Abstract

The increasing dominance of English as the global lingua franca in tourism underscores the necessity for specialized vocabulary tailored to this sector. This study addresses a critical gap in English for Tourism (EfT) resources by developing specialized vocabulary lists using a corpus-based approach. Traditional EfT resources often fail to meet the nuanced, context-specific demands of real-world tourism communication, creating challenges for both learners and professionals. To bridge this gap, a representative corpus of tourism-related texts was compiled, and corpus analysis was conducted using three key techniques: frequency analysis, keyness analysis, and collocation analysis. These methods enabled the identification of key vocabulary and phrases relevant to various subfields within tourism, including hospitality, cultural heritage, and travel services. The identified vocabulary was subsequently categorized into thematic areas to ensure its practical applicability for tourism professionals. The study also evaluated the effectiveness of these vocabulary lists in educational contexts through pre-tests and post-tests administered to students and instructors in EfT programs. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in vocabulary proficiency, with an average 25% increase in students' performance following the intervention. These findings contribute valuable, empirically grounded resources for EfT educators, offering a practical means to enhance language proficiency and professional communication. This study highlights the importance of using authentic, context-specific materials in language education, ensuring that learners acquire the necessary skills for effective communication in tourism-related settings.

Abstract

The Hallo application, a mobile platform designed to enhance speaking skills by enabling users to connect with English speakers worldwide, has recently garnered significant attention among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners. This study aimed to explore EFL students' perceptions of using the Hallo application to improve their speaking performance. The research involved 15 participants from the Foreign Language Academy at Universitas Muslim Indonesia, all of whom were EFL students. A qualitative research approach was adopted, utilizing questionnaires and interviews as the primary data collection methods. The findings indicate that the students generally perceive the Hallo application as an effective tool for improving their speaking, listening, vocabulary, and pronunciation skills. They reported that the platform creates a relaxed, pressure-free environment that fosters language learning, which may contribute to greater engagement and motivation. However, the study also revealed several challenges, including the presence of excessive advertisements and encounters with inappropriate users, which could potentially hinder the overall learning experience. Based on the findings, the EFL students demonstrated a positive attitude toward the Hallo application and recognized its potential for enhancing their English-speaking performance. These results suggest that mobile applications like Hallo could be valuable tools for language learning, particularly in fostering communication practice in authentic contexts. For future research, it would be useful to explore how the integration of such applications can be further optimized to minimize user-related challenges, such as inappropriate interactions and disruptive advertisements. Additionally, investigating the long-term impact of using the Hallo application on speaking proficiency would provide more insights into its effectiveness and potential improvements.

Abstract

The integration of digital tools in academic writing has significantly enhanced students' writing proficiency across various educational levels. Tools such as grammar checkers, citation managers, plagiarism detectors, and collaborative platforms help students produce more structured, academically compliant writing. These tools support technical skill development while also increasing educational accessibility, providing students from diverse backgrounds with greater opportunities to improve their writing abilities. AI-based writing assistants, in particular, help reduce grammatical errors and expand vocabulary, while multimodal technologies encourage creativity by enabling students to integrate visual and audio elements into their work. This literature review, using PRISMA and bibliometric analysis, synthesizes studies from 2019 to 2024, examining how digital tools impact writing clarity, adherence to academic standards, and structured argumentation. The review reveals that while digital tools significantly enhance writing skills, their overuse can result in a dependency that impairs the development of critical thinking and creativity—key components of strong writing. The implications of these findings stress the importance of digital literacy training within curricula, ensuring that students use digital tools responsibly and complement their writing skills with analytical and creative thinking. Additionally, professional development for educators is essential, enabling them to guide students in effectively integrating these tools. Ultimately, a balanced approach to digital tool use can enhance academic writing while contributing to the broader goal of fostering well-rounded, digitally literate learners.

Abstract

The integration of digital literacy into educational practices has garnered significant attention in recent years, particularly in the context of language learning. Digital literacy refers to the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate, and create information using various digital technologies. Given its growing importance, this study sought to evaluate the impact of digital literacy competence on improving English language skills through blended learning in the Independent Campus Program at Ichsan Sidenreng Rappang University. Employing a quantitative experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design, the study gathered data through English language tests and questionnaires. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ English skills, with the pretest average score of 31.7 rising to 84.7 in the posttest. The Paired Sample t-test confirmed the statistical significance of this difference (p-value = 0.000). Additionally, the Pearson correlation test revealed a moderate positive relationship between digital literacy and English proficiency (r = 0.456), indicating that students with higher digital literacy competencies tended to perform better in English. These findings underscore the significant role that digital literacy plays in enhancing language skills, particularly when integrated with technology-based learning approaches. For future research, further studies could explore the long-term impact of digital literacy on language acquisition, the effectiveness of various digital tools in language learning, and how digital literacy interacts with other factors, such as motivation and learning styles, to influence language proficiency. Additionally, expanding the research to include diverse educational settings and student populations could provide a broader understanding of digital literacy’s role in language education.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of blended learning in enhancing English communication skills among environmental health students, focusing on oral and written competencies essential in professional contexts. The research addresses a significant gap in language education for students in specialized fields, where limited engagement and practical application opportunities in traditional settings often hinder language proficiency development. A quasi-experimental design was employed with 60 students, divided into an experimental group receiving blended learning instruction and a control group following conventional face-to-face methods. Pre- and post-test results revealed that the experimental group demonstrated a 35% improvement in overall communication skills, compared to a 10% increase in the control group. Key gains in fluency, pronunciation, sentence structure, and vocabulary usage were observed. Data from student surveys and instructor observations also indicated higher levels of motivation, engagement, and confidence in the experimental group, attributed to the blended learning model’s flexibility, multimedia resources, and immediate feedback. This study highlights the significant advantages of blended learning for language acquisition in specialized academic fields and recommends its integration into language curricula. Tailored online resources and instructor training are proposed to maximize instructional impact. By addressing the language proficiency challenges in professional education, this research offers valuable insights into effective language learning strategies and supports adopting blended learning in diverse academic disciplines.

Abstract

As a prominent medium within the realm of literary works, film serves as a popular medium with a strong influence on public perceptions of various phenomena and issues, particularly as media act as conduits for societal control in the modern era. This study aims to explore the representation of women's bodies in the film Imperfect by Ernest Prakasa through the lens of Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminist theory. The research focuses on two main aspects: societal beauty standards for women's bodies and the female protagonist's resistance to these standards. Imperfect portrays the social pressures women face to conform to narrow, patriarchal standards of beauty, such as a slim figure and fair skin. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques including observation and note-taking. Observation is conducted through attentive viewing of the film, while note-taking involves documenting relevant dialogues and scenes. Data analysis is carried out systematically in several stages: transcribing key scenes, identifying and classifying scenes that reflect beauty standards and the concept of "the Other," and conducting in-depth analysis of the gathered data. The findings indicate that the film often positions women as "the Other," or as objects judged by external standards. Through its main character, the film also presents a form of resistance to these standards, underscoring the importance of self-acceptance and the freedom to define beauty independently. This study hopes to contribute to the discourse on existentialist feminism and highlight relevant issues regarding social pressures on women’s bodies in Indonesian popular culture.

Abstract

Film criticism involves evaluating the quality of a work from artistic, cultural, and technical perspectives. It does not only focus on the narrative or story of the film but also includes other elements such as cinematography, acting, character development, and the conveyed themes. Therefore, this study aims to explore social critique in the film Ali & Ratu Queens using Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological approach, specifically the concepts of habitus, capital, and field as presented in the film. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data drawn from the dialogues and actions of characters within the film. Data collection techniques include watching, marking, observing, and note-taking. The collected data is qualitatively analyzed by observing dialogues, identifying those that reflect Bourdieu’s theories, documenting them, classifying dialogues into categories of habitus, capital, and field, and drawing conclusions based on the analysis of these dialogues. The findings show that the film depicts habitus as a result of internalized social experiences, where economic, social, and cultural capital influences character interactions, and social and educational fields serve as arenas in which individuals compete for higher social positions. Through the application of Bourdieu’s theory, this research reveals that film can serve as an effective tool for critiquing and reflecting on the social and cultural conditions of society.

Abstract

The identity dynamics of a main character in a novel refer to how their sense of self, values, beliefs, and overall identity evolve throughout the narrative. These dynamics are shaped by psychological, emotional, and social factors, which influence how the character perceives themselves and is perceived by others. This process often occurs in response to the conflicts, experiences, or challenges the character faces. In literature, such transformations serve as powerful tools for examining broader societal themes, such as belonging, cultural assimilation, and personal growth. This research aims to analyze the identity dynamics of the main character in Kimchi Confessions by Xaviera Putri, exploring its implications for multicultural education in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative research method, this study uses a descriptive analysis approach to gain a deep understanding of the main character's identity development. The data source for this study is Kimchi Confessions, a novel inspired by Xaviera Putri’s personal experiences living in South Korea during her high school years. Published in 2023 by Gagas Media, the novel spans 200 pages. Data analysis is conducted using a discourse analysis approach to identify how the main character’s identity is represented throughout the narrative. The findings reveal that Xaviera’s experiences emphasize the importance of multicultural education in promoting cross-cultural understanding and inclusivity in Indonesia. This study highlights how literature can serve as a tool for fostering empathy and cultural awareness, suggesting that further research into identity dynamics in contemporary literature can enhance educational practices and societal integration.

Abstract

This study critically analyzes Nadiem Makarim's 2024 National Education Day speech, focusing on how language reflects and reshapes power dynamics and ideology within Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar (Independent Learning) reform initiative. The research seeks to answer two key questions: how does the speech frame educational reform through discourse, and how does it distribute power and convey participatory ideology? Using Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model and van Dijk’s Power and Ideology framework, this qualitative study examines the textual, discursive, and social practices within the speech. The findings reveal that the speech strategically emphasizes decentralization, teacher and student empowerment, and cultural values of gotong royong (mutual cooperation) while reframing challenges, such as the pandemic, as opportunities for systemic change. These results suggest that the speech functions as a tool to foster collective responsibility and support for long-term educational reform. The study concludes with recommendations for policymakers to adopt inclusive, culturally resonant discourse to ensure effective communication of reform initiatives. Future research could explore the long-term impact of such discourse on policy implementation across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

Speech acts play a crucial role in human communication, allowing individuals to perform actions through language. The application of speech act is crucial especially in communication because it is an action of communication. Therefore, this study investigates the various forms of illocutionary acts, with a particular emphasis on directive speech acts, as presented in the film "The Marvels" from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This study uses qualitative methodology to deeply analyze the use of directive speech acts in The Marvels. This qualitative approach is appropriate because it emphasizes a detailed examination of the dialogue, context, and pragmatic functions of language in the narrative. By focusing on the meaning and purpose behind the directive speech acts used by the main characters, this study aims to uncover patterns, relationships, and insights that cannot be easily measured. Utilizing Searle's theory of speech acts, Grice's conversational implicature theory, and the situational context framework proposed by Halliday and Hasan, the research explores the way the characters' dialogues are shaped by these linguistic principles. The analysis focuses on how the context of the dialogue influences the illocutionary force of the characters' interactions, revealing the intricate ways in which meaning is conveyed. The findings highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to understanding communication in film, showing that the study of language within specific contexts can enhance people’s appreciation of character interactions and narrative development. This research contributes to the broader field of linguistic analysis in literature and offers valuable insights for students and scholars.
