UNIVERSE is a peer reviewed and scientific journal published by Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) in collaboration that publishes twice a year. This journal aim is to publish articles include opinions, insights, analysis and research report from various kind of research, such as experimental, descriptive, research and development (R&D), and action research on Education. UNIVERSE is a journal that publishes only an original articles on the newest issues occuring internationally in science education, science teaching and learning, science curriculum, and science teachers preparation with special purpose to improve our knowledge of science education, teaching, learning and practice. This journal also has a number of specific objectives in several fields: 1. Teaching In teaching activities, it is not only focused on the lecturer, but also on the teacher in the class. The application and development of learning models, the application and development of instructional media, the development and application of textbooks, the development and application of new treatments to students and all teaching activities with the aim of increasing motivation, ability, skills and mindset both by the teacher, and the students. 2. Learning Research in the form of a process, description, treatment or development in the field of learning. Learning activities both nationally and internationally, from a variety of perspectives and mindsets. 3. Practice In practice we invite papers that related to any activities indoors, outdoors. Theoretically, empirically and practically. Experimental and quasi-experimental practice research. Research at school, in the field, to teachers, to students, or to the community. The latest issue, news, and fact. 4. Science Curriculum In the field of curriculum, we invite articles that focus on the application or development of national and international curricula. Methods for applying curriculum or assessments, tools, and media used as support in the implementation or development of the curriculum.

Abstract

The Kurikulum Merdeka provides freedom for schools, educators and students to innovate, learn creatively and independently. Then, along with the technology development, teachers are also demanded to innovate materials for teaching to help the process of learning in related with the curriculum. The results of observations in the field shown that the material for teaching used have few practice questions related to daily life and the material is quite dense, so teaching materials are needed that contain more questions related to daily life. To overcome this problem, the innovation provided is an Integrated Science E-module Oriented to Problem Based Learning. The research aims are to produce an Integrated Science E-Module Oriented to Problem Based Learning on Organ System Material that is has validity and practicality to use for class VIII SMP students. The research type used is research and development (R&D), using a 4-D model which have 4 phases, that are define, design, develop and disseminate. However, the research just conducted until the development phase. The instruments in this research were a validation questionnaire sheet and a practicality questionnaire sheet. The test of validity results obtained a value of 83.43% in the category in very valid. The test of practicality results by the teacher obtained a score of 98.61% in the category in very practical and the test of practicality results by students obtained a score of 89.51% in the category in very practical. According on these results, the conclusion that the Integrated Science E-Module with Problem Based Learning Orientation on Organ System Material has met the valid and practical category for use by class VIII SMP students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the description of students' learning independence after using the RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, Create) learning model in learning science in energy material. This research was analyzed using a quantitative approach with descriptive methods. The instrument used to measure students' learning independence is a learning independence questionnaire using positive statements. The learning independence of students has been achieved by 26 students with a percentage of 87%. Learners who do not depend on others as much as 83%, are responsible for their duties as much as 83%, have 93% self-confidence, have 87% discipline, act on their own initiative as much as 90%, and are able to control themselves as much as 83%.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the influence of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on the science literacy skills of seventh-grade students in ecology subject at SMP Negeri 27 Medan. The research method employed was quantitative with a sample of 64 students from classes VII-6 and VII-5, selected using purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was a science literacy test, with the independent variable being the teaching model (PBL and direct instruction) and the dependent variable being the students' science literacy skills. The results of the research indicate that the implementation of the PBL model has a significant influence on the science literacy skills of seventh-grade students in class VII-6. Initially, the science literacy skills of students in class VII-6 were at level 2 with a score of 37.50, classified as insufficient. However, after the implementation of the PBL model, the science literacy skills increased to level 4 with a score of 69.58, classified as sufficient. In conclusion, the application of the PBL model was effective in improving the science literacy skills of students in ecology subject at class VII-6 of SMP Negeri 27 Medan. This finding provides important implications for the development of problem-oriented learning approaches to enhance students' science literacy.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the video-assisted PBL learning model on students' science literacy skills on vibration and wave materials. This research used quasi experiment with Pretest and Posttest Control Group Design. Sampling was done by Random Sampling technique. The sample in this study consisted of 2 classes, namely class VIII-4 (Experiment Class) with PBL Learning model assisted by Video and VIII-5 (Control Class) with Conventional learning model. Data collection with tests and documentation. The average data of pretest and posttest learning outcomes in the experimental class were 34.84 and 63.87, respectively, and in the control class 25.06 and 42.96. Data were analyzed with Independent Sample t-test using SPSS Version 21. Based on hypothesis testing, it was found that the PBL learning model assisted by video was effective in using the science literacy skills of students on vibration and wave material in class VIII SMP Negeri 27 Medan in the 2023/2024 academic year. In the experimental class, the achievement of the learning level after being treated with the Video-Assisted PBL model was achieved with an experimental class N-gain value of 45% in the sufficient category. And in the control class using the conventional model, the N-gain obtained was 24% with a very low category.

Abstract

One of the efforts made to overcome the problems contained in practicum activities in schools is to design and develop a science practicum module integrated STEM using ethnoscience approach. The STEM integrated practicum module is able to train student skills because students can experience the learning process directly. The use of the ethnoscience approach in the practicum module can introduce facts and phenomena that can be explained scientifically. In general, the aim of this research is to produce an science practicum module integrated STEM using ethnoscience approach that valid and practical to use. The type of research used is Research and Development (R&D). The research method used in the 3 stages of a the ADDIE, namely analysis, design, and development. The research instrument consisted of a validity and practicality test questionnaire. The results of the development stage indicate that the practicum module is valid with the validity test value given by the expert validator of 0,82. Practicum module in practical category with a questionnaire value of 0,89 teacher responses and 0,85 students responses. The results showed that science practicum module integrated STEM using ethnoscience approach can be used with valid and practical categories.

Abstract

Ideally, science does not only focus on cognitive aspects, but includes attitudes and skills. The implementation of practicum activities aims to improve student skills, cannot be separated from the avalilability of teaching materials that used as a guide in practicum activities. This study purpose to produce a valid and practice science practicum module STEM integratedly on light topics with realistic approach. This research is urgent because produce teaching material that helps teacher and student to assist the practicum activities and can help student to understand the concepts through realistic approach. This is Research and Development (R&D) with three stages of the ADDIE model, namely Analysis; Design; and Development. The result shows the science practicum module STEM integratedly on light topics with realistic approach was valid and practice. Valid and practice means that the teaching material are feasible and easy for use in the learning process. Based on the results, it can be concluded that scince practicum module STEM integratedly on light topics with realistic approach can be used as teaching material that supports practicum activities.

Abstract

The 21st century, revolution industry 4.0, and the 2013 curriculum require students to be able to take advantage of information and communication technology and require students to be more active in learning, as well as student-centered learning. However, in reality the students have not been active in learning and the learning time for energy material in living systems has not been effective. One solution to this problem is to implement an integrated science interactive e-module integrated with ethnoscience so that students can learn actively and independently. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an integrated science interactive e-module integrated with ethnoscience on energy material in living systems that is significant for class VII student learning outcomes. This type of research is a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design. The experimental class used an integrated science interactive e-module integrated with ethnoscience, while the control class used printed teaching materials. The results of the data analysis show that there is an effect of the implementation of an integrated Ethnoscience integrated science interactive e-module on energy material in living systems that is significant for class VII student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low student learning outcomes in science learning at 8th grade in Secondary School 34 Padang. It caused by the science learning process is still teacher-centered so that students are less active in the learning process. This study aims to find out how much influence of the cooperative model type think-pair-share assisted by crossword puzzles on students' cognitive abilities. The method used is a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent posttest only control group design. The population of this study was all students of 8th grade in Secondary School 34 Padang that consisted of 9 classes. The samples of this study were 32 students of class VIII-A and 30 students of class VIII-B. The sampling technique was done by purposive sampling technique. The results of the data analysis was carried out by using SPSS version 25 application which carried out by using a hypothesis test with independent sample t-test. The test results, a sig (2-tailed) value of 0.004 <0.05 which means is rejected and is accepted. It can be concluded that the cooperative model type think-pair-share assisted by crossword puzzles has an influence on students' cognitive abilities of students at Secondary School 34 Padang.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the results of observations of 7th grade students at SMPN 29 Padang for the 2021/2022 academic year. It is known that there are still many students who in the learning process are less active and cooperate with each other. Student learning outcomes are classified as low with an average below the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) of 80. Teacher apply teacher centered learning methods in the learning process. This study aims to determine the increase in student learning outcomes with the Guided Inquiry learning model on the material Temperature, heat and expansion. This research was conducted at SMPN 29 Padang for the 2022/2023 school year. The samples in this study were 32 students of class VII.6 and 32 students of class VII.7. This type of research is quasi-experimental research with a non-equivalent control group design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The research instrument used a test instrument in the form of an objective test of 30 questions. Data analysis used the normality test, homogeneity test and parametric test, namely the t test to see an increase in student learning outcomes. The results showed that there was an increase between before and after the application of the Guided Inquiry learning model where t count was greater than t table, namely 7.62 > 1.67.

Abstract

The implementation of the learning process in the 2013 curriculum uses a scientific approach. Ideally, learning using a scientific approach should be accompanied by a high interest in reading. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of the Reading to Learn (R2L) model on students' cognitive abilities in the topic of the human digestive system. The type of study used in this research is quantitative research with the research method being quasi-experimental design (Quasi Experimental Design). Pretest-Posttest Nonequivalent Control Group Design was used in this research. The population in this study were all grade VIII students of SMPN 29 Padang who were enrolled in the 2022/2023 academic year. The sample was carried out by purposive sampling technique. Data on student cognitive ability in this study are pretest scores, posttest scores and gain scores. Based on data analysis with the t test, the results show that tcount> ttable, so that there is a significant influence on the application of the Reading to Learn learning model on students' cognitive abilitiy.
