Abstract

Kuda Lumping or ébég is a typical Sundanese traditional dance that requires the presence of spontaneity when it is played. In it, the elements of profane from the dance and the elements of sacred from its rituals are combined as a medium for the manifestation of the spiritual to the material. It is said that spiritual power is present in the human world through this spontaneity. This is why trance often occurs in the riders of Kuda Lumping as a medium for the presence of spiritual power. The Sundanese people with the Tri Tangtu philosophy believe that mediation through Kuda Lumping is a way for the community to communicate with Sang Hyang or Batara Tunggal. In this paper, the exploration of cultural hermeneutic studies on the Kuda Lumping dance will be discussed based on the dimensions of Tri Tangtu.

Abstract

Transhumanism attempts to overcome human limitations through the use of technology, such as nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and genetic modifications. In the monist ethical perspective, humans are considered complex material entities, and consciousness is understood as a product of the physical and chemical interactions in the brain with various other parts of the body. The problem is that with such artificial revolutions, ethical foundations based on corporeal limitations become irrelevant. Gilbert Ryle questions Platonistic dispositions that overly rely on reduction with the consequence of extractive knowledge rather than abstract knowledge. Plato's line of thought is then strengthened by Cartesian dualism, which, when applied in a monist perspective, can be reduced to an extraction of brain performance. Ryle proposes an abstraction that allows for the interaction between elements to form a unified understanding of the complex. Based on Ryle's thinking, a study of monist ethics can offer a thoughtful approach to constructing an ethical framework that aligns with the transhumanist era's revolution.

Abstract

The focus of this research is to explore the concept of man according to Dayak Wehea in the light of Martin Buber's philosophy. Thus, the data mining and research site are centered on the Wehea Dayak Tribe. This research departs from the author's awareness of the noble cultural values contained in customs, which in the course of time began to be eroded by the currents of time. In the midst of this modern era, the values of local wisdom are starting to be neglected and many local people do not understand the values and meaning behind these customs and culture. Departing from this phenomenon, this research attempts to explore and document local wisdom values specifically regarding the concept of humans as relational creatures as promoted by Martin Buber. The methodology used in this research is a qualitative method through literature study by processing existing data. Apart from that, to ensure the authenticity of the writing regarding the customs of the Wehea Dayak Tribe, interviews were also conducted with resource persons who are traditional leaders who understand and still implement these customs. From the research results, it was found that the concept of humans as relational creatures as promoted by Martin Buber is actually pervasive and manifested in the life and culture of the Wehea Dayak Tribe, specifically this conception is manifested in traditional birth, marriage and death ceremonies.

Abstract

The focus of this research is to delve into the concept of humanity according to the Dayak Wehea, examined through Ernst Cassirer's philosophy. The Dayak Wehea upholds a distinctive tradition of customs that remains practiced by a significant portion of their community. These customary traditions include rituals surrounding birth, marriage, and death, which inherently contain a wealth of anthropological and philosophical values specific to the Dayak Wehea. Presently, these traditions face cultural degradation due to the overwhelming influence of modern culture. Consequently, this study is motivated by concern and awareness regarding the existence of the Dayak Wehea people, particularly the erosion of their noble traditions over time. The objective is to explore and document the traditional values of Dayak Wehea customs, specifically focusing on the human concept embedded within the three rituals: birth, marriage, and death. This exploration of anthropological values is guided by Ernst Cassirer's philosophical framework. Additionally, the research aims to provide readers with an understanding of the anthropological significance of these rituals. The methodology employed is qualitative, involving a literature review and data analysis. To ensure authenticity, interviews were conducted with key informants, notably traditional leaders who possess firsthand knowledge and continue to practice these customs. The findings reveal the Dayak Wehea's concept of humanity as symbolic beings, beings of noble dignity, relational beings, pilgrims of hope, and religious beings.

Abstract

This article explores the thoughts of one of contemporary feminist political figures, Iris Marion Young of the body, as well analyzing the dynamics of power, inequality, and experiences of social, cultural, and political alienation. Young states that the body transcends its physicality, it emerges as a locus of politics. Power, he says, operates on the body through social norms, cultural expectations, and policies, shaping the way individuals understand and experience their bodies. These norms, depicted as sources of inequality in bodily experience, contribute to the establishment of socio-political hierarchies in society. Understanding the potential and capacity of the body has a significant political influence in determining the existence of women within the framework of society. This paper aims to describe and analyze Young's concept of feminist politics and highlight its political implications regarding the role of women in society. This research begins with the assumption that, through self-transcendence and understanding the body's capacity to resist immanence, women can assert their existence in society. Rooted in the belief that, as political subjects, all humans are inherently equal, Young challenges traditional paradigms of social and political roles, offering a radical perspective on the body and the self-empowering capacity to live with others. To achieve this goal, the author uses a literature review methodology, emphasizing elements of philosophical research methods such as hermeneutics, description, inductive and deductive analysis, as well as analysis of the coherence of Young's ideas. This article contributes to the ongoing discourse on feminist philosophy, offering a comprehensive exploration of Young's influential thinking on the political dimensions of the body and its implications for women's roles in society.

Abstract

This text discusses the problematic nature of photography since its inception. This disposition arises because photography is a manifestation of the dualistic thinking pattern matured by René Descartes and radicalized by Immanuel Kant. Photography, which began in the 19th century, was analog and relied on the permanent traces of time caused by chemical reactions. The strong claim of photography against the singularity of artistic work positions it as a threat to the value of art on one hand, while on the other, photography opens up various new approaches to artistic expression. Around 150 years after its birth, photography faced a serious challenge: even with digital technology, which eliminates the permanence of time traces, photography was considered "dead." This perceived death of photography led to ideological approaches viewing the existence of photography as post-medium discourse. By examining the development of major literature during the transition from analog to digital photography, this ideological approach further guides the discourse on photography as a metatheoretical and paradigmatic area. By shedding temporal elements, the discourse on photography moves more agilely within the framework of complex material monism—becoming a way of existing in a non-dualistic knowledge structure.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss efforts to prevent political polarization in the 2024 election year by using library data collection methods. The results of this research are that political polarization can occur in any situation and condition especially during elections, public policy, socio-cultural issues including post-debate issues for the Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates. The causes of political polarization are none other than political parties, mass media, regional expansion, political context and society's political ideology. Political polarization has positive and negative impacts. However, of these two impacts, there are more negative impacts. The negative impacts that can be caused by political polarization are the creation of divisions, damage to democratic institutions, loss of credibility of political parties, impact on government, and reduced credibility of society, while the positive impacts of political polarization are strengthening relationships and increasing participation in politics. Political polarization will very easily occur when the public or supporters are easily carried away by issues circulating in society such as differences in ideology, choices and principles between one camp and another. Several efforts can be made to prevent political polarization, namely: the public must be able to sort and choose the issues circulating and not be too fanatical about their choices, instill and implement the values of Pancasila, and implement the value of harmonization of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika.

Abstract

This research entitled "Portrayals of The Dutch Colonial Tea Plantation in Hella Haasse’s The Tea Lords (1992)," examines how the Dutch colonial tea plantation in Java is depicted in the novel. Set during Dutch colonization in the 19th century in the East Indies, the study uses the new historicism theoretical framework to analyze various portrayals of the plantation and their impact on East Indies society, culture, and economics. Employing qualitative methods, the researcher explores the historical context presented in the novel and history books to uncover the link between literary and non-literary texts. Findings reveal that the plantation significantly influenced East Indies society, culture, and economics, with the setting playing a central role in the narrative, providing readers with a deeper understanding of colonialism's impact. The research exposes economic disparities, highlighting exploitation and hierarchy in social and labor dynamics. Analysis of the Kerkhoven family sheds light on their challenges and moral dilemmas. Identity negotiation amid colonialism is explored, with the author's Dutch background influencing the novel's narration and conveying views on historical events. The study concludes that literature like The Tea Lords can challenge established historical narratives and is intertwined with broader cultural discourse.

Abstract

The study of modernity reveals significant transformations in both space and time, accompanied by a shift from traditional to digital modes of thinking. Anthony Giddens, a prominent scholar in the discourse of modernity, emphasizes the interconnectedness of capitalism, industrialism, surveillance, and military power, highlighting their inseparability. Capitalism operates as a system of commodity production, centered on the relationship between private capital rights and labor devoid of ownership rights. Industrialism involves the efficient utilization of material resources for production purposes. Surveillance encompasses the collection, control, and supervision of information and individual activities, particularly in political domains. Meanwhile, military power characterizes a modern state's ability to monopolize the use of mobilizing forces. The main issue to be researched is how the interconnectedness of capitalism, industrialism, surveillance, and military power in the context of modernity influences the social dynamics of society. This research is significant in understanding the complex network of modern society and addressing the challenges faced, particularly regarding rapid social changes and the complexity of relationships between economic, political, and military forces.

Abstract

This article intends to explore the concept of iki aesthetics and investigate its relevance to modern aesthetics. The method used in this article is qualitative, a literature study that specifically focuses on using the thoughts of the philosopher Kuki Shuzo in the book The Structure of Iki. The results show that iki consists of bitai, ikiji, and akirame and that iki is also still relevant for modern aesthetics. In conclusion, iki evokes a certain kind of sensibility through the tension that emerges through dualistic relationships. And this unique form of sensibility proves to still be very relevant in modern aesthetics. This is proven by the fact that Japanese aesthetics are also in demand by people outside of Japan and that there are still various inquiries into modern aesthetics whilst takin into account the role of iki.
