Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of fostering empathy in literature education amidst a modern social reality that tends to foster alienation and the decline of human harmony. Literature has the potential to serve as a reflective and therapeutic medium. However, its application in bibliotherapy-based learning integrated with a hermeneutic approach remains limited. This study aims to analyse the representation of empathy in the short story “Jakarta” by Totilawati Tjitrawasita and to examine its function as a bibliotherapy medium in literature education. The study engaged a qualitative approach with a hermeneutic interpretative method. Textual data were analysed through critical reading and interpretation based on the relationship between parts and the whole text. The findings indicate that this short story contains strong cognitive and affective empathy through the relationships between characters and the inner experiences of the main characters. The findings further illustrate that the character’s alienation represents social inequality and shifting values in modern society. Furthermore, this short story fulfills the stages of bibliotherapy, namely identification, catharsis, and insight, which demonstrate the reader’s emotional and reflective engagement. The study has demonstrated that the short story “Jakarta” can be harnessed as a bibliotherapy-based learning medium to enhance empathy and social awareness.

Abstract

The transformation of digital business communication has shifted persuasive practices from linear textual approaches toward multimodal, interactive, and data-driven communication. However, business persuasive writing instruction in higher education remains largely conventional, limiting the development of multimodal competence, audience analysis, and data utilization. This study aims to identify the gap in the integration of digital rhetoric in business persuasive writing instruction at Lombok Business Academy (AKBIL). This study employed a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, involving a survey of 80 students, analysis of written documents, and interviews with students and lecturers. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis to enrich interpretation. The findings indicate that the overall level of digital rhetoric integration is moderate (M = 3.12). Audience awareness shows a relatively higher score (M = 3.34), yet remains general and not supported by data-driven analytics. Multimodal integration (M = 3.05) is not yet strategic, as visual elements are primarily used decoratively. Data-driven persuasion emerges as the weakest dimension (M = 2.84), characterized by limited use of quantitative evidence and data visualization. Qualitative findings further reveal that instruction remains text-oriented, with limited pedagogical readiness among lecturers and low levels of student data literacy. The study highlights a gap between the demands of digital business communication and current pedagogical practices. Therefore, it underscores the need for developing a digital–rhetorical pedagogy model that systematically integrates multiliteracies, data-driven audience analysis, and evidence-based argumentation in business persuasive writing instruction.

Abstract

The interaction of gender, class, and ethnicity shapes representations of women within social contexts. This study investigates the intersections of gender, class, and ethnicity in the film Hati Suhita and their impacts on character portrayal and narrative conflict. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected via library research and systematic viewing with detailed note-taking; validity was secured through theoretical triangulation. Data were analyzed using thematic techniques alongside Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The research questions were addressed by evaluating the interactions among the three variables and their effects on character representation and emergent conflicts. Findings indicate that gendered intersections manifest in expectations of domestic labour and the endurance imposed on the female protagonist in her role as wife; class intersections are evident in her positional authority as a member of the pesantren elite, conferring leadership and mediatory capacities in intergenerational familial disputes; and ethnic-cultural intersections appear through spiritual practices—such as tabarukan, uzlah, and pilgrimage to revered graves—which function as religious coping strategies in response to emotional strain and domestic discord. Thus, the film demonstrates that women’s lived experiences cannot be comprehended solely through gender categories but must be read through the simultaneous confluence of multiple social and cultural identities that shape how individuals perceive, respond to, and negotiate their realities. These findings contribute to scholarship on intersectionality in arts and culture and underscore the necessity of layered analytical frameworks in film studies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine linguistic variations in Alternate Universe (AU) content on the platforms X, TikTok, and Instagram, and to analyze their relationship with reader interests. AU, as a form of cyberliterature, has flourished on social media and employs informal language that reflects digital communication practices. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing linguistic units (words, phrases, clauses, and sentences) containing linguistic variation in AU content across the three platforms. The data were also garnered from questionnaire data from the AU reader community. Data were analysed using William Labov’s theory of linguistic variation. The results showed that the identified language variations included vulgar language, slang, and code-mixing, which were used systematically and contextually. There are different tendencies of how language variation occurred across platforms. Platform X tends to use vulgar language more explicitly to heighten emotional expression and narrative conflict. TikTok demonstrates a predominance of concise and efficient slang, while Instagram features a mix of code-switching and more context-specific slang as a strategy for expression and communicative aesthetics. The research findings also indicate that the use of language variations aligned with platform characteristics correlates with increased reader interest, as evidenced by positive responses to language perceived as communicative, relatable, and relevant to everyday communication practices. Theoretically, this study reinforces sociolinguistic research on language variation as a phenomenon influenced by social context, and it extends the inquiry into the digital realm by demonstrating how social media platforms help shape language variation. This study contributes to the development of digital sociolinguistic research, particularly in understanding the dynamics of language in social media-based narratives.

Abstract

Curriculum reform is only as transformative as the paradigms teachers bring to its implementation. The Merdeka Curriculum places assessment at the core of the learning process, demanding a decisive departure from older, obligation-driven, summative paradigms toward integrated, formative, and student-centred orientations. Yet whether Indonesian language teachers have genuinely abandoned their prior assessment paradigms or continue to operate within them despite a new curricular mandate remains empirically underdocumented. This study examines how Indonesian language teachers at the junior secondary level perceive learning assessment under the Merdeka Curriculum, focusing on their understanding of assessment principles, curriculum orientation, and the three foundational assessment orientations: Assessment of Learning (AoL), Assessment for Learning (AfL), and Assessment as Learning (AaL). Using a qualitative descriptive design, structured interviews were conducted with teachers from five public junior secondary schools (SMP Negeri) in Bandung City. Data were analysed through the Miles and Huberman interactive model  encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing  with trustworthiness ensured through member-checking and researcher triangulation. The findings reveal a consistent pattern: despite operating under a new curriculum, the majority of teachers continue to govern their assessment practice through an old paradigm that treats assessment as a bureaucratic obligation tied to formal examination schedules rather than as a holistic, ongoing component of the learning continuum. Most teachers demonstrated limited understanding of the Merdeka Curriculum’s five assessment principles and of the AoL/AfL/AaL orientations, and showed minimal engagement with self-assessment and peer assessment. These findings confirm that old paradigms are both real and pervasive, and underscore the urgency of targeted professional development to bring teachers’ assessment practice into genuine alignment with the Merdeka Framework.

Abstract

The gallery walk method is an active learning strategy based on group rotation that encourages interaction and discussion among students. This study aims to analyze students' perceptions of the effectiveness of the gallery walk method in English language learning for health science students in Bandar Lampung. The study employed a quantitative descriptive approach using a questionnaire distributed to 85 students from Panca Bhakti School of Health Sciences (n=58) and Baitul Hikmah School of Health Sciences (n=27). The instrument consisted of 28 items covering five dimensions: (1) engagement and learning motivation, (2) improvement in English proficiency, (3) relevance to health needs, (4) implementation and execution of learning, and (5) collaboration and interaction among groups. The measurement scale used a 1–5 Likert scale. The results showed an overall mean of 4.42 (SD=0.60), indicating a very positive perception. The highest dimension was engagement and motivation (M=4.47), followed by English proficiency improvement and implementation (M=4.43), and medical relevance and collaboration (M=4.39). The most highly rated items were that the Gallery Walk makes learning more interesting (M=4.59) and creates a livelier classroom atmosphere (M=4.57). The lowest scores were for grammar mastery and vocabulary retention (M=4.32), reflecting the method’s communicative rather than form-focused orientation. In conclusion, the Gallery Walk is perceived as highly effective in enhancing motivation, engagement, and the contextual relevance of English learning in health education settings. These findings are based on student self-reports and do not constitute experimental evidence of proficiency gains.

Abstract

The increasing use of social media has transformed sport photography from a form of visual documentation into a complex medium of digital discourse and visual semiotics. This study examines sport photography as a multimodal communicative practice while simultaneously synthesizing empirical evidence through a meta-analytic approach. The urgency of this research lies in the fragmentation of previous studies, which tend to examine engagement, branding, or gender representation separately without providing an integrative and quantitative synthesis. This study employs a systematic literature review and meta-analysis following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, analyzing 30 peer-reviewed studies published between 2022 and 2026. Of these, only studies with sufficient quantitative data were included in the meta-analysis, while the remaining studies supported qualitative synthesis. The findings reveal a moderate overall effect size (g = 0.44), indicating that sport photography has a significant yet context-dependent influence on audience engagement and perception. The heterogeneity value (I² = 64.3%) demonstrates substantial variation across platforms, cultural contexts, and methodological approaches. These results indicate that sport photography functions not only as visual representation but also as a dynamic semiotic resource that constructs meaning, identity, and ideological discourse in digital environments. In conclusion, this study contributes by integrating digital discourse, visual semiotics, and meta-analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of sport photography in contemporary media.

Abstract

This study reconstructs the semiotic system embedded in the translated verses of Mahllul Qiyam and examines its psychopedagogical implications for values-based Indonesian language education. Existing scholarship reveals a critical gap: religious texts are predominantly treated as literary or cultural artifacts, with limited attention to their role in mediating affective and value formation. Addressing this limitation, the present study advances an integrative framework that synthesizes Barthesian semiotics with educational psychology to elucidate how linguistic signs operate in the production of meaning, the activation of affect, and the internalization of values. Methodologically, the study adopts an interpretive qualitative approach, employing a text-based analytical design grounded in library research. The corpus comprises 47 lines across 23 stanzas. Data are analyzed using Barthes’ two-order signification model (denotation and connotation/myth), complemented by a psychopedagogical lens that foregrounds affective activation, symbolic identification, and value internalization. The findings demonstrate that the dominant signs construct a multilayered system of religious meaning. These meanings are articulated through representations of reverence for the Prophet Muhammad and through the cultivation of affective and moral orientations, including respect, emotional attachment, spiritual aspiration, and transcendental awareness. The semiotic configuration operates as a symbolic mechanism that facilitates value internalization via emotional resonance and linguistic repetition. Theoretically, this study contributes an integrative semiotic–psychopedagogical model that extends semiotic inquiry into the domain of affective learning. Pedagogically, the findings suggest that Mahllul Qiyam can be effectively developed as interpretive instructional material to foster symbolic literacy, empathy, and character formation through reflective, value-oriented language learning practices.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited scholarly attention to Suparto Brata’s Gadis Tangsi trilogy as a literary source for understanding noble character values in Javanese society. It aims to identify and interpret the forms of character education represented in the trilogy and to explain their relevance to readers within a pragmatic literary perspective. The study employed a descriptive qualitative design. Data were drawn from the three novels in the Gadis Tangsi trilogy and were supported by documentation and interviews. The data were analyzed through an interactive model involving data reduction, data display, interpretation, and conclusion drawing, while validity was strengthened through triangulation of theory, data, and methods. The findings show that the trilogy presents character education as an integrated moral-cultural framework rather than as isolated lessons. The narrative consistently portrays the virtues expected of Javanese women, a disciplined work ethic, ethical conduct in social relations, spiritual awareness, and broader ideals of personal character. These values are embedded in the characters’ actions, conflicts, and choices, revealing how social responsibility, self-control, dignity, and inner balance are cultivated within Javanese cultural life. The novelty of this study lies in its synthesized reading of the trilogy as a coherent representation of noble character formation in Javanese society. This contribution enriches literary studies by demonstrating how narrative fiction preserves cultural ethics and transmits social ideals across generations. It also offers a relevant model for character education by showing that literary texts can function as reflective pedagogical resources in contemporary learning contexts for schools and universities today.

Abstract

The study entitled "The Effectiveness of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in Improving Vocabulary Mastery" aims to determine the extent to which the use of mobile technology can contribute significantly to improving students' English vocabulary mastery. A qualitative approach with a descriptive design was used in this study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis involving students and English teachers who used mobile-based learning applications such as Duolingo and Quizlet. Data analysis was conducted interactively, including data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with triangulation techniques used to ensure validity. The findings show that MALL significantly improves students' vocabulary mastery, including comprehension, pronunciation, and the ability to use vocabulary in context. In addition, MALL has been shown to increase student motivation to learn through features such as gamification, instant feedback, and flexibility in learning time and location. Teachers also experienced positive impacts, particularly in creating a more effective, diverse, and student-centered learning environment, as well as in shifting their role towards that of a learning facilitator. In conclusion, this study shows that MALL is an effective, innovative, and relevant strategy for improving English vocabulary learning and meeting the needs of learners in the digital age.
