Abstract

Introduction: Self-care activities is one of the critical element of controlling diabetes. Diabetes knowledge and self-efficacy were two main predictors suggested by evidence to be important in supporting diabetes self-care activities; both factors were also found to have a strong relationship. However, the minimal study explored the mediating effect of self-efficacy on diabetes knowledge toward diabetes self-care activities among Indonesian. Objectives: This study wants to explore the role of diabetes knowledge and examine the mediating effect of self-efficacy on diabetes knowledge toward diabetes self-care activities among Indonesian. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional-correlative study among 211 Indonesian adults with diabetes who utilized OPD Hospital in Malang, Indonesia. The primary valid and reliable instruments that measure diabetes knowledge, diabetes self-care activities, and self-efficacy were used in this study. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23 Software, and the mediating effect analysis examines using Hayes PROCESS software for SPSS. Results: Most subjects demonstrated low diabetes knowledge and self-efficacy and reported less than optimal self-care activities. Self-efficacy shows a 'complete mediating effect' in diabetes knowledge toward diabetes self-care activities. Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of diabetes knowledge and self-efficacy and both factors' existence in supporting diabetes self-care activities.

Abstract

Introduction: People who are excess weight have expanded insulin resistance and the development of high blood sugar, which drives prediabetic status and later generates diabetes mellitus. Someone can experience prediabetes for several years, but they don't know any symptoms. Ultimately, they experience health problems leading to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients who are overweight lack self-awareness about diabetes mellitus (DM). Objectives: This research aims to determine the relationship between self-awareness and prediabetes status in overweight patients. Method: This research uses an analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. There were 84 respondents obtained from the accidental sampling technique. Data were collected from the Self Awareness Diabetes Mellitus questionnaire and random blood glucose results. Data were analyzed using Spearman rank with a significance value of 0.05. Result: The results showed a significant relationship between self-awareness about DM and prediabetes status with a negative correlation (p < 0.001; r = 0.678). This correlation means that the higher the self-awareness, the lower the respondent has prediabetes. In overweight patients, fat accumulation in the body can reduce insulin action, affecting prediabetes. Self-awareness is an attitude that someone with excess body weight must possess to prevent prediabetes. Conclusion: This study revealed the importance of increasing self-awareness and enforcing blood glucose control routinely so that someone who has entered the prediabetes category can enhance their lifestyle to stop diabetes mellitus.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between democratic, authoritarian, and permissive parenting on the formation of adolescent self-identity in Karangploso District, Malang Regency. Methods: The research design was a cross-sectional study; data were collected using the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) and the Adolescent Self-Identity Scale. The sample in this study was 80 respondents; the sample selection criteria used a purposive sampling technique and then statistically tested using Spearman rank. This research has obtained ethical approval with the number No.E.5.a/261/KEPK-UMM/XII/2021. Results: The crosstab analysis showed that the most frequently used form of parenting was democratic, with the formation of adolescent self-identity at a moderate level (53.6%). Meanwhile, the bivariate analysis results with Spearman rank showed that the authoritarian, democratic, and permissive parenting styles all had a relationship with adolescent self-identity with a P value of <0.05. Conclusions: The majority of parents apply democratic parenting to form adolescent self-identity; this is because, at this age, adolescents enter a phase of self-discovery with the characteristics of having the ability to think conceptually and want to be appreciated so that the application of this democratic parenting pattern can accommodate the formation of self-identity towards moderate and high.
