Abstract

This study examines the effect of doses of cattle blood liquid organic fertilizer and ZA fertilizer on the growth and yield of edamame plants (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). The study was conducted at the Soropadan Agricultural Training Center from May to August 2022. The study utilized a factorial experiment (4 x 2) arranged in a complete randomized block design with 2 factors and 3 replications. The first factor involved varying dosages of POC, with four levels: 0, 200, 400, and 600 ml per plot. The second factor was the application of ZA fertilizer at two levels: 0 kg/ha and 75 kg/ha. The results of this study showed that the application of cattle blood liquid organic fertilizer with doses of 600 ml/plot still improved the yield in parameter such as the number of filled pods per plant, weight of filled pods per plant, weight of dry seeds per plant, weight of dry seeds per m2, and weight of 100 dry seeds. The optimum result for the parameter of weight of filled pods per m2 was achieved at a dose of cattle blood liquid organic fertilizer of 434,44 ml/plot and for the parameter of protein content was achieved at a dose of 350 ml/plot. The dose of ZA fertilizer at 75 kg/ha yielded higher results for the number of filled pods per plant, weight of filled pods per plant, weight of dry seeds per plant, and weight of 100 dry seeds. The application of a dose of cattle blood liquid organic fertilizer of 352,50 ml/plot and ZA fertilizer at 75 kg/ha provided the highest yield in the number of filled pods per plant.

Abstract

Limited availability of fertile land has led to the adoption of a polybag cultivation system for edamame soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), in which plant growth is influenced by the volume of growing medium. This study aimed to examine the effect of varying growing medium volumes on the growth and yield of the Biomax 1 edamame variety and to determine the optimal growing medium volume. The study was conducted from August to October 2025 at the Kartini Farm using a non-factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with five growing medium volume treatments—4 L, 6 L, 8 L, 10 L, and 12 L—each replicated five times. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at the 5% significance level, followed by the Honest Significant Differences (HSD) test. The results showed that growing medium volume had a significant effect on most growth and yield parameters, except for plant height and seed protein content. A growing medium volume of 12 L yielded the best results and is recommended to increase edamame productivity in the polybag cultivation system.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of liquid organic fertilizer derived from tomato waste and leucaena leaves on the growth and yield of pakcoy plants. The study was conducted for 35 days at Jl. Perjuangan Unmul, Sempaja Selatan, Samarinda Utara, Samarinda City, East Kalimantan Province. This research employed a true experimental design using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of four treatments: K0 (control), P0 (20%), P1 (40%), and P2 (60%), with six replications. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance. The results showed that the plant height of pakcoy at 14 days after planting (DAP) was identical across all treatments, measuring 4 cm; therefore, it was not subjected to statistical analysis. Similarly, the number of leaves at 14 DAP was relatively uniform, with an average of five leaves per plant. At 21, 28, and 35 DAP, the analysis of variance indicated that the treatments had a significant effect on plant height, with calculated F values of 30.82, 32.44, and 25.33, respectively, which exceeded the critical F value (3.10). The treatments also had a significant effect on the number of leaves at 21, 28, and 35 DAP, with calculated F values of 10.00, 27.35, and 21.28, respectively. In addition, a significant effect was observed on fresh weight at harvest, with a calculated F value of 133.66, which exceeded the critical F value (3.10). These findings indicate that the P1 treatment (40%) was the most effective concentration in enhancing the growth of pakcoy plants compared to the other treatments.

Abstract

The utilization of taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) as a local food source remains suboptimal, particularly with regard to its leaves, despite their good nutritional potential. This study aims to analyze the agro-morphological characteristics, crystal density, and calcium oxalate content in 12 accessions of taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) from Magelang City and Regency. This analysis needs to be carried out to optimize the use of taro plants as a source of nutrition and functional food that is safe and benefical for human health. The type of accession had a highly significant effect on leaf length, leaf width, and plant height. All accessions have raphide shaped calcium oxalate crystals. The highest crystal density was found in the Bogor Taro accession from Windusari and the Bogor Taro accession from Pakis, with an average of 52.04 crystals/cm², while the lowest crystal density was recorded in the Pratama 1 accession from Secang and the Black Taro accession from Bandongan, with an average of 27.15 crystals/cm². The Bogor Taro accession from Grabag had the highest crystal content at 3.15%, whereas the Black Taro accession from Bandongan had the lowest at 0.45%. Accessions (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) with lower calcium oxalate content have greater potential for development as functional food ingredients that are safer for consumption. Keywords: Colocasia esculenta, agro-morphological characteristics, calcium oxalate, crystal density, food safety

Abstract

Bitter gourd seeds (Momordica charantia L.) have a relatively hard seed coat that may restrict water absorption and delay germination, thus requiring an appropriate scarification treatment. Manual scarification using nail clippers is relatively effective; however, it is labor-intensive and time-consuming when applied to large quantities of seeds. This study aimed to analyze the performance of a prototype scarification machine driven by a transmission motor compared with manual scarification using nail clippers. The performance of the machine prototype was evaluated based on scarification effectiveness, working capacity, and time efficiency. In addition, germination tests were conducted on the scarified seeds. The performance test was carried out in four replications using 100 seeds per replication, while the germination test was conducted in four replications using 25 seeds per replication. The data were analyzed using a t-test at a 5% significance level. The machine prototype achieved an average scarification effectiveness of 38.50%, which was lower than that of the manual method at 87.75%. However, the prototype had ahigher working capacity of 20.79 seeds min?1 compared with 13.01 seeds min?1 for the manual method. The processing time required by the prototype was 4 min 51 s, which was shorter than the 7 min 43 s required by the manual method, resulting in a 37% improvement in processing-time efficiency. The germination test showed germination percentages of 65% for seeds treated using the machine prototype and 75% for seeds treated manually. The t-test indicated that the difference was not statistically significant, with a p-value of 0.176. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the motor-driven scarification machine prototype can increase working capacity and processing- time efficiency. Nevertheless, improvements to the hopper system, drive motor, and piercing-needle mechanism are required to enhance its scarification effectiveness.

Abstract

White jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.) is a promising underutilized legume with potential applications as an alternative food crop and genetic resource for crop improvement. However, information on the morpho-agronomic performance of local accessions remains limited. This study evaluated morpho-agronomic variation among four local white jack bean accessions and identified accessions with desirable traits for preliminary selection. The experiment was conducted from November 2025 to March 2026 at the Teaching Factory Garden of Politeknik Pembangunan Pertanian Yogyakarta–Magelang, Indonesia. A randomized complete block design was used, comprising four accessions, namely FBKR-1060, FBKR-1062, FBKR-1064, and FBKR-631, with six replications. Quantitative traits included leaf length, leaf width, plant height, days to flowering, days to harvest, pod length, pod width, and seed diameter. Qualitative traits comprised growth habit, leaf apex shape, leaf base shape, pod shape, and seed color. Quantitative data were subjected to analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s honestly significant difference test at the 5% significance level. Significant accession effects were observed for days to flowering, days to harvest, pod length, pod width, and seed diameter. FBKR-1060 and FBKR-631 flowered and reached harvest earlier than FBKR-1062 and FBKR-1064. FBKR-1064 and FBKR-631 produced the longest pods and largest seed diameters, while FBKR-631 had the widest pods. All accessions exhibited a determinate growth habit, pointed leaf apex, obtuse leaf base, slightly curved pods, and white seeds. These findings indicate that quantitative traits are more informative than the observed qualitative descriptors for differentiating the evaluated accessions. FBKR-631 is a promising accession for further multi-environment and yield evaluations because it combines earliness with relatively large pod and seed dimensions. Keywords: accession; Canavalia ensiformis; earliness; morpho-agronomic traits; preliminary selection
