Abstract

The presence of Islamist activism in Ngargoyoso encourages the role of places of worship from places of voice of harmony to mouthpieces of intolerance. Sekar Ayu's interfaith women community counters the intolerant narrative. How did Sekar Ayu proclaim peace in Ngargoyoso? The purpose of this study is to determine the role of Sekar Ayu in building peace in Ngargoyoso. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with a sociology of religion approach. Data collection was through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Its data analysis uses interactive analysis models including data reduction, data delivery, and conclusions. Sekar Ayu's interfaith women community as a social movement of Ngargoyoso civil society is actively developing a culture of peace. First, Sekar Ayu actively builds communication and dialogue between religious groups and advocates for humanitarian and religious issues at the lower community level based on places of worship. Second, Sekar Ayu became a space for interfaith community encounters with various activities such as places of worship and family gatherings in it with discussions about religious, social, and cultural issues as a form of life dialogue. Third, Sekar Ayu empowers interfaith women to build a mutually beneficial life between religious groups. Fourth, Sekar Ayu's activities are expected to be a dialogue of sustainable life by emphasizing an inclusive, pluralist perspective, by promoting religion as a social ethic.

Abstract

This paper aims to find out a conceptual approach to the social safety net in the Qur’an and some essential values that can be realized as role models in contemporary modern life. This study investigates several significant questions, such as how the Qur'an argues for taking sides with the disadvantaged people, and what instruments are outlined by the Qur'an as the main support for the implementation of social safety nets. These questions are approached contextually and critically by examining primary texts, such as verses of the Qur'an that talk about the topic, to be interpreted thematically-contextually. Meanwhile, secondary texts are used as interpretive supports to enrich perspectives in reconstructing and reformulating the idea of a social safety net based on the Qur'anic values. This study concludes; first, even though the Qur’an does not mention explicitly the term social safety net, the teachings of the social safety net are implicitly embodied in the Qur’an. Second, some fundamental instruments in the Qur’an can be realized as supporting systems for social safety nets, such as zakah, kafarat, infaq, sadaqah, qurban, dam and fidyah, fai’, and ghanimah. Third, the Qur’anic concept of social safety net engages with five principles, namely expanse and balance, justice and equity, spirituality and productivity, sustainability and empowerment, and dynamic and systematic. Thus, the concept of the social safety net in the Qur’an is a comprehensive approach, not only for the short term but also for the long term, not only consumptive-giving but also productive-empowering.

Abstract

Gemohing is a local culture of the Lamaholot people. Gemohing has had a significant impact on the attainment of the ideals of mainstreaming religious moderation in Indonesia. This study aimed at exploring the expression of gemohing as the foundation and pillar of religious moderation for the people of East Flores. This study is qualitative, built upon primary and secondary data. The primary data were collected from observations on community participation. While the materials were directly gathered from the gemohing practice and interviews with 23 cultural figures and residents of the gemohing tradition. Secondary data were obtained from relevant preceding studies and two documentary films about the practice of gemohing. Both types of data were analyzed qualitatively-interpretatively. This study was conducted from September 2019 to July 2022 in the Larantuka, Adonara, and Solor. This study found that the Lamaholot community demonstrated gemohing as the foundation and pillar of building a shared life. The gemohing praxis which is based on the Lamaholot philosophy is reflected in the principles of ina tou ama ehang and puin taan tou gahan taan ehan. These principles mean that all Lamaholot people come from one mother and father and therefore the spirit of unity must be upheld. They mandate that every citizen views each other as brothers that need to be appreciated and respected with a spirit of unity in the social order and as an individual as well. From this point of view, unity and oneness are highly emphasized aspects. This study represents a contribution to efforts to promote religious moderation.

Abstract

Disease prevention is almost always done with a modern approach through medical science or other public health sciences. This approach is the primary reference in mitigating the spread of the disease. In fact, in Indonesian society, there are local wisdoms in the traditions of each ethnic group in tackling the spread of disease, for example, the Javanese tradition. Javanese culture has local wisdom in dealing with pandemics passed down from generation to generation. This study attempts to answer how the mitigation pattern in Javanese culture is. Anthropologically, pandemics can be studied under health anthropology on disease. By taking the case of the Javanese people in Indonesia, this article describes local ways of preventing and overcoming disease outbreaks or mitigating disease outbreaks. The data source of this article is produced from qualitative research through interview techniques, focus group discussions, online seminars, and the study of manuscripts from magazines published in Java. The results showed that local communities, in addition to knowing the causes of disease, also developed ways to prevent and eliminate diseases, and mitigate outbreaks and pandemics. Javanese people see the mitigation of diseases physically and psychically. Physical mitigation tends to be in line with modern medical methods and the application of new normal. The mitigation of psychics is done by using mantras and songs and developing Javanese attitude of “narima ing pandum”  (take it as it comes).

Abstract

This study is prompted by criticism to the educational activities undertaken by Islamic educational institutions for adopting Western educational axiology. On the contrary, as a reputable school, Pesantren Al-Maqbul refuses to make transformation into a modern one, and still preserves the traditional education system. This study aims to explore the reasons Pesantren Al-Maqbul maintains the traditional education system with perspective of educational axiology. This study answers the research qustions about what are the ethical and aesthetic values at the Pesantren Al-Maqbul?, and what are the education purposes at the Pesantren Al-Maqbul?. This study uses a qualitative approach that seeks to describe data from the field and literature related to the axiology of traditional pesantren education. Observation, interview and documentation techniques were used to obtain data related to the discussion, which were then analyzed. This research resulted in findings, namely: (1) The reasons for the Pesantren Al-Maqbul to maintain the traditional education system cannot be separated from the axiological construction of its education; (2) The influence of the axiological basis of education can be identified from the tendency of normative values, namely being bound by Islamic provisions in the aesthetics of education at Pesantren Al-Maqbul; (3) The tendency of akhlāq at-Ṭā'ah (obedience ethics) and akhlāq al-Fanā' (illuminative ethics) is found in educational ethics at Pesantren Al-Maqbul; (4) The aim of education at the Pesantren Al-Maqbul is to study Islamic religious knowledge (tafaqquh fi al-din). There is no space for general knowledge (science) to be studied at the Pesantren Al-Maqbul.

Abstract

This article discusses the process of paradigm shift of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)’s national politics orientation. Considering Thomas S. Kuhn's paradigm shift concept, particularly the revolutionary stages, there was a separation of the national political transformation period in NU. A paradigm shift which opens awareness in understanding the science does only happens in established objectivity. The product of ijtihad, due to the deposition of knowledge, always has natural subjectivity with what they believe as the truth. Thus, innovative movements in finding alternative linear formulations that can always form dialogue with the times must always be carried out. Through literary work, this article illustrates that demarcation boundaries of the occurrence of NU's national political shift characterized by the pre-normal phase, normal phase, anomaly-crisis phase, and new-normal phase. Utilizing Kuhn’s perspective as tool of analysis, this study finds out that there are a few stages of paradigm shift experienced by NU. NU's struggles marked the pre-normal phase as an embryo before finally becoming an organization. The birth and development of NU marked the intermediate phase as a socio-political-religious organization on the track of the struggle. The anomaly-crisis phase occurred when NU metamorphosed into a political party, involved in interests, and strayed from its goals. The new-normal phase was marked by NU's return to Khittah in 1926, which meant returning to a social-religious-based organization. NU has returned to the struggle to fill and maintain independence through national politics in this phase.

Abstract

The multicultural Indonesian nation consisting of various tribes, languages, ethnicities, cultures, and religions must uphold tolerance education. including the implementation of the "Kurikulum Merdeka" in educational units in schools. Various cases of religious intolerance show a lack of voluntary action through an understanding of the treatment of volunteerism for social purposes through love (philanthropy) in the form of acts of generosity (compassion). This paper discusses the Philanthropy of Religious Tolerance Education in the Implementation of the "Kurikulum Merdeka" at Al-Kautsar Elementary School and Pangudi Utami Elementary School. This research qualitative field research with a data collection approach through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques in this study are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study show that philanthropy is always closely related to things that are engaged in charity or are closely related to material elements. This narrow view is currently beginning to erode, especially with the increasing interest of school students in philanthropic activities which are closely related to the behavior of those who do them out of concern. The meaning of philanthropy is expanding and developing. Philanthropic activities are increasingly organized and directed. During modern currents, forms of philanthropy emerge in society, one of which is philanthropy in implementing “Kurikulum Merdeka” with two different schools with students from Pangudi Utami Catholic Elementary School and Al Kautsar Islamic Elementary School.
