Abstract

Since the enactment of the Koeli Ordonantie in 1880 by the Dutch colonial government, large plantations on the east coast of Sumatra began to open up opportunities for Javanese and Chinese women to be employed as laborers. There are also those who follow their husbands to work on plantations. The planters took advantage of the presence of women on the plantations to create entertainment for the male workers, because at that time many coolies ran away from the plantations, due to the heavy workload. The easy flow of money makes unpaired female workers take advantage of opportunities. They choose dual jobs as laborers during the day, and prostitutes at night. The impact is the spread of various disease outbreaks, one of which is venereal disease. In the context of social history, this research uses archives as its methodology. The archives come from Koloniaal Verslag, Verslagvoor Geneeskundige, Verslag van den Dienst van Arbeidinspectie, Tijdscriftvoor Geneeskundige, reports from Deli Planter Vereneging and Memorie van Overgave, and other support books

Abstract

Changes in people's behavior towards women's lack of equality and human rights Women as a whole have not been able to gain the right to grow and equate with men. Women tend to become marginalized individuals and become subordinate to men. We know why many cigarette factories employ women as laborers, while men are employed in important roles such as corporate managers, overseers, and staff of tobacco companies. So why are there so many women who are placed as workers or regular employees? This indicates a lack of equality for women, and always assume that man is still regarded as a strong figure and responsible for finding and positioning the company or factory. Whereas women are weaker figures assigned to organize and as ordinary employers may even be merely appropriate for household affairs. When women enter the world of work, they are still faced with disenchanted behavior and a lack of justice for equality between men and women. In the competition of the working world, women are also in the lowest position compared with men. It is needed to give women opportunities to get equal access to men. This goal can be realized if the regulations made by the state are carried out properly and if the company is committed to giving fair treatment to women, eliminating gender discrimination, and providing human rights and equality between men and women.

Abstract

This research explores women's pesantren as a forum for Islamic religious education for women to learn Islam and other soft skills that will be needed in the future. The location of this research is Nurul Huda Islamic Boarding School, Pandansari Batang Regency. Qualitative research methods, in-depth interview data collection techniques, and participatory observation of this research were conducted. The results of this research show that it is Pesantren Nurul Huda, a traditional Islamic boarding school or pesantren whose students live together under the guidance of a Pak Kyai and Bu Nyai. Pak Kyai and Bu Nyai guide their students to become good female leaders by adhering to the teachings of Islam because Islam does not prohibit women from being leaders in society. Women's boarding schools empower women to create gender equality between men and women, but that does not mean women have to be equal to men. Women's empowerment prioritises women's independence so that they are not too dependent on men.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the ways in which widows of conflict victims manage their assets and their abilities in an effort to survive and improve social welfare after the Poso conflict. Data were obtained from two sources: an analysis of literature during the Poso conflict and interviews with victims and their relatives. The results of the study show that widows in desperate situations save their lives from threats and riots by utilising social capital by relying on relatives with ownership. Assets and capabilities are linked by access and property ownership. This was built before the conflict occurred so as to strengthen the bonds of post-conflict social capital with kinship strength among the closest relatives, such as parents, siblings, and nephews or nieces, based on the same religion, for their survival.

Abstract

This research focuses on discussing the division of productive, reproductive, and social gender roles in dual-career families in the Inderalaya Raya sub-district. The division of roles in a dual-career family certainly has its own difficulties and challenges, such as the division of roles involving children, work, household, and time. The purpose of this study is to identify the division of roles between husbands and wives who work in deciding the division of roles in family life. The research method used is descriptive-qualitative with a narrative research strategy. This study used role theory, and data was obtained from six pairs of husband and wife informants and three child informants through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that the husband and wife have agreed on a joint decision to balance work responsibilities in the formal sector and household affairs, which can be in the form of full direct involvement of the husband and wife or assistance from a third party in carrying out the reproductive role. The multiple roles that are carried out will experience role conflict if there are two or more pressures that occur simultaneously. Role theory states that role strain and role failure carried out by someone will also lead to conflict and can even lead to gender inequality. However, workers and parents who carry out their roles well are made role models by the child

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the people of Indonesia, especially in Bandung, which is marked by an increase in the number of layoffs and unemployment. Unemployment dominated by working-age people is a threat to gender equality due to uncertain economic conditions that have a worse impact on women than men. This phenomenon also has an impact on increasing violence against women and divorce in Bandung City in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, showing that women's awareness of the values of gender equality, women's empowerment, and sustainable development goals have not been realized. This article uses descriptive quantitative research methods supported by SPSS software. The data sources we need to obtain include secondary and primary data. In the analysis that has been done, the data shows that women have shown empowerment, which can be seen from their involvement in activities carried out by women in the city of Bandung. The active role of the government and related institutions is still needed to strengthen awareness of gender equality issues by all parties as a very important factor in achieving equitable and sustainable development.

Abstract

Films as part of mass media have a big impact on human life and tend to depict women as weak, helpless, and targets of crime. In the film "Jilbab Traveler: Love Sparks in Korea," the character of a Muslim female traveler becomes a representation of a woman wearing a hijab in the Islamic religion. This film tells the story of the adventures of a Muslim woman who travels around the world wearing her hijab, creating an image of a successful modern Muslim woman and becoming an inspiration for Muslim women today. The author wants to explore gender representation using a qualitative approach and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. The focus is on how the issue of gender equality is depicted in the film and the efforts for gender equality contained in it. The analysis stage was carried out by watching the film in its entirety, capturing the screen on relevant scenes related to the representation of gender equality, and then analyzing it using Roland Barthes' semiotic concept, which considers the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings contained in the scene. The results show that the main character, Rania, succeeded in achieving her dreams by daring to explore the world without fear, but the semiotic analysis also revealed gender stereotypes attached to several characters. This analysis shows how the film constructs, reproduces, or responds to gender norms in a cultural context and opens up space for understanding gender dynamics and cultural identity in various conditions.

Abstract

The protracted conflict between Israel and Palestine has not ended, even though peace negotiations have been held several times, such as in 2010. As a result of this conflict, many Palestinian women lost their rights, and this attracted the sympathy of the world community, which then carried out the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. This article aims to see the influence of this movement in advocating for the problems faced by Palestinian women at that time. The method used is to analyze various global society activities, reports, policies, and documents related to the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement in various parts of the world during 2010 using the Transnational Advocacy Networks (TANs) theory. The results show that during 2010, people in various parts of the world continuously carried out the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, which demanded the return of the rights of Palestinians, including Palestinian women. Even though these movements did not end the conflict, they saw the mobilization of transnational networks to advocate for the rights of Palestinian women. This means that peace between Israel and Palestine is possible if the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement continues in global society.
