the first to the second test. Overall, using animated video was proved effective in teaching descriptive writing at the fifth semester students of English education study program.

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the accuracy of the translation on English idiomatic expression into Indonesian language in the film entitled “Tangled”. This study applies descriptive qualitative with the content analysis that uses textual and comparative analysis. The data source of this study is the film “Tangled” and its subtitle into the Indonesian language. The data collection procedures includes reading the source and the target text of the film script and excerpt the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences, then compare both to generate the data corpus. The data are then analyzed based on the accuracy of translation by Nababan. Based on the data analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that there are accurate, less accurate and inaccurate translation on idiomatic expressions in the “Tangled” film subtitle. From 115 idiomatic expressions found in the movie, 82 of them are categorized as accurate translations, 18 idioms are less accurate and 15 are inaccurate translation. From those findings, it can be stated that the translation on idiomatic expressions in the tangled movie is quite good.
