Abstract

Although the teaching of classical Islamic texts has been widely studied in the context of Islamic education, research specifically examining the implementation of Kitab Alala instruction in shaping students’ character in madrasahs remains limited. This study aimed to describe the implementation of Kitab Alala instruction, analyze its contribution to students’ character development, and identify the supporting and inhibiting factors affecting its implementation at MTs Al-Azhar Peterongan Jombang. The study employed a qualitative approach with a field research design. The research informants consisted of the head of the madrasah, the Kitab Alala teacher, the Grade VII homeroom teacher, and Grade VII students selected purposively. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that Kitab Alala instruction was implemented through the stages of planning, implementation, and evaluation using the mubasyarah method. The instruction contributed to the development of students’ discipline, responsibility, and courtesy. Its successful implementation was supported by teacher competence, the religious environment of the madrasah, and positive habituation, whereas the inhibiting factors included limited learning facilities, variations in students’ ability to understand the material, and limited proficiency in Arabic and the Pegon script. This study concludes that Kitab Alala instruction can serve as an effective strategy for instilling character values when supported by systematic planning, exemplary teacher conduct, and a conducive educational environment. These findings enrich the literature on character education based on classical Islamic texts and provide practical implications for madrasahs in improving instructional quality and strengthening students’ character development. Abstract

The increase in students’ consumptive behavior is associated with the high intensity of social media use and strong interactions with peers. This study aimed to analyze the partial and simultaneous effects of social media and peers on the consumptive behavior of students at MAN 2 Bukittinggi. The study employed a quantitative approach with an associative research design. The research sample comprised 188 students selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed through simple linear regression and multiple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS. The results showed that social media had a positive and significant effect on consumptive behavior, with a contribution of 52.3%, whereas peers had a positive and significant effect, with a contribution of 49.2%. Simultaneously, social media and peers had a positive and significant effect on consumptive behavior, with a contribution of 61.6%. The regression equation Y = 13.588 + 0.583X₁ + 0.568X₂ indicates that social media had a slightly more dominant effect than peers. These findings confirm that the higher the intensity of social media use and the stronger the influence of peers, the greater the tendency toward consumptive behavior among students. This study provides practical implications for schools, teachers, and parents to strengthen students’ digital literacy, financial literacy, and self-control through integrated guidance to minimize consumptive behavior.

Abstract

Although the design of animated film storyboards featuring local cultural themes has developed, studies specifically representing Tingkuluak through thumbnail sketching techniques remain limited. This study aimed to design the storyboard for the animated film “Tingkuluak: Pusaka Perempuan Minang dalam Sehelai Kain” as both a production reference and a medium for Minangkabau cultural education. The study employed a qualitative descriptive design approach supported by simple quantitative data using a Pipeline Animation design. Data were collected through a literature review, an interview with the Chair of Ikatan Bundo Kanduang Kota Padang, questionnaires, documentation, alpha testing, and beta testing involving five respondents. The data were analyzed descriptively through processes of categorization, interpretation, and visual evaluation. The study produced a script, thumbnail sketches, a final storyboard, and an animatic capable of systematically organizing the storyline, visual composition, camera angles, and the presentation of information about Tingkuluak. The beta-testing results yielded a mean score of 4.49 on a five-point scale, with the highest score of 5.00 obtained for suitability as a cultural education medium. These findings indicate that the thumbnail sketching technique supports visual exploration and improves the efficiency of the storyboard design process. This study emphasizes the importance of applying this technique in the development of animated films based on local culture, while also indicating the need for improvements in composition, character expression, transitions, movement, cinematography, and audio to enhance the quality of the production.

Abstract

Although advances in digital media offer new opportunities for cultural preservation through educational games, the design of visual assets that specifically represent Tingkuluak in a pixel art style remains limited. This study aimed to design 2D pixel art animation assets for the mobile game “Tingkuluak: Pusaka Perempuan Minang dalam Sehelai Kain” as a medium for introducing Minangkabau culture to younger generations. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a design process based on the Game Development Life Cycle (GDLC). Data were collected through a semi-structured interview with one customary informant, a questionnaire administered to 101 respondents, a literature review, visual documentation, alpha testing by one expert, and beta testing involving five users. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis and descriptive statistics encompassing frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The results of the study produced character, environment, property, interface, mini-game, and five types of Tingkuluak assets with a consistent visual style. The beta-testing results showed mean scores of 5.00 for suitability as an educational medium, 4.80 for game attractiveness, and 4.20 for the comfort of character animation. These findings reinforce the potential use of pixel art and GDLC in the development of culture-based digital media. This study confirms that cultural representation accuracy, visual readability, and interactivity are important aspects of educational game asset design and provides practical implications for developing cultural preservation media that appeal to younger generations. Further refinement of the animations and testing with broader user groups are required to improve the quality and acceptability of the product.

Abstract

Although the use of games as a medium for introducing culture continues to develop, studies that specifically discuss the process of translating Minangkabau cultural identity into pixel art visual assets remain limited. This study aimed to design the visual assets for the game “Jejak Pagaruyuang” as an interactive medium for introducing Minangkabau culture. The study employed a research and development approach using the Multimedia Development Life Cycle model, which includes the stages of concept, design, material collection, production, and testing. Data were obtained through direct observation at Istana Basa Pagaruyung, visual documentation, literature review, and functional testing, and were then analyzed descriptively and qualitatively based on visual appropriateness, asset consistency, and functional success. The results of the study produced main character, NPC, environment, cultural object, user interface, and supporting animation assets developed using Aseprite. Alpha testing of five components showed that all assets functioned in accordance with the design. These findings indicate that form simplification, color palette consistency, silhouette readability, and the appropriateness of cultural attributes are important elements in the design of culture-themed pixel art. This study contributes to the development of visual communication and digital cultural games and broadens understanding of visual asset design based on local cultural identity.

Abstract

Shifts in perceptions of the institution of marriage among Millennials and Generation Z have become increasingly pronounced alongside social, economic, technological, and cultural changes. This study aims to comparatively analyze the perceptions, values, future expectations, and challenges of both generations in understanding and navigating marriage in Lubuk Kupang Urban Village, Lubuklinggau City. The study employed a qualitative approach with a comparative descriptive design. Informants were selected using purposive sampling based on data saturation and comprised eight primary informants, namely four Millennials and four members of Generation Z, as well as one supporting informant from the urban village administration. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and documentation studies and were subsequently analyzed interactively through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data credibility was established through source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that Millennials view marriage from a pragmatic-realistic perspective, emphasizing emotional readiness, economic stability, and moral and spiritual foundations. In contrast, Generation Z views marriage from a pragmatic-calculative perspective, emphasizing risk mitigation, individual autonomy, mental health, and career independence. Despite their different orientations, both generations emphasize the importance of egalitarian partnerships, financial transparency, and the rejection of costly traditional wedding celebrations. These findings affirm that delaying marriage is regarded as a protective and proactive strategy for supporting household sustainability. This study formulates the Adaptive Rational-Risk Partnership Theory, which positions psychological maturity, financial stability, and partnership equality as the principal pillars of modern family resilience.

Abstract

Although the use of immersive technology to introduce cultural heritage continues to develop, media integrating the forms, sounds, and simulated performance of traditional Minangkabau musical instruments remain limited. This study aimed to design and develop an immersive technology-based Minangkabau traditional music application as an interactive medium for cultural introduction. The study employed a research and development approach using the Multimedia Development Life Cycle model, which comprises the concept, design, material collecting, assembly, testing, and distribution stages. The data sources included traditional musical instruments, scientific documents, and one purposively selected Minangkabau music practitioner. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, a literature review, documentation, and functional testing, and were subsequently analyzed descriptively using SWOT analysis. The result of the study was a Windows-based virtual reality application featuring three-dimensional models of talempong, canang, and gandang katindiak, along with recordings of the original instrument sounds. The implementation of a collider system, virtual reality controllers, a touch-detection script, and Audio Source enabled users to play the instruments using both hands, including producing the distinct “dum” and “tak” sounds of the gandang katindiak. Internal testing indicated that the navigation functions, object responses, and audio output operated according to the design. These findings extend the use of immersive technology as an interactive medium for introducing and preserving traditional Minangkabau music. However, the application’s effectiveness in improving users’ understanding of and interest in Minangkabau culture still requires testing with broader user groups.

Abstract

The contribution of local Islamic scholars to the development of Islamic education in Indonesia, particularly in Tapanuli Selatan, warrants examination to strengthen understanding of the history of community-based Islamic education. Although Islamic education in the Mandailing region developed through surau, madrasas, and Islamic boarding schools, studies positioning local figures as the principal drivers of Islamic educational institutions remain relatively limited. Previous studies have generally discussed Syekh Abdul Wahab Lubis as a propagator of Islam in Mandailing Natal, whereas his role as a prominent figure in Islamic education from a historical-biographical perspective has not been comprehensively examined. This study aimed to analyze the life background, struggles, and contributions of Syekh Abdul Wahab Lubis to the development of Islamic education in Muara Mais Jambur during the 1944–1991 period. The study employed the historical method with a biographical approach through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data were obtained through interviews, archives, documents, and various relevant written sources. The results showed that after returning from Darul Ulum Makkah in 1944, Syekh Abdul Wahab Lubis played an active role in developing Islamic education through the organization of majelis taklim, the expansion of da‘wah activities, the establishment of Madrasah Diniyah Awaliyah, and the construction of Pondok Pesantren Darul Ulum. The presence of these institutions contributed to improving the community’s religious understanding, developing generations of Islamic scholars and students, and advancing Islamic education in Muara Mais Jambur. This study concluded that Syekh Abdul Wahab Lubis was a prominent figure in Islamic education who successfully integrated da‘wah, education, and community development in establishing a community-based Islamic education system. These findings contribute to enriching the historiography of local Islamic education and may serve as a reference for research on and the preservation of the history of Islamic scholars in Tapanuli Selatan.
