Abstract

CEFR has become a very significant framework for the design of language curricula and the assessment of language learning outcomes. The purpose of the study is to know the CEFR level of the graduate candidate at the Tertiary Level of Education. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researchers took the data from Computer Science Faculty graduate candidates Universitas Duta Bangsa Surakarta in the academic year 2021/2022. There were 359 participants, 346 participants took the test, and 13 participants did not take test. The participant took TOEIC-Like test written by Shin’s book (2015) titled Pre-Intermediate Level Taking the TOEIC: Skills and Strategies, practice test one. The study showed that the highest TOEIC score was 930, and the participant was from the Technical Information study program. Based on TOEIC Test Mapping on the CEFR, the participant was at C1 level or mastery level. There were 12 participants at the B2 level or Vantage Level, and there were 35 participants at the B1 Level. Most participants were at the A2 level or Basic user because 241 participants got a 225-545 TOEIC score (A2) and there were 57 participants at the A1 level.

Abstract

Incorporating arts in pedagogy has been studied and reported to be able to support students’ achievement; however, the studies of integrating arts in the English language learning especially in higher education in Indonesia remain low. This paper focuses on the recent literature review of arts integration within English language learning and how it has been implemented globally. The articles are then analyzed based on the forms of arts, the implementation, and the learners’ responses. Lastly, by reflecting the review results to Indonesian settings, the researcher reveals opportunities and ideas of integrating arts within English teaching learning in Indonesia that may have been neglected before.

Abstract

The role of linguistic intelligent in learning a foreign language particularly in writing skill has received increased attention across a number of disciplines in recent years. This study aims to investigate the correlation between linguistic intelligence and students' ability to write descriptive texts. This quantitative research was conducted at a vocational high school in Central Java, Indonesia in January 2022. The data was collected through a questionnaire instrument and a descriptive text writing test of 80 samples from 394 populations. The data analysis technique employed product moment and descriptive analysis using SPSS. The result of the study shows the significance value obtained from the product moment correlation = 0.528 and the significance value 0.000 < probability 0.05, which means the hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the hypothesis in this study (Ha) was accepted. Based on the statistical analysis, this study concluded that there was a correlation between students’ linguistic intelligence and the ability of writing descriptive text.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know insatiable behavior in the “Necklace” and its connection to social media consumerism The methodology of this study is a qualitative research method. The primary source of data is the “Necklace” short story, and the secondary source of the data is the dialogue, and action done by the main character. The result of this study shows that insatiable behaviors can be seen from the character Mme. Loisel. Her insatiable behaviors comes from her dissatisfaction about life. She's trying so hard to look like those who come from upper class society. Her jealousy on her friend, led her to the insatiable desire and her consumerism behavior. This behavior has connection to modern day's consumerism behavior.

Abstract

Reflection has recently been used in adult learning evaluation due to its humanistic value. However, in spite of its benefits, self-reflection has weaknesses for it is unshared. Self-reflection needs to be shared to colleagues, to be social reflection, so that it will be more beneficial for self-trough receiving feedback from others while others could also learn from it. Therefore, this article is going to report the study conducted to develop social reflection model to improve the teachers' competence. The model proposed is in the form of conceptual and iconic. The study employed R&D method proposed by Borg & Gall (1983). However, only parts of the steps were taken due to some limitations, those are research and information collecting, planning, developing preliminary product, and preliminary field testing, and main product revision. The result of the preliminary field testing shows that the model needs improvement.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate students' perceptions of the application of Collaborative Learning in practicing English speaking skills and to investigate the extent of the effect of Collaborative Learning on students' English speaking skills. This research was conducted at Duta Bangsa University, Surakarta. Respondents in this study were lecturers of English courses who used Collaborative Learning as one of their teaching techniques and second semester students of Universitas Duta Bangsa Surakarta. The application of collaborative learning techniques to students at Duta Bangsa University Surakarta has   provided space for students to improve their English skills. Although nsignificant, the application of this technique cannot be considered a failure.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the representation of woman as femme fatale in Lamb to the Slaughter. The research methods of this study is a qualitative research method. The primary source of data is the Lamb to the Slaughter short story, and the secondary source of the data is the main character Mary Malony. The result of this study shows that Mary became as a femme fatale is actually triggered by the conflict that occur between her and her husband. Knowing the fact that her beloved husband asks for a divorce when she is pregnant is not the right time. Mary, who is originally an innocent and normal wife, suddenly turns into a dangerous woman.

Abstract

This article provides the educational meaning of the Bad Genius movie. This study aims to provide an analysis and understanding of educational values in the Bad Genius movie. Our research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The results of this study indicate that the values of character education in the Bad Genius film are very useful and can have a positive impact in the field of education. There are 5 cultural values namely :honest, peace of ability, self - discipline, love & affection, respect, kindness & friendliness.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of picture as a medium to improve the skills of writing Descriptive at English Study Program, Faculty of Law and Business Duta Bangsa University Surakarta academic year 2021/2022. Research design is action research. Data collection in this study was carried out by means of conducting observations, individual written tests at the end of learning,. Analytical techniques data using descriptive analysis quantitative. Based on the analysis the results evaluation before and after using picture from cycle I to cycle II can be concluded that the learning of Descriptive Writing by using picture can improve student learning outcomes

Abstract

This research on Code-Mixing focuses on language development in the Clara Mongstar and Gold Ranger YouTube videos. The data from this research is the YouTube video of Clara Mongstar and the Gold Ranger in 2020. In addition, the purpose of this research is to find out the use of the language on Youtube. The data collection technique used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Meanwhile, the results found were in the form of the audience's language style from the video they watched. It was found that there were several types of codemixing used by Clara Mongstar in its implementation.
