Abstract

Elementary school students’ understanding of Natural Sciences (IPA) concepts, particularly the water cycle, remains relatively low because of the abstract nature of the material and instruction dominated by textbook use. This condition indicates the need for instructional media capable of visualizing concepts concretely so that the material can be understood more easily. This study aims to analyze the effect of using water cycle diorama media on the understanding of IPA concepts among fifth-grade students at UPTD SD Negeri 3 Parepare. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental research design using a Pretest–Posttest Control Group Design. The research population comprised all 594 students at UPTD SD Negeri 3 Parepare, while the sample consisted of 58 students divided into an experimental class of 30 Grade V.1 students and a control class of 28 Grade V.2 students. Data were collected using a 20-item multiple-choice test administered before (pretest) and after (posttest) the treatment and were subsequently analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that the experimental class obtained a mean conceptual understanding score of 83.33, which was higher than the control class mean score of 66.79. The independent-samples t-test yielded a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05. These findings indicate that the use of water cycle diorama media had a significant effect on the understanding of IPA concepts among fifth-grade students at UPTD SD Negeri 3 Parepare. This study provides the practical implication that diorama media can be used as an alternative concrete instructional medium to help students visualize and understand the water cycle concept in elementary school IPA learning.

Abstract

Student character formation requires an approach that not only emphasizes the understanding of values but also integrates spiritual experiences, reflection, and habituation into school life. This study aimed to analyze the contribution of spiritual activities to student character formation at SMK Negeri Ndora and to develop an integrative character formation model based on six spiritual activities. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving a Catholic Religious Education teacher, the vice principal for student affairs, and eleventh-grade students. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which comprises data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results showed that character formation occurred through the integration of six spiritual activities, namely reading Scripture, prayer, Scripture sharing, fasting or matiraga, Eucharistic celebrations, and retreats or recollections. Each activity had a distinct yet complementary pedagogical mechanism. Reading Scripture fostered moral awareness; prayer strengthened discipline, self-regulation, spirituality, and emotional management; Scripture sharing developed empathy and communication skills through reflective dialogue; fasting fostered self-control and social concern; Eucharistic celebrations strengthened the internalization of values through liturgical reflection; while retreats or recollections consolidated spiritual experiences into a moral identity manifested in everyday behavior. This study produced an Integrative Character Formation Model Based on Six Spiritual Activities comprising three stages, namely value internalization, social transformation, and moral identity consolidation. The model contributes theoretically to the development of character education and can serve as an alternative for implementing spirituality-based character education in school settings.

Abstract

Digital teaching materials have been widely developed for chemistry education, but studies specifically analyzing the need to develop electronic student worksheets (E-LKM) based on Guided Inquiry Learning (GIL) and integrated with Augmented Reality for chemical bonding remain limited. This study aims to analyze the need to develop GIL-based E-LKM integrated with Augmented Reality for Phase F chemical bonding at SMA Negeri 6 Padang. The study employed a quantitative approach with a survey design involving three chemistry teachers and 70 Phase F Grade XI students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through structured interviews and a needs analysis questionnaire and were subsequently analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of percentages. The findings indicate that chemistry instruction remains dominated by lecture methods and the use of conventional teaching materials. A total of 60% of the students experienced difficulty understanding chemistry content, 65% stated that chemical bonding was difficult to understand, 68.6% considered the teaching materials used to be less engaging, 57.1% had never used E-LKM, and 82.9% had never used teaching materials that visualized concepts through images, text, or three-dimensional models. These findings indicate a need to develop GIL-based E-LKM integrated with Augmented Reality to facilitate more active and engaging learning and assist students in visualizing abstract concepts in chemical bonding. This study provides an empirical basis for developing digital teaching materials that address the needs of teachers and students in Phase F chemistry instruction.

Abstract

The utilization of mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) skin as a raw material for gelatin is an effort to enhance the value of fishery by-products through an extraction method based on natural materials. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of gelatin from mahi-mahi skin produced through pretreatment using kandis acid and extraction with an ultrasonic bath. Gelatin characterization was conducted based on yield, physicochemical parameters, and functional group identification using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the resulting gelatin had a yield of 13.60%, moisture content of 6.59%, ash content of 1.02%, fat content of 1.80%, pH of 6.98, viscosity of 2.15 cP, melting point of 21 °C, and gel point of 3 °C. FTIR analysis identified the absorption bands of amides A, I, II, and III at wavenumbers of 3282, 1633, 1528, and 1241 cm⁻¹, respectively. These findings indicate that mahi-mahi skin has the potential to be utilized as an alternative source of gelatin with physicochemical characteristics and functional groups that support the development of materials derived from fishery by-products. The use of kandis acid and ultrasonic extraction also has implications for the development of gelatin production methods that utilize natural materials and are more environmentally friendly.

Abstract

Methylene blue is a cationic dye that has the potential to contaminate aquatic environments and therefore requires an effective treatment method, one of which is adsorption. This study aimed to analyze the adsorption isotherm characteristics of methylene blue on EDA/Cu-modified silica xerogel and determine the most appropriate isotherm model. The study was conducted experimentally by varying the initial methylene blue concentration from 400 to 1,100 mg/L under optimum adsorption conditions. The adsorption equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models through a linear regression approach. The results showed that the Langmuir model exhibited a higher goodness of fit, with an R² value of 0.9967, than the Freundlich model, which obtained an R² value of 0.5763. Analysis using the Langmuir model yielded a maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 235.63 mg/g and a Langmuir constant (KL) of 0.201 L/mg, whereas the Freundlich model yielded a Kf constant of 109.3 and an n value of 6.44. These findings indicate that the adsorption of methylene blue on EDA/Cu-modified silica xerogel is better described by the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating the formation of a monolayer on the relatively homogeneous adsorbent surface. This study strengthens the understanding of the equilibrium adsorption mechanism of dyes on modified silica materials and demonstrates the potential of EDA/Cu-modified silica xerogel as an adsorbent for treating dye-containing wastewater.

Abstract

The National Curriculum encourages the use of digital technology to facilitate active, interactive, and student-centered learning. However, hydrocarbon instruction remains dominated by the use of printed worksheets and therefore does not fully support students’ active engagement. This study aims to develop Guided Inquiry Learning-oriented electronic student worksheets (E-LKM) assisted by Liveworksheets for hydrocarbon topics for Phase F senior high school students and to examine the validity of the resulting product. The study employed the Plomp development model, comprising the preliminary research and prototyping phases. The development process was limited to the third prototype stage, which included self-evaluation, expert review, and one-to-one evaluation. Product validation involved three lecturers from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Padang, and two chemistry teachers from SMA Negeri 4 Payakumbuh, while the one-to-one evaluation involved three students with different levels of academic ability. Data were collected through interview guidelines, a needs analysis questionnaire, validation sheets, and a student response questionnaire and were subsequently analyzed using Aiken’s V index and descriptive analysis. The findings showed that the E-LKM obtained an average Aiken’s V value of 0.89, which was categorized as valid. The one-to-one evaluation results also showed that the E-LKM was easy to use, had an attractive visual appearance, and received positive responses from students. Thus, the Guided Inquiry Learning-oriented E-LKM assisted by Liveworksheets for hydrocarbon topics met the validity criteria and demonstrated initial practicality, making it suitable for use as an alternative digital learning medium in chemistry instruction.

Abstract

Fern diversity (Pteridophyta) is an important component in maintaining ecosystem balance, but information regarding its presence and morphological characteristics in Kebun Ratu, Jombang Regency, remains limited. This study aimed to identify fern species in the Kebun Ratu area and describe the morphological characteristics of each species as a basis for providing scientific information to support conservation and the development of learning media based on local potential. The study employed a qualitative approach with an exploratory descriptive design through a field survey. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which comprises data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results identified three fern species, namely Nephrolepis sp., Adiantum caudatum, and Pteris sp. The three species exhibited differences in morphological characteristics in terms of leaf shape, stem type, and sorus arrangement and were found in moist, shaded habitats near watercourses. These findings indicate that Kebun Ratu has potential as a fern habitat, although the number of identified species was relatively limited. This study contributes local flora inventory data that can be used as a basis for conservation, the preparation of educational herbaria, and the development of environmentally based biology learning media.

Abstract

The technological utilization gap continues to limit the efficiency and consistency of baking processes in culinary micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This community service program aims to design, implement, and evaluate a smart oven as an appropriate technology for a culinary MSME partner in Malang City, which was purposively selected because it still used a conventional oven. The program implementation included surveys, interviews, problem analysis, training, equipment development, handover, operational assistance, and monitoring. Data were obtained through observation, technical testing, interviews, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed descriptively and comparatively based on temperature stability, baking time, energy consumption, and product success rate. The implementation results showed that the smart oven was able to maintain temperature stability through automatic set-point and time controls, increase baking efficiency by 15–20%, reduce energy consumption by up to 12%, and achieve a product success rate of 98%. These findings indicate that the application of an automatic control system accompanied by operational assistance can improve production process standardization, reduce baking failures, and maintain consistent product quality. This program contributes to providing a replicable model for implementing appropriate technology to strengthen the productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness of local culinary MSMEs.

Abstract

The limitations of static learning media still make it difficult for elementary school students to understand the concept of chlorophyll and the process of light interaction that causes leaves to appear green. This study aimed to design and develop an educational Augmented Reality Book entitled “Klorofil sebagai Penyebab Warna pada Daun,” which integrates an illustrated book, three-dimensional animation, and a marker-based tracking system. The study employed a research and development approach using the Multimedia Development Life Cycle model, which includes the concept, design, material collecting, assembly, and testing stages. Initial data were obtained through a questionnaire administered to 30 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique, as well as a literature review. The data were analyzed descriptively through frequencies, percentages, and the categorization of open-ended responses. The results of the study produced an illustrated book consisting of five spreads, low-poly-style three-dimensional models, and an Android-based application developed using Unity and Vuforia. The testing results showed that the augmented reality camera function, marker detection, the appearance of three-dimensional objects, animation, and the exit button operated according to the design. These findings indicate that the integration of print media and augmented reality technology can support the visualization of scientific concepts in a more interactive manner. This study contributes to the development of science learning media that connect printed narratives with digital scientific visualization. Further testing with fifth-grade students is needed to assess the effect of the media on understanding, interest, and learning outcomes.
