Abstract

The development of superior cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) varieties requires the identification of distinctive morphological characteristics and superior agronomic performance to support cultivar selection and release. This study aimed to identify the morphological characteristics and evaluate the agronomic superiority of four candidate F1 hybrid cucumber varieties for fresh consumption compared with one commercial check variety. The experiment was conducted from February to May 2026 at PT. Tani Murni Jogja using a non-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with five treatments and four replications. Morphological traits were evaluated descriptively according to the Distinctness, Uniformity, and Stability (DUS) testing guidelines, whereas agronomic traits were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the 5% Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test. The results revealed morphological variation in leaf orientation, young fruit spine density, fruit base shape, and fruit tip shape, while the remaining traits were relatively uniform among the tested genotypes. Variety significantly affected most agronomic traits, including stem length, stem diameter, leaf length, leaf width, flowering age, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, number of fruits per plant, and fruit weight. Among the tested genotypes, TL-03 and TL-04 exhibited the most balanced agronomic performance and are considered the most promising candidates for further evaluation and development as superior fresh-market cucumber varieties. Keywords: Cucumber, morphological characterization, agronomic traits, F1 hybrid, superior variety

Abstract

Corn sticks are value-added corn products that can be manufactured using readily available ingredients and simple processing equipment. They are generally produced using wheat flour, although Indonesia remains dependent on imported wheat. Modified cassava flour (Mocaf) is a potential local ingredient that can partially replace wheat flour. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of mocaf substitution on the physicochemical properties of corn sticks. A completely randomized design with one factor, namely the proportion of mocaf and wheat flour, was applied. Three formulations were evaluated: F1 containing wheat flour only, F2 containing mocaf and wheat flour at a ratio of 1:1, and F3 at a ratio of 1:2. Increasing the proportion of mocaf tended to increase fat content, energy value, and oil absorption capacity, while decreasing protein content.

Abstract

Soil degradation in tropical agroecosystems is a critical issue that directly impacts agricultural productivity, ecosystem stability, and environmental sustainability. In recent years, interest in biological soil restoration approaches has grown significantly, as they are considered more effective in supporting sustainable soil management compared to conventional approaches reliant on chemical inputs. This study aims to examine the development of research on the restoration of degraded soils in tropical agricultural systems, identify dominant trends in findings, and identify research gaps in the available scientific literature. The review was conducted using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines as the basis for the literature selection and analysis process. Article searches were conducted through the Scopus, Web of Science, Dimensions, and Google Scholar databases, covering publications from 2017 to 2024. The selection process was conducted systematically, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in 42 scientific articles suitable for further analysis. The synthesis results indicate that research on tropical soil restoration largely focuses on the use of biochar, soil microorganisms, carbon dynamics, and an integrative approach that combines biochar, microbes, and plants. In addition, recent research developments indicate a paradigm shift toward a more adaptive, holistic, and multidisciplinary approach to biological restoration. This study is expected to enhance the conceptual understanding of biologically based tropical soil restoration, serving as a foundation for the development of further research on more sustainable agroecosystem restoration strategies.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of different planting media compositions on the growth and yield of edamame (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) cultivated in polybags and to determine the optimal media composition. The research was conducted from January to April 2025 at the Kartini Experimental Garden, Faculty of Agriculture and Business, Satya Wacana Christian University (UKSW), Salatiga, using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with seven treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of soil alone, soil combined with rice husk charcoal, cocopeat, compost, and their combinations. Observed parameters included plant growth, yield components, protein content, and production cost efficiency. The results showed that planting media composition significantly affected the number of leaves, branches, stem diameter, number of pods, pod weight, seed weight, and shoot weight, but had no significant effect on plant height, root weight, 100-seed weight, and protein content. The combination of soil, rice husk charcoal, and compost produced the best results, with the highest pod number and pod weight. This treatment also showed better production cost efficiency compared to cocopeat-based media. Therefore, the combination of soil, rice husk charcoal, and compost is recommended as an optimal planting medium for edamame cultivation in polybags

Abstract

Long beans (Vigna unguiculata var. sesquipedalis) require superior strain development to support increased productivity. This research aims to identify the morphological diversity of the F4 generation long bean strain and determine the potential strain for further selection. The study used the individual observation method without repetition to evaluate the phenotypic segregation in three strains F4 (G1 = Strain 1, G2 = Strain 2, and G3 = Strain 3) with the Parama and Pertiwi varieties as comparisons. A total of 19 morphological characters were observed in 231 individuals of long bean plants of the F4 generation. Each plant is treated as an individual selection, analyzed using Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) with the UPGMA method. The main distinguishing characters between clusters include the coloring of anthocyanin pods, the color of the old pods, the color and pattern of the seeds, the color of the seeds in the hilum circle, and the color of the flower petals. G2, G3 strains, and most of the G1 strains are recommended as further selection materials based on the suitability of the observed phenotype character. Meanwhile, G1.8, G1.9, G1.12, G1.52, G1.74 and G1.79. have the potential to be used as cross elders because they show differences in morphological characteristics that can support the formation of diversity in the segregan generation. Keywords: Morphological Diversity, Cluster Analysis, Dendrogram, F4 Generation, Advanced Selection

Abstract

The transformation of the oil palm industry toward more efficient production systems has accelerated the implementation of mechanization in plantation operations. The success of mechanization adoption is determined not only by the availability of technology but also by the readiness of human resources to accept and utilize such technology. This study aims to analyze the level of technology readiness for intensive mechanization implementation in on-farm operations within PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV (PalmCo). A quantitative descriptive approach was employed using the Technology Readiness Index (TRI), which consists of four dimensions: optimism, innovativeness, discomfort, and insecurity. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to respondents from six PalmCo estates representing Regions I, II, and III. The study covered mechanization in land preparation and planting, fertilization, maintenance and weed control, harvesting, and transportation activities. Data were analyzed by calculating the technology readiness index and classifying the results into low, medium, and high technology readiness categories. The results showed that mechanization in land preparation and fertilization achieved TRI values of 3.437 and 2.966, respectively, indicating Medium Technology Readiness. In contrast, weed control and harvesting-transportation activities recorded TRI values of 2.866 and 2.804, respectively, indicating Low Technology Readiness. Optimism was identified as the most influential dimension contributing to technology readiness across all mechanization activities. The lower readiness levels were mainly associated with plantation topography, limited supporting infrastructure, and the absence of fully integrated mechanization implementation. These findings provide valuable insights for PalmCo in developing more effective mechanization strategies tailored to the operational characteristics of oil palm plantations.
