Abstract

Writing is a skill to express ideas and thoughts to make a message explicit. To arrange an idea in written text the students’ need soft skill in completing a text; grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary are the most important aspect in the writing skill that should be mastered by the students organizing the ideas. To attain the students' comprehend and overcome the obstacles in the writing skill, the researchers implementing a roundtable technique in the teaching process.The research aims to investigate the efficacy of the roundtable technique on EFL students' writing skills. Then, the researchers implement quasi-experimental design, Totally 46 students in each class. In addition, the researchers implement writing test as research instrument. The finding showed that the Roundtable technique is an effective way to improve students' writing skills and can stimulate students' attention to the writing skills. In addition, students found their identity and were more confident in elaborating the good ideas.  The two classes proved that the significance of the experimental class is higher than the control and the significant score is 0.0. This means that the roundtable technique is an effective way to implement in the classroom. It can encourage students to more focus on the issue and update the new information to improve their writing skills. Moreover, it is an enjoyable technique to implement in the classroom to create a good atmosphere and can improve students' attention in the writing process. Roundtable As a recommended solution to the English teachers and lecturers in prioritize to students writing skills. These is design to specifically improve students' grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary mastery in writing skills.

Abstract

At the polytechnic level of vocational education, students learn English as one of the fundamental skills. Improving one's communication abilities is crucial for students seeking higher professional positions in the tourism industry in this age of globalization. This study aims to apply a small group discussion strategy to enhance procedural text reading comprehension. Classroom action research (CAR) was the method used to conduct this study. The four stages were preparation, execution, monitoring, and evaluation. The first cycle's results showed that the students struggled to understand the process material. Among the students, just 53% were able to achieve a score higher than the minimum requirement of 76. Though cycle 2 was successful, there were still issues, such as students who weren't really engaged in their own study. The results of the observation, the questionnaire, and the students' reading scores all verified this. Around 81% of the students were able to meet those success criteria. Students' reading comprehension in the first semester of higher vocational education at the polytechnic was improved through the use of a small group discussion technique.

Abstract

Trust in oneself is a crucial aspect of personality development for students. The role of teachers is pivotal in fostering this self-trust among students. However, the implementation of this role often falls short, leading to instances where students lack confidence, such as feeling embarrassed when answering questions in front of the class. This study aims to delve into the teacher's role in cultivating students' self-trust, particularly among young learners in elementary schools. It employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing observation sheets, interview guidelines, and documentation to gather data. The data is analyzed qualitatively through techniques such as data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal several key roles that teachers play in nurturing EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners' self-confidence, including acting as motivators, providing feedback, facilitating communication, and offering information. Implications for further studies include exploring the effectiveness of specific teaching strategies in enhancing students' trust in themselves and investigating the long-term effects of teacher-student interactions on self-confidence development.

Abstract

As an essential element for effective communication, vocabulary knowledge plays a crucial role in language acquisition. With the increased importance of vocabulary learning, there is a new revolution called MALL (Mobile-Assisted Language learning). Several studies have looked into the possible advantages of Quizlet. However, they are mostly concentrated on the utilization of material that is already available and its consequences on the students’ motivation and receptive vocabulary acquisition. Comparatively, little research has been done on discussing the students’ perception in the use of the Quizlet application as a tool for vocabulary learning, especially in senior high school students Thus, this study aims to investigate student’s perception with different level of achievement about the use of Quizlet as a vocabulary-learning tool. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method and interview as the instrument to get an in-depth understanding about student’s perception in the use of Quizlet. There were six students with different levels of achievement in the English course as the participants of the study. The researcher used thematic analysis to analyze the collected data. According to the findings, Quizlet is found to be a useful tool for improving vocabulary acquisition, and students' positive opinions are reinforced by its gamified elements and multimedia integration. As technology continues to shape the landscape of education, platforms like Quizlet stand as examples of how innovative applications can revolutionize the learning experience. However, the findings could be strengthened by conducting additional study with larger participant sizes, more diversified data collection methods, and longer follow-up periods.

Abstract

Utilizing CLIL through group discussions has significantly enhanced the learning experience in accounting. To achieve this, CLIL is frequently integrated into reading comprehension classes to directly gather responses from international accounting program students through group discussions, aiding in managing and monitoring student engagement and comprehension. The study aimed to explore students' perspectives on the utilization of CLIL through group discussions. Six students from the international accounting program participated in a reading comprehension session employing the CLIL method through group discussions. Researchers conducted interviews to assess students' views regarding the expectations, benefits, and drawbacks of utilizing CLIL through group discussions. Findings revealed that participants perceived several advantages of using CLIL through group discussions, including improved comprehension of the material, opportunities for students to exchange their understanding, and increased motivation. However, challenges such as students' limited English fluency leading to prolonged discussions and potential misunderstandings of the material were noted. It is suggested that CLIL through group discussions be considered as an effective technique for enhancing reading comprehension.

Abstract

The study of Malay linguistics is a dynamic and intellectually engaging pursuit that provides valuable insights into the nuanced subtleties of one of the world's most widely spoken languages. The study of the Malay language holds a significant place in the extensive field of linguistic research because it reflects the diverse linguistic and cultural legacy of the Malay Archipelago. The study explores and analyses Malay linguistic studies conducted over the past two decades, examining trends, types of studies, research methodologies, prevalent themes, and author networks within Malay linguistics. The study employs bibliometric analysis of articles retrieved from the Scopus database using the keyword "Malay Linguistic." Utilising Vosviewer software, it identifies key trends and essential research themes within Malay linguistics. The findings revealed several key points. Firstly, publication trends in Malay linguistics varied over two decades, peaking at 91 publications in 2023, with stability observed from 2004 to 2009. This dynamic reflects evolving research interests with 724 publications. Major publishing venues were predominantly international journals in Malaysia and beyond the Malay Archipelago. Secondly, qualitative research was the primary method, often complemented by interdisciplinary and mixed-method approaches. Thirdly, common themes included Malay communities, dialect variations, identity, language structure, and applied linguistics. Fourthly, the author network in Malay linguistics remains interconnected, primarily among researchers from the Malay Peninsula. The trend of study themes in Malay linguistics has remained relatively stable, showing continuity with the status quo of the previous patterns. However, there has been a noticeable development in publication venues and author networks during this period.

Abstract

This article examines the connectedness between Wallace Stevens’ idea of a balance between reality and the imagination in his poem “The Comedian as the Letter C” and Kant’s idea that man’s knowledge of the world is always mediated by mental representations. Aware that the decline of spirituality means that man is left alienated in a thoroughly material world, Stevens strives to rescue humanity from spiritual emptiness and to make out of the same reality poetry in which the imagination brings meaning to man’s existence. In this poem, Stevens makes use of the motif of the flood  as an intertextual response to Hegel’s reading of the Greek and  biblical stories of the  flood that places Kant in the biblical tradition in which  man’s submission to God leads to his severance from his reality while the Greek story emphasizes the  harmonious coexistence between man and nature. Owing to the nature of this study, this article relies on close reading, a technique advocated by the New Critics and Julia Kristiva’s intertextuality that insists on the presence of elements of one text within another. This methodology highlights that the flood in “Comedian” is a vehicle through which Stevens rejects Hegel’s anti-Kantianism and insists that Kant’s epistemology is the most suitable philosophical paradigm to create a union between man and nature in a secular age. This union is possible if the poet is able to reach a balance between reality and the imagination.

Abstract

Poetry is a literary form that conveys the poet's emotions and thoughts through an imaginative and structured process. It is rich in emotion and distinct in its expression. Writing poetry involves channeling imagination into lines and stanzas, reflecting the poet's creative freedom and ownership. Within the framework of existentialism, poets exercise complete freedom in crafting their poetry without external influence. This study employs a qualitative approach using Hermeneutic analysis and data validation techniques, where data are validated through thorough reading to ascertain the meaning of each word and phrase. The data sources consist of seven poetry texts created by members of the extracurricular poetry group at MTs Miftahul Huda Palang Tuban. Data were collected in the form of words, phrases, and stanzas that depict existentialism, particularly individual freedom. The findings reveal five existential themes in the poetry: "me" (29%), "heart" (14%), "love" (14%), "friends" (29%), and "God" (14%). The terms "me" and "best friend" are the most prevalent, highlighting the themes of self-identity and interpersonal relationships as forms of existence. This study demonstrates that the poet's existence is manifested through the choice of words, with the dominant themes reflecting the poet's exploration of identity, relationships, and individual freedom.

Abstract

The pedagogical practices mostly applied in the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts include case-based learning (CBL). The CBL directs lecturers to teach their students about real decision-making scenarios. It is interactive learning and includes student-centered learning that shifts the classroom process to improve students’ critical learning and oral communicative skills. Therefore, this study investigates the pedagogical practices predominantly employed in ESP contexts, with a particular focus on case-based learning. CBL encourages lecturers to engage students with real decision-making scenarios, fostering an interactive, student-centered learning environment. This approach aims to enhance students' critical thinking and oral communication skills. Consequently, the research aims to explore how pedagogical practices can be used to improve these skills. To achieve this objective, the researchers conducted classroom action research involving 25 Accounting department students at State Polytechnic, Malang, who were enrolled in ESP courses. Data were collected through questionnaires, interview guidelines, and classroom observations, comprising both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The findings indicate that students showed significant improvement in both critical thinking and oral communication skills. In terms of critical thinking, students demonstrated the ability to analyze and evaluate arguments presented by their peers, discerning the truthfulness of the information. Regarding speaking skills, students effectively organized and communicated their ideas. These findings suggest that case-based learning is a valuable method for enhancing language skills, including reading, writing, and listening, in addition to speaking and critical thinking. Future studies should consider applying CBL to other aspects of language teaching to further validate its efficacy.

Abstract

Fairy tales can be used as the medium to comprehend the word formation using the derivational suffixes and the word structure using syntactic functions. Furthermore, adjectives are an important class words needed to create a descriptive text that is required in English task, test, or daily use. This research was conducted to identify the types of derivational suffixes that form adjectives and analyze the syntactic functions of derived words. Therefore, the present study is categorized as a qualitative study. The data were obtained from a book titled ‘The Snow Princess and Other Tales’ written by Hans Christian Andersen. The data were gathered using observation and note-taking techniques. The collected data were analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative technique. This research applied an informal method to present the data analysis. The findings of this research revealed that all twelves of the derivational suffixes to form adjective are found in the source. Suffix -al, -ate, -ish, -able, and -less form adjective from noun, suffix -ing, -ise/ize, -ive, -able, and -ing form adjective from verb, and suffix -ish and -ly form adjective and adverb from adjective. Meanwhile, for the syntactic functions the derived words can be functioned as the object, complement, and adverbial element; however, the function as subject and predicator. The result showed that fairy tales are able to help English learners to gain adjectives and its structure in a sentence.
