Abstract

Although waste problems in the school environment require informative and engaging educational media, the development of infographic-style motion graphics tailored to the characteristics of elementary school students still requires further attention. This study aimed to design an infographic-style motion graphic as an educational medium concerning types of waste, their environmental impacts, and cleanliness-maintaining behaviors for students at SDN 52 Parupuk Tabing. The study employed a research and development approach with a design thinking framework comprising the empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test stages. The participants consisted of 15–20 students from Grades II, IV, and V selected through convenience sampling, one teacher, and a media expert. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, a literature review, and questionnaires, and were subsequently analyzed descriptively. The study produced a motion graphic entitled Jaga Lingkungan Yuk dari Sampah, with a duration of 3 minutes and 53 seconds, consisting of six scenes, presented in MP4 format and Full HD resolution, and integrating flat illustrations, two-dimensional animation, typography, narration, music, and sound effects. The expert evaluation indicated the need for revisions to the animation timing and transitions. These findings indicate that motion graphics can be developed as a communicative, engaging, and contextual supplementary medium for environmental education among elementary school students.

Abstract

Crest geometry is a critical determinant of energy transformation in open-channel flow; however, direct laboratory comparisons between ogee-crested and round-crested weirs remain limited. This study aimed to analyze and compare energy loss across both weir types under equivalent experimental conditions. A quantitative laboratory-experimental design was employed using an open-channel flume at the Hydraulics Laboratory, Department of Civil Engineering, Universitas Negeri Padang. Each weir model was tested in three trials, with channel-bed elevation, flow depth, and flow velocity measured at the upstream, crest, and downstream sections. Total energy loss was calculated using Bernoulli’s equation, while frictional loss was estimated using the Darcy–Weisbach equation. The ogee-crested weir produced a mean total energy loss of 14.63 cm, whereas the round-crested weir produced 13.74 cm, yielding a difference of 0.89 cm. Frictional losses were 0.86 cm for the ogee-crested weir and 1.18 cm for the round-crested weir. Reynolds numbers of 33,408 and 40,880, respectively, indicated turbulent flow in both models. These findings demonstrate that total energy loss was governed not only by frictional resistance but also by turbulence and crest geometry. Under the tested conditions, the round-crested weir retained flow energy more effectively than the ogee-crested weir. This study contributes empirical evidence on the hydraulic performance of different crest geometries and provides practical insight for selecting weir configurations in open-channel flow applications.

Abstract

Used cooking oil is cooking oil that has undergone degradation due to repeated use at high temperatures, thereby producing oxidation, hydrolysis, and polymerization compounds that reduce oil quality and potentially endanger health and the environment. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of variations in the composition of potato stem carbon (Solanum tuberosum L.) and bleaching earth on the quality of used cooking oil and to determine the most effective adsorbent composition. Potato stem carbon was characterized through proximate analysis and then combined with bleaching earth at mass ratios of 75:25, 50:50, and 25:75 to purify used cooking oil. The quality of the purified oil was evaluated based on density, flow rate, acid value, and saponification value. The proximate analysis results showed that potato stem carbon had a moisture content of 10.05%, an ash content of 9.50%, a volatile matter content of 2.40%, and a fixed carbon content of 88.10%. Variations in adsorbent composition affected the physicochemical properties of used cooking oil, with the 50:50 composition demonstrating the best performance based on the lowest density of 0.9353 g/mL, the highest flow rate of 0.3080 mL/s, the lowest acid value of 4.8378 mg KOH/g, and the highest saponification value of 66.1884 mg KOH/g. These findings confirm that the combination of potato stem carbon and bleaching earth at a mass ratio of 1:1 produced the most effective synergistic effect in improving the quality of used cooking oil through the adsorption process and has the potential to be used as an alternative adsorbent for used cooking oil purification.

Abstract

Used cooking oil is waste generated from repeated frying that undergoes quality deterioration due to oxidation, hydrolysis, and polymerization reactions, thereby potentially causing adverse effects on health and the environment. One method that can be used to improve the quality of used cooking oil is adsorption using a combination of biomass-derived carbon and bleaching earth. This study aimed to analyze the effect of variations in the mass of nipa palm stalk carbon (Nypa fruticans) combined with bleaching earth on the characteristics of used cooking oil after the purification process. Nipa palm stalk carbon was obtained through carbonization at 300 °C for 1 hour. The purification process was conducted on 100 mL of used cooking oil using carbon mass variations of 1, 3, and 5 g, with a constant bleaching earth mass of 0.5 g. The characteristics of the purified oil were evaluated based on density, flow rate, acid value, and saponification value, whereas the carbon characteristics were analyzed through proximate testing. The proximate analysis results showed that nipa palm stalk carbon had a moisture content of 0.0148%, an ash content of 5.27%, a volatile matter content of 2.5670%, and a fixed carbon content of 92.15%. Increasing the carbon mass from 1 to 5 g reduced the oil density from 0.9326 to 0.9085 g/mL and the acid value from 49.112 to 12.256 mg KOH/g, while increasing the flow rate from 0.795 to 2.18 mL/s and the saponification value from 95.161 to 165.180 mg KOH/g. The best treatment was obtained using a combination of 5 g of nipa palm stalk carbon and 0.5 g of bleaching earth. These findings indicate that increasing the mass of nipa palm stalk carbon in the adsorbent combination improved the physicochemical characteristics of used cooking oil. The combination of nipa palm stalk carbon and bleaching earth has the potential to be developed as a simple, economical, and environmentally friendly biomass-based adsorbent for used cooking oil purification.

Abstract

Repeated use of cooking oil causes a decline in oil quality due to the formation of free fatty acids, polar compounds, and oxidation products. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of variations in the composition of sugar palm leaf carbon (Arenga pinnata) and bleaching earth on the quality of used cooking oil through an adsorption-based purification process. Sugar palm leaf carbon was obtained through carbonization at 300 °C for 1 hour and was then characterized using proximate analysis. The purification process was conducted using three adsorbent compositions, namely K75-B25, K50-B50, and K25-B75. Adsorption effectiveness was evaluated based on density, flow rate, acid value, and saponification value. The proximate analysis results showed that sugar palm leaf carbon had a moisture content of 4.49%, a volatile matter content of 2.20%, an ash content of 9.00%, and a fixed carbon content of 88.8%. All treatment variations improved the quality of used cooking oil compared with the untreated sample. The K75-B25 treatment demonstrated the best performance, with the lowest density of 0.9407 g/mL, the highest flow rate of 0.3227 mL/s, the lowest acid value of 4.8378 mg KOH/g, and the highest saponification value of 50.9149 mg KOH/g. These findings indicate that increasing the proportion of sugar palm leaf carbon resulted in greater adsorption effectiveness than increasing the proportion of bleaching earth. Thus, sugar palm leaf carbon combined with bleaching earth has the potential to be used as an alternative adsorbent to improve the physicochemical characteristics of used cooking oil through a purification process.

Abstract

Purification of used cooking oil is necessary to reduce the content of impurity compounds formed during repeated use so that the physicochemical quality of the oil can be improved. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a mixture of taro corm peel carbon (Colocasia esculenta) and bleaching earth as an adsorbent in the purification of used cooking oil. The carbon was prepared by carbonizing taro corm peel at 250 °C for 1 hour and was then combined with bleaching earth in five adsorbent compositions, namely K100, K75BE25, K50BE50, K25BE75, and BE100. The adsorption process was conducted using 5 g of adsorbent in 100 mL of used cooking oil with stirring at 200 rpm for 60 minutes at room temperature. The carbon characteristics were analyzed based on moisture content, ash content, and fixed carbon content, whereas the quality of the purified oil was evaluated based on acid value, saponification value, density, and flow rate. The characterization results showed that taro corm peel carbon had a moisture content of 2.93%, an ash content of 8.49%, and a fixed carbon content of 88.58%. Variations in adsorbent composition affected the quality of used cooking oil after purification, with the K50BE50 treatment demonstrating the best performance based on the lowest acid value and better saponification value, density, and flow rate than the other treatments. These findings indicate that a balanced composition of taro corm peel carbon and bleaching earth produced the most effective adsorption process. The combination of these two adsorbents has the potential to be developed as an effective, economical, and environmentally friendly biomass-based alternative adsorbent for improving the quality of used cooking oil.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is fundamental to English language learning because it supports effective communication across listening, speaking, reading, and writing; however, many junior high school students experience difficulties acquiring vocabulary because of limited exposure to authentic language use and the continued predominance of conventional instructional practices. This study aimed to examine the effect of the HelloTalk application on students’ vocabulary mastery and explore students’ and their teacher’s perceptions of its implementation in English language learning. A mixed-methods approach with a convergent parallel design was employed, involving 32 seventh-grade students and one English teacher at SMPN 1 Prambon. Quantitative data were collected through vocabulary pretests and posttests and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, whereas qualitative data were obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations and analysed through data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The findings showed that the students’ mean vocabulary score increased from 78.8 on the pretest to 92.3 on the posttest, demonstrating improved vocabulary mastery following the implementation of HelloTalk. The qualitative findings further revealed positive perceptions among the students and teacher, particularly regarding the application’s interactive features, ease of use, opportunities for authentic communication, and contribution to students’ motivation and confidence in learning English. The study concludes that HelloTalk can serve as an effective mobile-assisted language learning application for enhancing vocabulary mastery and facilitating more interactive, authentic, and learner-centred English instruction. These findings contribute empirical evidence regarding the pedagogical value of mobile-assisted language learning and provide practical implications for English teachers seeking to integrate communication-based digital applications into vocabulary instruction.

Abstract

The Timor deer (Rusa timorensis) is a herbivorous mammal that plays an important role in maintaining the balance of dry tropical forest ecosystems in Indonesia. However, its population on Lombok Island continues to face pressure from deforestation, habitat fragmentation and degradation, illegal hunting, and increasing human–wildlife conflict. Although various studies have addressed Timor deer conservation, the available research remains partial and has not produced a comprehensive synthesis as a basis for adaptive management. This study aims to synthesize developments in research on the conservation and management of Timor deer on Lombok Island through a scoping review approach. The review was conducted based on the PRISMA-ScR guidelines by searching the Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Google Scholar, Garuda, and Neliti databases. Of the 285 articles identified, 38 publications met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed qualitatively and descriptively using thematic analysis. The synthesis results show that research on Timor deer remains dominated by studies of habitat distribution, population dynamics, and in situ conservation, whereas collaborative governance, conservation policies, and community participation have received limited attention. The main threats to the sustainability of Timor deer populations include land-use conversion, habitat fragmentation, illegal hunting, declining forage quality, and weak management of conservation areas. Based on these findings, this study proposes the Integrated Adaptive Conservation Management (IACM) model, which integrates in situ and ex situ conservation, collaborative governance, and the use of conservation technology as an adaptive management strategy. This model provides a conceptual contribution to the development of wildlife management and may serve as a scientific basis for formulating evidence-based conservation policies to support the sustainability of Timor deer populations and biodiversity management on Lombok Island.

Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium that employs a quorum-sensing mechanism mediated by the LasR protein to regulate biofilm formation and virulence. This study aims to analyze the potential of bioactive compounds from Curcuma longa as inhibitors of the LasR protein through an in silico approach. The study employed a computational approach using molecular docking to predict interactions between the ligands and the LasR protein. The analysis was followed by the prediction of physicochemical properties based on Lipinski’s Rule of Five and the evaluation of pharmacokinetic and toxicity profiles using ADMET parameters. The molecular docking results showed that all compounds had negative docking scores ranging from −6.9297 to −9.5288 kcal/mol. Curcumin and demethoxycurcumin exhibited the strongest binding affinities, with docking scores of −9.5288 and −9.5189 kcal/mol, respectively. All compounds met the criteria of Lipinski’s Rule of Five and demonstrated reasonably favorable ADMET profiles, although a moderate potential for toxicity was identified based on the AMES mutagenicity and human hepatotoxicity parameters. This study concludes that the bioactive compounds of Curcuma longa, particularly curcumin and demethoxycurcumin, have the potential to be developed as candidate inhibitors of the LasR protein. These findings provide a computational basis for compound structure optimization and further research through in vitro and in vivo testing to validate their effectiveness and safety as LasR inhibitors.

Abstract

Although alumni hold a strategic position as partners of Islamic boarding schools in developing students’ human resources (HR), scholarly studies on the forms of their contributions and the impacts of their involvement remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the role of alumni in developing and improving the quality of students’ human resources at Pondok Pesantren Anwarul Huda Malang. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Informants were selected through purposive sampling and included the pesantren leader and administrators, alumni association administrators, alumni who actively contributed, and students. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which comprises data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that alumni play a significant role in improving the quality of students’ human resources through five main forms of contribution: organizing guidance and skills-training activities, serving as mentors and resource persons based on their professional experience, participating as teachers at Madrasah Diniyah, providing financial support and facilities for pesantren development, and enhancing students’ motivation, insights, and career networks. These contributions positively affect students’ knowledge, skills, self-confidence, and readiness to engage in community life and the world of work. This study affirms that alumni involvement and the presence of an active alumni organization are important elements in sustaining synergy between alumni and the pesantren and supporting the continuous development of students’ human resources.
