Abstract

The garment industry is one of the fastest-paced production environments, where speed and accuracy are crucial for meeting global customer demand. Cycle time plays an important role in satisfying the speed factor as it represents the overall time needed to produce a single piece of a product. Maintaining an appropriate cycle time is key to achieving production line balance. This study aims to analyze the cycle time of men's jacket production on a sewing line in an Indonesian garment industry by comparing the actual cycle time with the standard cycle time based on the operation breakdown for each production process step. Four significant discrepancies in actual cycle time were identified, ranging from 16% to 95%, indicating that the actual cycle time was significantly longer than the standard cycle time. The root cause of the highest cycle time was analyzed using Fishbone and 5 Whys analysis to understand the problem from each factor and sub-factor. Six improvement action plans were proposed and implemented, resulting in a 57.81% reduction in actual cycle time, from 127.66 seconds to 53.85 seconds, making it 17.66% faster than the standard cycle time. Furthermore, the total output per hour increased by approximately 216.67%, from 12 pieces to 38 pieces. This result implies that the study successfully identified the root of the problem on the sewing line and managed to increase production output.

Abstract

This study examines the factors influencing students' decisions in selecting boarding houses in Surabaya, an increasingly critical issue as demand for student housing rises post-pandemic. A mixed-method approach was employed, beginning with open-ended questionnaires to identify broad preferences, followed by closed-ended questionnaires to rank key factors. Factor analysis using SPSS revealed three dominant factors: security and environment (33.79%), location and price (22.19%), and facilities (20.47%). Among these, security and environment emerged as the most influential, underscoring the importance of safety and a clean, comfortable setting. Location and price ranked second, with students favoring affordable boarding houses near campuses and essential services. Facilities, including high-speed internet and clean sanitation, also significantly impacted decisions. These findings offer practical insights for boarding house owners to prioritize safety measures, enhance cleanliness, and improve facilities to attract students. While the results align with existing literature on housing preferences, this study is limited by its sample size and focus on Surabaya, which may not generalize to other contexts. Future research could explore additional factors such as parking availability or shared amenities and extend the analysis to other cities for comparative insights. This research contributes to understanding student housing preferences and offers actionable recommendations for managing boarding houses in urban educational hubs.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study seeks to assess the efficacy of plant-based waste extracts, namely orange peel extract and tea waste extract, as natural corrosion inhibitors for mild steel submerged in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The methodology adhered to ASTM G31 standards, employing mild steel specimens coated with each extract using three application techniques: brushing, immersion, and spraying. The weight loss method was used to measure corrosion rates (Mmpy), enabling the calculation of inhibition efficiency (IE%) for each specimen. The uncoated control specimen consistently exhibited the highest corrosion rate (3.4523 Mmpy), categorized as "Poor." Specimens treated with orange peel extract showed significantly lower corrosion rates, with the brushing method yielding an inhibition efficiency of 98.7%, categorized as "Excellent." Likewise, specimens coated with tea waste extract demonstrated remarkable inhibition, with the brushing and immersion techniques achieving efficiencies of 98.9% and 97.7%, respectively. These results indicate that both orange peel and tea waste extracts serve as promising, eco-friendly alternatives for corrosion protection of mild steel, with their effectiveness significantly influenced by the method of application.
