Abstract

This study explores how audiovisual literacy, particularly through narrative film, functions within cinematherapy interventions to enhance exercise intention among university students. Using a qualitative-quantitative reception study approach with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, fourteen psychology students with low initial exercise intention participated in three weekly film-viewing sessions featuring Brittany Runs a Marathon, Creed, and Eddie the Eagle. The Exercise Intention Scale was administered before and after the intervention. Results showed a significant increase in exercise intention scores, from an average of 33 to 53 (t = 4.876, p < 0.001; Cohen's d = 1.28). Theoretically, these findings are analyzed through the lens of Narrative Transportation Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Theory of Planned Behavior. The integration of these three frameworks reveals that films are not merely entertainment but function as narrative texts that foster emotional engagement, observational learning, and positive shifts in attitudes and perceived behavioral control. This study concludes that cinematherapy, grounded in audiovisual literacy, offers an accessible, affordable, and emotionally resonant strategy for promoting physical activity motivation among youth, particularly within higher education settings.

Abstract

This study examines the use of YouTube-based digital folklore content in creative writing instruction and its contribution to students’ writing development. The study was conducted with 30 students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program at STKIP PGRI Bangkalan who were enrolled in the Creative Writing course in the odd semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. A mixed-methods approach was employed by combining descriptive quantitative data and qualitative classroom data. Quantitative data were obtained from pre-test and post-test writing scores as well as student-response questionnaires, while qualitative data were collected through classroom observation and interviews. The findings indicate an improvement in students’ writing performance, as reflected in the increase in the mean writing score from 60 to 85. Students’ understanding of folklore content also increased from 30% to 82%. In addition, most students responded positively to the learning process, with 95% reporting that they felt comfortable learning through YouTube-based folklore content, 93% stating that the videos helped them understand the material more quickly, and 92% reporting greater participation in classroom discussion. Qualitative findings further show that the use of audiovisual folklore content supported students’ concentration, self-confidence, and ability to develop ideas in writing. These findings suggest that YouTube-based digital folklore content can function as a contextual and engaging medium for writing instruction while simultaneously strengthening students’ cultural literacy.

Abstract

The development of religious character among elementary school students continues to face implementation challenges, as school literacy programs tend to emphasise cognitive aspects while insufficiently integrating reflective processes. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of guided multimodal expressive writing in strengthening students’ religious character and to explain the underlying mechanisms of value internalisation. This study employed a mixed methods approach using a sequential explanatory design. The quantitative component used a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, involving 30 first-grade students from a Muhammadiyah elementary school selected through purposive sampling. The instruments included a religious character observation checklist, a multimodal work analysis rubric, and anecdotal records. Quantitative data were analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, while qualitative data were analysed through thematic analysis. The results showed significant improvements across all dimensions of religious character (p < 0.001), with large effect sizes (r = 0.75–0.87), particularly in religious awareness and social care. Qualitative findings indicated that these improvements were associated with the development of reflective processing, which enabled students to construct meaning from their experiences. This study contributes a structured model of guided multimodal expressive writing that integrates multimodal expression and reflective scaffolding to support value internalisation among early-grade students. These findings suggest that expressive writing can function as a pedagogical strategy within literacy programs to support the development of students’ religious character.

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of picture cards and alphabet puzzle media in improving early childhood literacy skills and increasing learning interest among children at TK ABA II Socah. The research involved 24 students in Group B, and all members of the population were selected as the sample through a saturated sampling technique. This study applied a quantitative approach by comparing the use of picture cards in the control group and alphabet puzzles in the experimental group. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS through several statistical procedures, including tests of homogeneity, normality, instrument validity, and the Independent Samples T-test. These analyses were carried out to ensure that the data met the necessary assumptions and that the research instruments were valid and reliable for measuring both reading ability and learning interest. The results revealed a significant difference between the two groups. For reading ability, the significance value was 0.001, which is lower than 0.05, indicating that the difference between the groups was statistically significant. Similarly, for learning interest, the significance value was 0.000, which also confirms a significant difference. These findings demonstrate that the use of alphabet puzzle media produces better outcomes than picture cards in supporting early childhood learning. Children who learned through alphabet puzzles showed stronger reading performance and higher enthusiasm in participating in classroom activities. Therefore, this study concludes that alphabet puzzles are more effective than picture cards in enhancing literacy development and fostering students’ interest in learning at the early childhood education level.

Abstract

This research is designed to investigate the impact of the Structural Analytic Synthetic (SAS) method on the early reading and writing abilities of first-grade elementary school students. This study uses a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group framework, involving 50 first-grade students from Gili Anyar Elementary School, who were allocated into experimental and control groups using total sampling method. The experimental group was taught using the SAS model, while the control group used traditional techniques. Instruments, including initial reading and writing assessments, have undergone content validity evaluation by experts and reliability testing using the Cronbach Alpha coefficient. Data analysis was conducted using an independent sample t-test after confirming normality and homogeneity. The research findings indicate a significant difference between the two groups. The experimental group achieved an average posttest score of 77.52 in reading and 81.6 in writing, while the control group achieved scores of 42.00 and 45.12, respectively, with a p-value of less than 0.05. This data confirms that the SAS model, thru the structural, analytical, and synthesis stages, facilitates a more systematic understanding of the relationships between letters, syllables, words, and sentences for children. This research is novel because of the use of SAS in rural elementary schools, a subject that is rarely studied. The practical implication is that early-grade educators can use SAS as an alternative method to cohesively enhance early reading. Additional studies are recommended to increase the sample size, extend the duration of the intervention, and incorporate parental support and environmental elements to achieve more comprehensive results.

Abstract

The study investigates how discourse constructs ideology and power relations through textual and social dimensions. This study employs critical discourse analysis through Van Dijk's (2008) framework to examine Joe Biden's speech after Donald Trump's 2024 presidential victory. Through macrostructure, his speech demonstrated the tenacity of democracy and the importance of collective responsibility. The main message of his speech was inclusiveness and faith in the democratic process and to appeal for Americans to come together no matter where they stand on a political differences. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method based on Van Dijk's (2008) theory. This analysis uses Van Dijk's (2008) three-dimensional model that includes macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. This study investigates how Biden's discourse legitimized the electoral process, bridged political divisions, and influenced public narratives. The results reveal how Biden strategically uses language to promote unity, trust in democratic institutions, and peaceful transition, highlighting the power of political discourse in navigating difficult times. It is contributes to understanding the role of presidential communication in shaping national narratives and managing social cohesion during political transitions. The study contributes to discourse analysis by demonstrating how Van Dijk’s model can reveal hidden ideologies in language and highlight the relationship between discourse and social power.

Abstract

This study was prompted by the low level of student engagement in writing lessons at lower secondary school, particularly when teaching procedural texts, which are still dominated by lecture-based methods, the use of generic teaching materials, and a lack of integration of local cultural contexts into the learning process. These conditions result in students being less active, easily bored, and struggling to express their ideas coherently in writing. This study aims to develop a task-based textbook incorporating local wisdom to improve the writing skills of junior high school students in Bantul Regency. The study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which comprises the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The research was conducted at State Junior High School 2 Imogiri, with the test subjects comprising Year 7 pupils, Indonesian language teachers, subject matter experts, and experts in teaching materials or media. Data collection methods included observation, interviews, questionnaires, tests and documentation. The data were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The research findings indicate that the textbook developed meets the criteria for suitability based on expert validation, is practical based on feedback from teachers and pupils, and is effective for use in teaching procedural writing. The use of a task-based approach helps pupils to write in a gradual and structured manner, whilst the inclusion of local wisdom makes learning more contextual, closely aligned with pupils’ experiences, and encourages greater engagement in the learning process. Consequently, task-based textbooks incorporating local wisdom can be used as an alternative teaching resource in Indonesian language lessons to support the development of pupils’ writing skills.

Abstract

The previous studies on Malay wedding traditions have largely focused on describing lexical meanings or general cultural elements, while the representation of cultural values ??embedded in the integrity of ritual icons and proverbs has not been comprehensively examined. This study aimed to describe the representation of cultural meanings and values ??in the Tunjuk Ajar Tegur Sapo tradition during traditional Malay wedding ceremonies in Muaro Jambi regency, Jambi Province. Using a qualitative descriptive method through an ethnolinguistic approach, this study examined the relationship between language, culture, and value systems. Data are sourced from recordings of traditional speech, verbal symbols, and customary advice with informants, traditional leaders and practitioners directly involved. Data collection was carried out through a free-engagement conversation technique to record authentic interactions. The results reveal that the Tunjuk Ajar Tegur Sapo tradition is a concrete manifestation of the values ??of responsibility, harmony, and social ethics symbolically represented through expressions of affection and collective social support. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of analysis between physical icons and proverbs as an integrated system that legitimizes community moral standards. Theoretically, this research contributes to strengthening ethnolinguistic studies by proving that ritual speech is not just a means of communication, but a vital instrument in maintaining the stability of cultural values ??and mediating the transition of social life in the Muaro Jambi Malay community.

Abstract

Abstract

Swearing involves using harsh words and is employed in both serious and casual contexts. Most swearing is studied based on its use in speech as a sociolinguistic study. Based on this, it is very important to discuss swearing based on the relationship of its constituent elements with a semantic approach so that the meaning of swearing is known based on the relationship of the referred referents. This study aims to elucidate the meaning of swearing in relation to the constituent elements of cognitive semantics. Thus, the meaning and function of swearing in the slang of high school students are known. This type of research is qualitative, focusing on oral communication in slang within the high school student community. Data were obtained from observations of communication among high school students in Denpasar who were born between 2008 and 2010. Data collection used observation and interview methods. The study's results found that high school students in Denpasar use animal words, such as "dog," "monkey," and "pig," in their swearing forms. In addition, the referred references are also found to be psychological terms related to the psyche. High school students use swear words indirectly, thus conveying implicit meanings. High school students express emotions through swear words, which use comparisons to referents within their cognitive domains. This study found that swear words are classified as non-literal. The function of swear words in the colloquial language of high school students is to convey annoyance and joking, intended to foster camaraderie with fellow students.
