JOURNAL BASTRA (Language and Literature) is a publicly accessible journal published by the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Halu Oleo University. This journal is published four times a year, every January, April, July, and October. This journal contains the results of research (field or literature studies), theoretical studies, and critical studies covering several areas of study as follows. Indonesian language education includes studies on linguistic learning, phonology learning, morphology learning, syntax learning, semantic learning, pragmatics learning, discourse learning, sociolinguistic learning, and psycholinguistic learning. Indonesian literature education includes studies on poetry learning, fiction prose learning, and drama and film learning. Abstract

This research analyzes and describes the intimate and formal language styles used in the fifth scene of the drama script Dewi Anjani, focusing on the interactions between Raden Nuna Putra Janjak, Dewi Anjani, and Datu Tuan. Drawing on Martin Joos's (1967) language style theory, this qualitative study employs a coding technique to identify and interpret relevant dialogues. The analysis of 22 key data points reveals that language style serves not only as a communicative tool but also as a powerful indicator of evolving character relationships. Initially, formal language dominates, signifying the absence of personal ties, hostility, and the assertion of authority. However, a significant shift to an intimate style occurs, reflecting a transformation from conflict to reconciliation and familial recognition. This transition enriches the dramatic meaning and narrative, illustrating how stylistic choices contribute to character development and the overall dramatic arc. The findings offer a deeper analytical framework for understanding the interplay of intimate and formal language in literary works and contribute to the theories on the function and impact of stylistic choices in dramatic narrative.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of personal deixis in the documentary film Dirty Vote and its implementation in Indonesian language learning for Grade XI high school students through a teaching module on short story writing. This research employed a qualitative method. The data were collected using observation techniques, including tapping, non-participatory observation, and note-taking. The data were derived from the utterances of Bivitri Susanti, Zainal Arifin Mochtar, and Feri Amsari in the documentary Dirty Vote directed by Dandhy Dwi Laksono. A total of 134 instances of personal deixis were identified, consisting of: (1) 29 first-person singular; (2) 71 first-person plural; (3) 8 second-person singular; (4) 12 third-person singular; and (5) 14 third-person plural deixis. Among these, the first-person plural deixis we appeared most frequently. Its use indicates inclusivity, in which the speaker involves the second person (the audience) in the conversation. In this study, the use of we serves as a rhetorical strategy by Bivitri, Zainal, and Feri to make the audience feel involved and become part of the film.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate two key aspects: 1) the influence of the Steinberg Four Stages method, supported by Snake and Ladder media, on the initial reading ability of first-grade students at SDIT Al-Bina, and 2) whether the initial reading ability of these students improved more significantly with this method and media compared to those using the Syllable method. This research was prompted by the observation that first-grade students at SDIT Al-Bina needed to improve their initial reading skills. The Steinberg Four-Stage method, combined with Snake and Ladder media, was explored as a potential solution to this issue, with the overall goal of enhancing these students' initial reading abilities. The study employed a Quasi-Experiment design with a Nonequivalent Control Group. The sample consisted of first-grade students from SDIT Al-Bina, divided into two groups of 28 students each: an experimental class and a control class. The findings indicate: 1) The Steinberg Four Stages method, aided by Snake and Ladder media, influenced students' initial reading ability by 72.9%. 2) There was a greater improvement in the initial reading ability of students who used the Steinberg Four Stages method with Snake and Ladder media compared to those who used the Syllable method. Abstract

This journal reviews "Emotion Representation in Tweets of X Sad-sad Community: A Psycholinguistic Study". The purpose of this study is to investigate the feelings expressed in the sad-sad community's Twitter tweets, which include both positive and negative values in their online social interactions. The topics covered and the setting of each article will determine this. By describing the data that already exists, a qualitative approach is employed. Techniques for gathering data were done in two steps: recording and listening. This study's tools included notebooks, cell phones, and laptops. The Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model was employed for data analysis. The findings demonstrated that researchers used the sad-sad community's Twitter tweets, which reflected all of the emotions that people experienced. The sad-sad community's Twitter tweets express a range of emotions, including hurt, sadness, disappointment, exhaustion, rage, and a sense of being undervalued. It can be seen that the interaction of X users with sad-sad tweets is a natural reaction of the body to something encountered.

Abstract

Literature is a representation of life’s realities conveyed through the imagination of the author. As one form of literary work, the novel not only presents a narrative but also reflects perspectives on social conditions, including the image of women. This study aims to examine the image of women in the novel Perempuan Bayangan by Netty Vergiantini, focusing on the main character, Ningrum. The study employs feminist literary theory and a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. The analysis centers on three main aspects of the female image: physical, psychological, and social. (1) The physical image includes descriptions of the character’s body and appearance. (2) The psychological image reflects the character’s mental state, emotions, and way of thinking. (3) Meanwhile, the social image is seen through the character’s position in society and her relationship with the surrounding environment. The results show that these three aspects are interconnected in shaping the portrayal of the female image in the novel. This study is expected to contribute to feminist literary studies and serve as a reference for future research on the representation of women in literary works. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi dan mendeskripsikan nilai-nilai sosial yang terkandung dalam legenda lokal yang terdapat di dalam Kawasan Cagar Budaya Nasional (KCBN) Muaro Jambi, salah satu kompleks candi terbesar di Asia Tenggara yang terletak di Provinsi Jambi, Indonesia. Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, penelitian difokuskan pada enam legenda yang berasal dari berbagai desa di kawasan KCBN, yaitu: Nyai Sulhah, Kuburan Kelingking Raden Mattaher, Lubuk Larangan, Taman Buyut Do, Asal Usul Desa Teluk Jambu, dan Asal Usul Dusun Mudo. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi, serta dianalisis menggunakan reduksi data, klasifikasi, dan deskripsi naratif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa legenda-legenda tersebut mengandung tiga kategori besar nilai-nilai sosial berdasarkan klasifikasi Zubaedi (2012): (1) nilai-nilai kasih sayang, meliputi bakti, suka menolong, kesetiaan, dan kasih sayang; (2) nilai-nilai tanggung jawab, meliputi rasa memiliki, disiplin, dan empati; dan (3) nilai-nilai kerukunan sosial, meliputi toleransi, kerja sama, dan demokrasi. Penelitian ini memberikan wawasan baru terhadap legenda daerah KCBN yang belum tereksplorasi dan berkontribusi terhadap pengayaan studi sastra lisan Indonesia dengan fokus pada kearifan lokal dan etika sosial. Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of oral literature-based storytelling methods in improving language literacy in elementary schools. The background of this study is based on the low literacy skills of elementary school students in Indonesia, which is caused by the lack of interesting and contextual learning methods. Storytelling is seen as an approach that is able to develop students' language skills comprehensively, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as instilling local character and cultural values. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with documentation study techniques from various journals, scientific articles, and digital sources. The results of the study show that oral literature-based storytelling is able to improve listening and speaking skills, enrich vocabulary, foster creativity, and increase students' interest in reading and writing. This approach also creates a fun and interactive learning atmosphere. In addition, digital storytelling also strengthens the effectiveness of this method through the use of technology such as animated videos, interactive audio, and other digital media. The integration of oral literature and modern technology makes learning more relevant to the needs and characteristics of today's students. This study recommends the development of a storytelling-based learning model to be widely applied in elementary schools, and encourages further research that examines the integration of this method in cross-subject learning.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low critical reading skills of students at SDN 037 Sabang and the limited innovation in the learning process. The research aimed to examine the effect of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) model assisted by digital flipbook media on students’ critical reading skills. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and nonequivalent control group design was applied. The sample consisted of 54 fourth-grade students selected through purposive sampling, with class IV C as the experimental group and class IV D as the control group. The learning process was carried out smoothly and effectively. During the planning stage, the researcher prepared instructional modules and critical reading assessment instruments. Throughout the learning activities, the classroom environment remained conducive, and students actively participated and responded well to the material. After implementing the CIRC model with digital flipbook assistance, the experimental class demonstrated improved critical reading skills. The average score increased from 50.33 (pretest) to 86.48 (posttest), while the control class improved from 48.41 to 76.89. The t-test showed a significance value of 0.046 (< 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two classes. The experimental class also achieved an N-Gain score of 79.60 (high category) and an effect size of 1.90 (large category). These findings suggest that the CIRC model, when supported by digital flipbook media, has a significant and positive impact on enhancing students’ critical reading abilities, making it an effective strategy to foster deeper reading comprehension and analytical thinking in elementary education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the story facts character, plot, and setting in the short story “Sa’id Hasan” by Kamil Kaylani using the structuralist approach of Robert Stanton. Literature, as a reflection of life and a medium of cultural communication, is closely tied to the social environment in which it emerges. Short stories, as a popular literary form, offer concise yet meaningful narratives, making structural analysis essential to fully comprehend their messages. The structuralist approach holds that the meaning of a literary work lies not in isolated elements, but in the integration of its intrinsic components that form a coherent structure. This research focuses on three story facts outlined by Stanton’s theory: character, plot, and setting. The short story “Sa’id Hasan” tells the tale of a simple man named Hasan who appears cheerful but harbors deep sorrow over the loss of his family. The findings reveal that the story is rich with life values and effectively conveys the protagonist’s emotional depth through its well-organized structure. This research contributes theoretically to the development of structuralist literary studies, particularly in Arabic short stories, and offers practical benefits as a reference for academic studies in the field of Arabic Language and Literature.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal how figurative language is used in the poem Ṣawt Ṣafīr al-Bulbul by al-Aṣmaʿī. It is a qualitative research using a descriptive-analytical method. The approach employed in this research is the five-level stylistic analysis theory proposed by Syihabudin Qolyubi. The results of the study show that the poem contains various stylistic features based on the levels of stylistic analysis, namely: (1) Phonological level (Muḥtawiyāt al-ṣawtī): the presence of sound repetition such as ṭab-ṭab, kaʿkʿaʿ, and other rhythmic sounds that create musicality; (2) Morphological level (Muḥtawiyāt al-ṣarfī): forms such as muharwiliy and waylī which are rich in emotional expression; (3) Syntactic level (Muḥtawiyāt al-naḥwī): the use of verbal sentences (jumlah fiʿliyyah) and inversion that contribute to expressive dynamics; (4) Semantic level (Muḥtawiyāt al-dalālī): the use of majāz (metaphor), kināyah (metonymy), and symbolism to convey themes of love and irony; and (5) Imagery level (Muḥtawiyāt al-taṣwīrī): the use of tashbīh (simile), istiʿārah (metaphor), and onomatopoeia to build vivid visual, auditory, and emotional atmospheres. This study demonstrates that al-Aṣmaʿī’s poem combines the power of language and rhythm in a form that is both aesthetic and rich in symbolism.
