Abstract

The transformation of literature from print to digital platforms has altered the ontology of texts and the position of the reader. The Webnovel application introduces real-time interactivity features, such as paragraph-level comments and voting systems, allowing readers to participate directly in the storytelling process. This study aims to analyze the forms of reader interaction and how such interactivity influences narrative construction in digital literature through the lens of reception aesthetics. This study employs a qualitative approach with digital ethnography. Research data, consisting of reader comments and narrative fragments, were purposively sampled from popular ongoing works on the Webnovel app. Analysis was conducted by applying Wolfgang Iser's reception theory, specifically the concept of "indeterminacy" within the digital space. The findings indicate that reader reception on Webnovel is no longer private but rather performative and collective. Active readers fill narrative gaps instantaneously via comment sections, which in turn function as a "compass" for authors in determining plot direction, character consistency, and conflict resolution. This phenomenon marks a shift in narrative authority from a single author to a collaborative negotiation between the writer and the reader community. Interactivity on digital platforms has birthed a new aesthetic in literature, where the text becomes a fluid entity that is constantly evolving based on social dynamics in cyberspace.

Abstract

This study is grounded in the growing urgency to utilize podcasts as a promising digital medium in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction in Indonesia, particularly for fostering students’ critical thinking skills. The study aims to explore the experiences of students at MA Terpadu Al Hidayah Sumenep in using podcasts and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in the development of critical thinking through this activity. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participant observation, and document analysis. Thematic analysis revealed that podcasts contributed to three major dimensions of critical thinking: more structured argument construction, more selective evaluation of evidence and information, and deeper metacognitive reflection. Although the extent of development varied among students, podcasts proved to be an effective medium for encouraging participation, collaboration, and critical awareness in EFL learning. These findings affirm that the integration of digital media can bridge religious-based educational traditions with the demands of 21st-century skills, while also offering practical implications for English teachers in designing more participatory and reflective learning experiences.

Abstract

The podcast phenomenon is one of the most popular forms of media in today’s digital world. Podcasts serve as a medium of communication in various contexts, such as entertainment, education, and news. In this context, speech acts and the use of politeness strategies play a crucial role in the interaction between guests and hosts. This study examines illocutionary meaning in podcast interactions as a communication strategy. Illocutionary speech acts refer to social actions performed through speech, such as stating, requesting, or promising, which go beyond the literal meaning of the words used (Bach & Harnish, 1979). The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this study consist of podcasts on the topic of teenage victims of bullying on social media. Analysis of 531 utterances across two podcast episodes revealed that constative acts dominated the guest’s turns (88.36–90%), while directive acts dominated the host’s turns (63.15–73.94%). These findings suggest that podcast hosts heavily rely on asking questions and offering advice to steer emotionally sensitive conversations, thereby offering practical implications for responsible language use in digital media. These findings offer practical implications for podcast content creators to adopt polite and empathetic language strategies in digital media discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an ethnolinguistic model to integrate local wisdom of Malang Regency into language conservation strategies as an effort to ensure cultural sustainability in the era of modernization. The challenges of globalization threaten the sustainability of regional languages, especially among the younger generation, so a comprehensive approach that integrates local wisdom into conservation strategies is needed. The study used a systematic literature review method of 45 Indonesian ethnolinguistic publications for the period 2014-2025 which were analyzed thematically covering ethnolinguistic concepts, manifestations of local wisdom, conservation strategies, and challenges of modernization. The results show that local wisdom is manifested in five main forms: ritual terminology, toponymy, pantun and proverbs, traditional economic practices, and ecological knowledge. Ethnolinguistics provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding the intrinsic relationship between language and culture, but most research is still descriptive with limitations in the development of practical intervention models. The proposed ethnolinguistic model is built on five pillars: participatory documentation, contextual revitalization, intergenerational transmission, adaptive technology, and institutional sustainability. This model makes a theoretical contribution by expanding ethnolinguistics from a descriptive analytical tool to a practical intervention paradigm, and also provides a practical roadmap for developing contextual and sustainable language conservation policies. The research confirms that the preservation of regional languages cannot be separated from the preservation of local wisdom as a whole as an investment in the sustainability of the nation's cultural identity.
