Abstract

Background: Organic waste management in rural areas remains a significant challenge, where household and agricultural waste accounts for approximately 65% of total waste volume, contributing to environmental degradation and increasing greenhouse gas emissions.Aims: This Community Service Program aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Effective Microorganisms 4 (EM4) in converting organic waste into compost in Garahan Village, Silo District, Jember Regency. Methods: The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving 50 households. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and physicochemical analyses conducted during a 21-day fermentation process consisting of anaerobic and aerobic stages. Results: The results demonstrated that the application of EM4 significantly enhanced the waste decomposition process. The final compost achieved a stable temperature of 35°C on the third day, a neutral pH of 6.8, a nitrogen content of 1.8%, and a C/N ratio of 25:1. The program reduced waste volume by 65%, achieved an 85% community participation rate, and produced compost that met the SNI 19-7030-2004 standard. These findings support the implementation of a sustainable bioremediation model that reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers and contributes to the achievement of SDGs 11 and 12.

Abstract

Background: Lerep Tourism Village is a developed tourist village in Semarang Regency, focusing not only on the production of locally sourced goods but also as a center for education, recreation, and local wisdom. The lack of promotion of homestays in Lerep has prompted attention to introduce products and services through a hands-on learning concept in the village and to promote the village as a tourist destination with a unique tourism concept.Aims: The aim of this community service activity is to improve hospitality skills and homestay management in Lerep tourist village. Methods: This community service is carried out in July 2025 in Lerep Village, Ungaran, Semarang Regency through hospitality management training. 30 homestay owners joined, starting from preparation, focus group discussion, implementation, follow up phase, and content on service management literacy. Results: The results showed implementation of practice training with homestay owners are not only theory, but more practice is the best solution to engage with customers to develop hospitality skills. Practical training is urgently needed to improve the hospitality skills of homestay owners, with product and service innovation as the main priority to create uniqueness and enhance guest satisfaction. Additional support through technology implementation, mentoring and evaluation, sustainability programs, and innovations in marketing, management, and operational processes will strengthen the competitiveness of homestays in Lerep Tourism Village.

Abstract

Background: The incidence of hypertension in Banyumas Regency in 2023 was 172,022 people. Rawalo District, specifically Sanggreman Village, ranked eighth in terms of the number of hypertension cases among the productive age group, with 105 people with hypertension.Aims: This activity aims to provide interventions for the prevention and control of hypertension in the productive age group through extension and counseling using flipchart media and anti-hypertension exercises. Methods: This intervention was implemented at a community health post (Posbindu) with 55 people with hypertension. The activity began with a questionnaire for the Pre-test, followed by socialization using flipcharts and anti-hypertension exercises, and concluded with a Post-test. This activity used a pre-experimental approach with a one-group pre-post test design. The sampling technique used accidental sampling. The Pre-test and Post-test methods were used to measure the level of knowledge and attitudes before and after the intervention. Results: The results of a bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon test on the knowledge and attitude variables for hypertension prevention and control interventions in the productive age group yielded a p-value of 0.000 <0.05. This means that the intervention, through socialization and counseling using flipcharts and anti-hypertension exercises, was deemed successful, as knowledge and attitudes improved. There was a significant increase in the difference between the mean Pre-test and Post-test scores, namely 2.15 for the knowledge variable and 1.71 for the attitude variable. This indicates that people with hypertension were able to receive the information provided well through flipchart media. Anti-hypertension exercise is an example of a positive physical activity that can be easily performed by patients as a preventive effort. It is recommended that anti-hypertension exercise and flipcharts be used as health education media to reduce the incidence of hypertension in Sanggreman Village, Rawalo District.

Abstract

Background: Bulotalangi Timur Village is dominated by vegetable farmers who rely heavily on chemical fertilizers, making them vulnerable to fertilizer shortages that can negatively affect crop productivity. Although organic fertilizers derived from organic waste offer a sustainable alternative, farmers’ knowledge and skills regarding their production and application remain limited.Aims: This activity aimed to improve farmers’ knowledge and skills in producing liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) from organic waste as an environmentally friendly approach to enhance crop productivity and support sustainable village development.Method: The activity was conducted in Bulotalangi Timur Village, Bulango Timur District, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province, in October 2023. It consisted of three stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation. The implementation employed training methods that combined socialization and participatory demonstrations to facilitate hands-on learning. Results: The training program was implemented smoothly and received a very positive response from participants, as indicated by their high level of enthusiasm and satisfaction. Participants expressed a strong expectation for the continuation of similar activities in the future. However, several challenges were identified, including limited initial awareness of organic waste utilization and scheduling constraints that led to relatively low participation rates.

Abstract

Background: Bananas are among the most important horticultural commodities in Indonesia. In West Java, Purwakarta is a center of banana production. Farmers rely on traditional propagation and production methods, resulting in low yields and productivity. The main problem for banana farmers is the lack of seed availability, where almost no farmer used seed from tissue culture and only 10% of the respondent did not know about post-harvest processing technology.Aims: The aim of this activity is to improve the skills of farmers in the propagation of banana plants by in vitro culture, banana production, and post-harvest technology. This activity took place in Wanasari, Purwakarta City. Methods: The methodology for these activities was to deliver lectures and conduct practice sessions with farmers on banana propagation, production, and postharvest technology. Additionally, we provided them with a banana plant from in vitro culture.Result: The community service activity showed that the farmers were highly interested and enthusiastic about the technology introduced to them with increasing the post-test score of those audiences. The participants' enthusiasm and confidence in implementing banana cultivation and post-harvest techniques demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of the training methods in supporting banana cultivation. This work is expected to empower farmers to manage their gardens and post-harvest banana handling, thereby contributing to economic resilience and food security.
