Abstract

Keterampilan penjelasan ilmiah siswa dikategorikan menggunakan Taksonomi SOLO (Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome).

Abstract

Challenges in learning biology often arise, especially due to the complex nature of the material and requires a deep understanding of interrelated concepts. This causes many students to experience decreased motivation. The biology teacher of SMA NW Kopang keeps students motivated in learning. This study aims to understand the strategies applied by biology teachers at SMA NW Kopang in increasing students' learning motivation. This research uses a qualitative approach with the methods of observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The research findings show that teachers use various strategies such as contextual learning, the use of educational technology, personalised approaches, as well as the insertion of ice breaking and rewards to create an interactive and relevant learning atmosphere. In addition, the integration of Islamic values in biology learning provides a moral dimension that strengthens the relationship between science and student character. Internal factors such as student interest and confidence, as well as external factors such as teacher support and learning environment, were found to have a significant influence on learning motivation. These strategies not only help students understand complex biological material, but also encourage their active involvement in learning. This research contributes to the development of learning methods that are innovative and relevant to students' needs, particularly in Islamic-based schools. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term impact of these strategies on students' learning outcomes across different educational contexts.

Abstract

Natural antibiotics may offer a solution to the growing issue of pathogenic bacterial resistance caused by the widespread use of synthetic antibiotics. This study investigates the diversity and potential of Actinobacteria from the rhizosphere of Pinus in the Selorejo Bedengan Forest, Malang City, which has been exposed to synthetic agricultural chemicals for an extended period. Soil samples were collected and analyzed for various environmental factors, including pH, moisture, organic matter, and light intensity. A total of seven Actinobacteria isolates were identified, belonging to the genera Streptomyces and Nocardia. The diversity of these isolates was assessed using the Shannon-Wiener index, yielding a moderate diversity value (H' = 2.74). Antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli and Shigella dysenteriae using the pitting method. The results indicated that isolates AC5 and AC7 exhibited inhibition zones of ≥11 mm and ≥12 mm, respectively, categorizing them as having strong antibacterial activity. These findings highlight the significant potential of local Actinobacteria as candidates for the production of natural antibacterial compounds to combat pathogenic bacteria. This research not only supports the development of more environmentally friendly antibiotic alternatives but also encourages the sustainable use of local microbial resources.

Abstract

Microbiology literacy is an important skill for prospective biology teachers to be able to understand, teach, and apply microbiology concepts appropriately in life and learning. This study aims to describe the microbiology literacy profile of biology education students at Mataram University based on competency and attitude dimensions after completing microbiology courses. The study employs a quantitative descriptive approach using instruments developed based on the PISA 2015 science literacy framework. The research subjects were students who had taken microbiology courses. Data were analyzed descriptively to determine literacy score categories. The results showed that students' microbiology literacy was generally in the moderate to low category. In the competency dimension, the highest scores were in the ability to interpret data and scientific evidence, while the lowest scores were in the ability to evaluate and design scientific investigations. In the dimension of attitude, the majority of students were in the moderate category, with the highest scores in the assessment of scientific approaches and the lowest scores in interest in microbiology. These low scores indicate the need to strengthen higher-order thinking skills, hands-on experience in research design, and learning that links microbiology concepts to real-life contexts. This study recommends the use of project-based, problem-based, and socio-scientific issue-based learning strategies, as well as evaluations that require the application of concepts and analysis. This approach is expected to enhance students' conceptual understanding, analytical skills, and scientific attitudes in a balanced manner.

Abstract

The rhizosphere of mangroves is a microhabitat rich in root exudates and organic matter, making it an ideal environment for the growth of Actinomycetes. This study aims to analyze the abundance of Actinomycetes in the mangrove rhizosphere at three different locations in Sekotong District, West Lombok: Bagek Kembar, Tanjung Batu, and Buwun Mas. Sampling was conducted using purposive sampling in the dominant root zone at a depth of ±20 cm. Actinomycetes isolation was performed using the surface plate method on SCA medium supplemented with nystatin as an antifungal agent. The results showed that the highest abundance was found in the rhizosphere of Rhizophora mucronata at Bagek Kembar with 4.6 × 10⁵ CFU/g, while the lowest was in Avicennia marina at Tanjung Batu with 1 × 10⁵ CFU/g. In general, Rhizophora mucronata showed higher abundance than Avicennia marina in all locations. This difference was influenced by root exudate characteristics, root system structure, and soil physicochemical conditions such as aeration and organic matter content. This study concludes that the rhizosphere of Rhizophora mucronata in Bagek Kembar is a more supportive habitat for the growth of Actinomycetes. This finding serves as an important basis for further exploration of Actinomycetes isolates from mangroves as potential sources of biocontrol agents and antimicrobial compound producers.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems harbor diverse microorganisms with important ecological and biotechnological roles. Actinobacteria, in particular, are well known as producers of bioactive compounds and potential biocontrol agents against plant pathogens, making their exploration relevant for sustainable agriculture. This study aimed to isolate and characterize Actinobacteria from the rhizosphere of mangroves in Bagek Kembar, West Lombok, and to evaluate their antagonistic potential against Ralstonia solanaciearum, plant disease agent. Soil samples were collected using a quadrant method, while environmental parameters such as pH, temperature, humidity, and salinity were measured to assess habitat suitability. Actinobacteria were isolated and identified through Gram staining and morphological observation, their abundance was calculated using the Total Plate Count method, and antagonistic activity was tested using the agar well diffusion assay. The results showed that soil pH was relatively neutral, with temperature and salinity suitable for Actinobacteria growth. Five isolates (ACT R1–R5) were obtained, all Gram-positive with filamentous hyphae-like morphology. Total Plate Count analysis indicated high abundance (3.2 × 105), although the diversity of isolates recovered was relatively low. Antagonistic assays revealed that ACT R2 and ACT R4 moderate inhibitory effect, and ACT R1, ACT R3, and ACT R5 weak. Overall, these findings demonstrate that mangrove rhizospheres in West Lombok are a promising source of Actinobacteria with significant potential as environmentally friendly biocontrol agents

Abstract

Secondary metabolites from actinobacteria have been known to have many potentials as antioxidants, antibiotics, anti-cancer, and others. Various studies have been conducted and published regarding the findings of the potential of actinobacteria. This study aims to determine the development of research related to the potential of actinobacteria originating from mangrove areas and their secondary metabolites as natural antibiotics with bibliometric methods assisted by the VOS Viewer application. The articles used in this study are articles published from 2014 to 2024 and taken from the PubMed database. A total of 78 articles analyzed with VOS Viewer showed that over the past decade, the development of research on this topic still revolves around actinobacteria, microbial sensitivity tests, anti-bacterial agents, and Streptomyces as indicated by the high occurrence of these words in the titles and abstracts of the articles analyzed. The potential for research development can be directed at antineoplastic agents, cell proliferation, and mass spectrometry because the use of these terms is still minimal. However, analysis using other databases is needed as a comparison to get clearer results related to the development of research on the potential of actinobacteria derived from mangroves and their secondary metabolites as antibitoics.
