Abstract

Low English literacy has a major impact on the education sector. In particular, it has an impact on less qualified human resources. This study aims to explore the students’ perception of reading habits on English fiction books to improve English vocabulary in Indonesian higher education. This study used a qualitative case study method. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with four students consisting of two female and two male students from the English Education Department. The results of the study reveal that students believe that reading fiction books can help them memorize English vocabulary, and English fiction books can enrich English vocabulary, especially new words. On the other hand, some challenges appear in reading English fiction books. These include the difficulty of understanding unfamiliar words in English fiction books among male students and the need for sufficient time to read English fiction books completely. Finally, the implication of this study was discussed.

Abstract

The study on ICT Engagement and Digital Competence of Preservice English Teachers was a descriptive correlational study conducted among 103 preservice English teachers at the University of Mindanao-Matina Campus, Davao City. This study aimed to identify the levels of ICT engagement and digital competence of preservice English teachers and examine the prevalent relationship between the variables. In gathering the data, this study adopted questionnaires and sampled the total population. The data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and Pearson's r correlation. Based on the findings, the preservice English teachers have a high level of ICT engagement and a very high level of digital competence. Moreover, the correlation between the variables is moderate, positive, and direct with r-value of 0.427, which suggests that ICT engagement is a construct of digital competence—the more regulated to engage in ICT a person is, the more competent they would become in using ICT. Moreover, the results specify that ICT-related training and support given to language teachers must revolve around troubleshooting digital issues and digital content creation. This study, as a whole, further explored, quantified, and discussed emerging interests in the role of technology in language education, addressing its empirical gap.

Abstract

This qualitative corpus-based study employing epistemic analysis uncovered the epistemic modality (EM) markers used and their communicative functions in the seven inaugural speeches of the seven Philippine 5th Republic presidents. The findings revealed the preponderant use of epistemic modal verbs with 152 occurrences (81.72%), followed by epistemic lexical verbs with 20 occurrences (10.75%), epistemic modal adverbs with 9 occurrences (4.84%), and epistemic modal adjectives with 5 occurrences (2.69%). Moreover, the top-five modal verbs operated in the presidential inaugurals are will with 97 instances (66.9%), can with 28 instances (19.31%), shall with 9 instances (6.21%), would with 6 instances (4.14%), and could with 5 instances (3.44%). Meanwhile, should and might were never used by any president. In this regard, the presidents are confident, committed, bold, and certain with their statements; some are tentative and quite confident but still communicatively sensitive and polite; and few are uncertain but still diplomatic. Further, the communicative functions of the EM markers were categorized to high-intermediate-low modality values, certain-probable-possible semantic meanings, and close-near-distant epistemic distances.

Abstract

The communication revolution is growing in the assumption that communication is a vital element in human life. The problem that emerges in the use of communication technology is the perception of the Indonesian people that the social, educational, and economic spheres of technology are regarded as tools that can solve the problems of this world of life easily without paying attention to the effects of these three areas. Industry implications in the field of communications technology are significant for social life, economic growth, and educational dynamics in Indonesia, but also have a threat of negative impacts that are difficult to avoid. The industrialization of the media is increasingly demonstrating how much society and all aspects connected with it, including social, economic, and educational aspects, are in need of information through mass media technology that is growing so rapidly in the age of globalization.

Abstract

This phenomenological study aimed to describe the teaching experiences, coping mechanisms, insights, and new teaching techniques of teachers in teaching language skills to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) amidst pandemic. This study used a qualitative research design and the Colaizzi analysis strategy in analyzing the results. The five licensed Special Education teachers in both elementary and high school levels were selected through purposive sampling. The researchers constructed an interview guide and conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews. Findings and analyses of the study showed that the sudden shift of the programs and the intensified difficulty in getting the attention of the students with ASD were the challenges these teachers experienced. Consequently, the teachers motivated themselves to continue teaching, but sometimes the support from various support systems was inadequate. Further, they adapted a medical strategy and modified some traditional techniques to ensure the effectiveness of the instruction. The teachers can take advantage of the impairments with their teaching techniques.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools are Islamic educational institutions that have a significant role in character formation and intellectual development of the young generation of Muslims in Indonesia. Today, Islamic boarding schools are divided into two main categories: Salaf (traditional) Islamic boarding schools and Khalaf (modern) Islamic boarding schools. This study aims to identify the curriculum and learning system at the Khalaf Islamic boarding school, which combines religious education with general education in order to prepare students to face the challenges of the globalization era. The results of the study show that Khalaf Islamic boarding schools not only maintain religious learning through traditional methods such as sorogan and bandongan, but also adopt modern learning systems, including formal classes and technology integration. The Khalaf Islamic boarding school curriculum consists of religious and general curriculums, which are designed in balance between religious knowledge and contemporary science. In conclusion, the Khalaf Islamic boarding schools offer an adaptive educational model in line with the demands of the era and needs of society in the digital era without losing the noble characters as the identity of Islam.

Abstract

This study investigated the strategies trainers use in language proficiency enhancement training, as perceived by student call center agents. It specifically examined strategies for developing the four macro skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and grammar skills. Using thematic analysis, it was found that various strategies were employed. Firstly, reading strategies involve active reading and practice reading. Secondly, in terms of writing, their strategies were the process-based approach and the rule-based strategy. Thirdly, the strategy used in listening was active listening. Fourthly, the speaking strategies involved simulation and speaking tests. Lastly, for grammar skills, the strategy used was direct instruction. Participants also shared insights on the training they received from BPO companies, which included challenges in understanding diverse communication styles, struggles with fluent and natural communication, and language acquisition and development strategies. The results imply that understanding call center agents’ perspectives on language training can enrich the curriculum by offering effective strategies, such as hands-on simulated activities, active learning, and student-centered pedagogies, optimizing learning experiences and fostering more effective communication skills. Furthermore, the results underscore the importance of using learner input to continually evolve and optimize curriculum design, emphasizing the transformative impact of learning and learner-centered approaches on educational practices.
