Abstract

Emotions play a crucial role in human life as they influence the way individuals think, feel, and develop. However, studies that examine emotional conflict in animated films through a literary psychology perspective remain limited. This study analyzes the emotional conflict experienced by Riley, the protagonist of Inside Out (2015), focusing on the interactions among her core emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis explores how the film represents Riley’s emotional struggles as she undergoes significant life changes, particularly her relocation to a new city and adaptation to an unfamiliar environment. The findings reveal that Riley’s emotional conflict reflects common psychological challenges faced by children in understanding and balancing their emotions. The film emphasizes the importance of both positive and negative emotions in personal growth, adaptation, and self-understanding. In conclusion, Inside Out not only offers an engaging narrative but also provides meaningful insight into emotional development and identity formation through the lens of literary psychology.

Abstract

Grammar instruction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context is frequently perceived as anxiety-inducing and monotonous, particularly when learning is dominated by rule memorization and form-focused explanations. This issue is especially critical for pre-service English teachers, as their experiences as learners may influence their future teaching practices. Although gamification has been widely adopted to enhance engagement in grammar learning, many existing practices rely on surface-level mechanics such as points and quizzes, offering limited support for deep cognitive processing. To address this gap, this study conducted a needs analysis to examine pre-service English teachers’ perspectives on grammar instruction and their readiness for meaningful gamified learning. Employing a descriptive quantitative survey design, data were collected from 49 undergraduate students from English Education and English Literature programs who had completed grammar courses. The questionnaire explored grammar anxiety, digital readiness, flow potential, and gamification design preferences, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings reveal a moderate level of grammar anxiety and a notable gap between grammatical knowledge and its application in communication. At the same time, participants demonstrated high digital readiness and strong potential for immersive engagement. Importantly, they expressed a clear preference for deep, narrative-based gamification rather than quiz-oriented activities. These findings suggest that pre-service English teachers are cognitively and psychologically prepared for a deep-learning-oriented gamified grammar model, providing a foundation for future model development in teacher education contexts. Keywords: grammar anxiety, gamification, pre-service English teachers, needs analysis, grammar instruction

Abstract

This study aims to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an ensemble-based learning model in English language learning for vocational students majoring in Angklung and Bamboo Music. The research method used was classroom action research (CAR) conducted in two learning cycles. Data were collected through observation, reflection, and pretest–posttest to assess the development of students' language skills. The analysis showed an increase in average grades and student participation, although not very significant when calculated as a whole (average N-Gain <0.1). However, when only active students were counted, there was a more pronounced increase, with average attendance increasing from 67% to 70%. Qualitatively, students showed improvements in cooperation, self-confidence, and communication skills in a musical context. These findings indicate that ensemble-based learning is effective in increasing student engagement and motivation, especially for those who actively participate. This approach is relevant for vocational education because it is able to integrate elements of musicality with English communication in a contextual and creative manner. Keywords: ensemble-based learning, classroom action research, music vocational education, English for specific purpose

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing illocutionary speech acts found in the Daebak Show Season 2, Episode 5, Part 1 podcast. The purpose of this research is to identify the types and functions of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s (1979) classification. The data were collected using a descriptive qualitative method by watching and transcribing the podcast episode, taking detailed notes, and classifying the utterances produced by the host, Eric Nam, and the guest, Jackson Wang. The analysis was conducted by categorizing each utterance according to its illocutionary force and communicative function within the conversational context. The findings reveal four types of illocutionary acts: assertives, directives, commissives, and expressives. Among these, assertive acts appeared as the most dominant type, indicating that the podcast discourse primarily functions as a medium for sharing information, opinions, and personal experiences. Declarative acts were not found in the data, as the podcast setting lacks the institutional authority required to perform such acts. This study contributes to pragmatic studies by highlighting the characteristics of illocutionary acts in podcast discourse.

Abstract

AbstractLeft indent:1.5 cm  Right indent: 1.5 cm  Language functions as a powerful diplomatic instrument that conveys persuasion, solidarity, and moral commitment in international communication. However, previous studies on speech acts in political discourse have primarily focused on Western leaders, leaving a gap in understanding how Southeast Asian leaders employ English pragmatically in peace diplomacy. This study examines the pragmatic functions of persuasion and solidarity through speech acts in President Prabowo Subianto’s 2025 address to the United Nations General Assembly. Grounded in Searle’s speech act theory and informed by pragmatic frameworks of persuasion and solidarity (van Dijk, 1997; Chilton & Schäffner, 2002), this research explores how linguistic actions embody Indonesia’s peace-oriented stance and humanitarian values. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, both the transcript and audiovisual data of the speech were analyzed to identify directive, commissive, and expressive acts that perform persuasive and solidarity functions. The findings reveal that President Prabowo’s address integrates assertive appeals with empathy, repetition of peace-oriented imperatives, and inclusive pronouns that foster shared moral responsibility across audiences. These strategies demonstrate how English operates as an instrument of intercultural diplomacy and ethical communication, articulating Indonesia’s moral voice in global affairs. The study contributes to pragmatic research on peace discourse by broadening the understanding of how non-Western leaders use language to balance persuasion, empathy, and cooperation through ethical and intercultural pragmatics. Keywords: speech acts, persuasion, solidarity, peace diplomacy, pragmatic ethics

Abstract

This study examines the phonological patterns in J. R. R. Tolkien’s poem The Shadow Man and analyzes how these sound structures shape the poem’s rhythm, atmosphere, and interpretive meaning. Grounded in Jakobson’s (1987) concept of the poetic function, which highlights sound repetition and equivalence as central to poetic expression, this research identifies five dominant sound patterns— alliteration, assonance, consonance, repetition, and rhyme—based on theoretical insights from Abrams (1999) and Yule (2017). Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the analysis explores how these patterns operate across the poem’s three stanzas and contribute to its stylistic coherence. The findings show that Tolkien employs patterned sound structures deliberately to intensify mood, guide thematic progression, and unify the poem’s imagery. Alliteration and consonance construct tonal atmosphere, assonance enriches emotional quality, repetition reinforces cohesion, and rhyme establishes musical continuity. The study demonstrates that phonological patterning plays a central role in Tolkien’s poetic style and offers an essential linguistic perspective for interpreting how the poem conveys emotion, symbolism, and narrative movement.
