Abstract

This study aims to investigate in depth how students' reliance on AI in English learning shapes, limits, or transforms their critical thinking processes in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in vocational secondary education. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design to examine students' reliance on AI and its implications for critical thinking skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. The study was conducted at SMKN 1 Bangorejo Banyuwangi, which was purposively selected because it has utilized AI applications in English learning. The research subjects were determined through purposive sampling, namely students who actively use AI. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, learning observations, and document analysis. Data were analyzed thematically through the stages of reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in English learning at SMKN 1 Bangorejo has a dual impact on student learning. On the one hand, AI has been shown to improve the linguistic quality of students' writing, particularly in aspects of grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary. However, this improvement was not accompanied by a balanced development of critical thinking. Intensive use of AI tends to shift students' learning orientation from cognitive processes to end results, limiting analysis, evaluation, and reflection. This situation has the potential to trigger cognitive dependency or cognitive offloading. This finding emphasizes the importance of teachers' role in designing pedagogical strategies that position AI as a supporting tool, not a substitute for thinking processes, to maintain a balance between linguistic achievement and cognitive depth.

Abstract

This study addresses a critical gap in language education, where critical thinking is often treated as a situational cognitive skill rather than a sustained intellectual disposition. It examines how affective internalization shapes the development of critical thinking in Arabic language learning. A qualitative case study was conducted over eight weeks, involving sixteen classroom observations, semi-structured interviews (2 teachers and 12 students), and document analysis, with data analyzed thematically based on Krathwohl’s affective domain. The findings show that critical thinking develops through five stages: receiving, responding, valuing, organization, and characterization, mediated by affective engagement in classroom practices. Most students remained at transitional stages (receiving–responding: 55%), while fewer reached dispositional levels (organization–characterization: 25%). Dialogic interaction, text interpretation, and reflective reasoning facilitate the shift from externally guided responses to internally regulated thinking. This study demonstrates that critical thinking develops through affective internalization rather than cognitive training alone and proposes an integrative model linking affective and cognitive processes. However, this study is limited to a single institutional context, which may affect the generalizability of the findings.

Abstract

This study was prompted by the fact that students’ news writing skills are not yet up to standard, as evidenced by their difficulties in identifying ideas, structuring news articles and using journalistic language, as well as a lack of interaction during lessons. In fact, writing news articles requires not only a grasp of the 5W+1H elements, but also the ability to communicate, collaborate and provide feedback. This study aims to develop a journalism learning model focused on interpersonal intelligence to enhance the news writing skills of students at the University of Muhammadiyah North Sumatra. The study employed a research and development approach with a sample of 25 students. Data were collected through interviews, content expert validation, instructional expert validation, pre-tests and post-tests, and a student feedback questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using both quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods. The research findings indicate that the model developed is highly valid, with a validation rate of 90% among subject matter experts and 90% among learning experts. The model was also effective in improving news writing skills, as demonstrated by the increase in the average pre-test score from 64.5 to 83.8 in the post-test. Furthermore, student feedback on the model was overwhelmingly positive, with 91.65% of respondents expressing approval. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of journalism training with interpersonal skills through discussion, collaboration, presentations and feedback within a systematic, collaborative and contextual model of news writing.

Abstract

This study aims to identify research trends, research gaps, and implications for literature learning development related to character values in Minangkabau culture-based literature. The review is needed due to the fragmented nature of existing studies, which tend to address Minangkabau literature, character values, and instructional practices separately, without a comprehensive synthesis to inform integrated learning design. This study fills this gap by systematically consolidating and critically mapping how character values in Minangkabau literature have been studied and applied in educational contexts. The study uses a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with articles retrieved from Google Scholar (2015–2025). The selection process followed PRISMA guidelines (identification, screening, eligibility, inclusion), resulting in 16 selected studies. Data were analyzed descriptively by categorizing research focus, methods, objects, and findings. Findings show five main themes: oral literature and folklore, learning media and instructional models, modern literature, proverbs, and psychological and comparative approaches. Minangkabau literature consistently contains strong character values relevant to daily social life. However, gaps remain, particularly in integrating character values, literary forms, and cultural contexts, as well as limited use of technology-enhanced learning. In conclusion, beyond mapping trends, this review contributes a synthesized framework linking Minangkabau literary content, character education principles, and pedagogical design. It provides an evidence-based foundation for developing integrated, culturally responsive literature learning models and advances character education scholarship by clarifying how local wisdom can be operationalized into structured, technology-supported learning designs.

Abstract

This study aims to describe gender dynamics in three East Javanese folktales. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with discourse analysis theory and a feminist approach. The data sources used are three folktales from East Java: Dewi Kilisuci, Dewi Sekartaji, and Ken Dedes. The data in this study are descriptions in the folktales related to gender dynamics. The results of the analysis show that female figures in the three tales are not merely passive objects in a patriarchal system, but also as subjects who have a strategic role in changing the direction of power and social values. Dewi Kilisuci displays spiritual and moral power, Dewi Sekartaji embodies political legitimacy through loyalty and cunning, while Ken Dedes represents symbolic power that became the foundation of the birth of a great dynasty. All three show that local mythology not only portrays the position of women in Javanese patriarchal culture, but also opens up space for resistance against male domination through images of purity, wisdom, and sacrifice. These findings are expected to enrich gender studies in regional literature and broaden understanding of symbolic politics in East Javanese oral tradition

Abstract

In the era of digital transformation, innovation in learning methodologies has become a crucial aspect for Islamic educational institutions like MTsN 3 Sragen to maintain instructional quality. However, issues regarding low Arabic learning outcomes among 8th-grade students persist, driven by a reliance on traditional methods and diverse educational backgrounds. This study compares the effectiveness of the TPACK and PWIM models against traditional methods in enhancing learning achievement. Employing a quantitative Quasi-Experimental approach with One-Way ANOVA and N-Gain Score analysis, the results demonstrate that the TPACK model is the most effective, achieving an N-Gain score of 75.98%, surpassing PWIM (60.9%) and traditional methods (38.49%). Consequently, technology integration through TPACK serves as a strategic solution to enhance the efficiency of Arabic language learning in madrasahs.

Abstract

TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms in Indonesia, enabling users to share short videos and engage through comments, likes, and shares. Comments on these videos frequently reflect social judgments and moral evaluations, particularly toward female public figures. The present study investigates the ideological messages represented in hate speech comments against women on TikTok. The data were taken from four Ayu Ting Ting (henceforth, ATT) concert videos uploaded in August 2025, selected for their high engagement and numerous negative comments, in which ATT is a famous Indonesian dangdut singer whose popularity often attracts strong public attention and online reactions. A total of 3,619 comments were analyzed using van Dijk’s Socio-Cognitive Approach (SCA) to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to reveal the relationship among textual content, social cognition, and social context. The analysis found that five dominant ideological themes are expressed through the hate speech comments, namely religiosity, racism or ethnocentrism, gender or sexism, social class or economic inequality, and nationalism or xenophobia. It was also shown that polite, humorous, or sarcastic forms frequently contained hate speech, while moral judgment, social control, and discriminatory meanings were conveyed implicitly. The current study illustrates how social norms, moral expectations, and hierarchical power relations are reproduced in online discourse, showing the ways women are socially regulated and marginalized within digital spaces; therefore, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of implicit hate speech and the reinforcement of social ideologies in Indonesia.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has opened new pathways for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) pedagogy, particularly in the acquisition of technical vocabulary. This study aims to investigate the integration of ChatGPT in enhancing students’ morphological awareness of tourism-related technical terms. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved two groups of tourism students: an experimental group that used ChatGPT-assisted learning and a control group that followed conventional dictionary-based methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests focusing on morphological decomposition and word formation tasks, complemented by semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in identifying derivational affixes and understanding compound words specific to the tourism industry. ChatGPT provided personalized, real-time linguistic explanations, thereby facilitating deeper cognitive processing of complex terminology. The study concludes that AI integration not only enhances morphological competence but also promotes learner autonomy. These results suggest that ESP practitioners should strategically incorporate AI tools to bridge the gap between theoretical linguistics and professional communication in the field of tourism.

Abstract

This study proposes and empirically examines an Emotionally Intelligent Teaching Method (EITM) that integrates Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) principles into EFL pedagogy in Islamic Senior High Schools across Lombok, Indonesia. Drawing on Mayer and Salovey's Emotional Intelligence Theory and CASEL's five SEL competencies, this quasi-experimental mixed-method research involved 120 students and 10 EFL teachers across three schools. The treatment group received 10 weeks of SEL-infused instruction embedded in communicative tasks, reflective journals, and peer interaction, while the control group followed the standard communicative approach. Quantitative data were collected using pre- and post-tests of language performance and emotional intelligence, while qualitative data were drawn from classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student reflective logs. Results revealed significant improvement in both language achievement (Cohen's d = 0.84, p < .01) and emotional intelligence (?² = .27) in the experimental group, compared with minimal changes in the control group. Qualitative findings confirmed that integrating SEL strategies fostered student motivation, empathy, and confidence in language interaction, aligning with the Islamic values of akhlaq (character) and ukhuwah (social harmony). These outcomes underscore that embedding SEL into EFL teaching not only enhances linguistic competence but also cultivates affective and interpersonal dimensions of learning. The study contributes theoretically to ELT by expanding task-based and affective pedagogy models, and practically by providing a replicable framework for emotionally intelligent teaching in religious schooling contexts.

Abstract

The integration of social media into language learning has transformed traditional teaching practices into more interactive and student-centered approaches. One of the most widely used platforms is TikTok, which allows users to create and share short-form videos in creative ways. This study aims to investigate the role of TikTok as a digital stage in enhancing speaking fluency and confidence among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners at the English Department of Institut Pendidikan Nusantara Global (IPNG). This research employed a qualitative descriptive design involving 25 students as participants. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. The findings indicate that the use of TikTok significantly improves students' speaking fluency, including pronunciation, vocabulary usage, and speech coherence. In addition, students reported increased confidence and reduced speaking anxiety due to the opportunity to rehearse and re-record their performances before sharing them. Furthermore, TikTok enhances students' motivation and engagement by providing an enjoyable and interactive learning environment. However, it should be used as a complementary tool alongside traditional teaching methods to ensure optimal learning outcomes. In conclusion, TikTok serves as an effective digital platform that supports the development of speaking skills and confidence among EFL learners.
