Abstract

The phenomena of multilingualism influence how an individual constructs their identity, as language is one aspect of who they are. This study aims to investigate how five English college students view multilingualism and how it affects their sense of self. Semi-structured interviews were used as an instrument to collect the data, and it was found that their loyalty towards the local and national languages remains strong despite their exposure to the use of EFL in their daily lives. As multilingual speakers, the participants know the importance of maintaining their native language as their identity marker. Nonetheless, they agreed that being exposed to English changed their self-concept. These results demonstrate that appropriate sociocultural experience in language learning is essential.

The results were analyzed using inductive analysis by dividing the findings into two main themes, the challenges and the benefits experienced by the teacher and students. The research shows that major challenges that students and the teacher faced, included difficulties with resource accessibility, technical proficiency, time allocation, and preparation stage. As for the benefits, the results point to enhanced communication creativity, improved critical thinking abilities, accommodated differences in student learning styles, and increased engagement among students as essential advantages. In conclusion, integrating multimodal text in GBA provides more benefits than challenges for both the teacher and students. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of student engagement shown by students in the English Language Course. The second objective is to find out the factors that influence student engagement. This research was conducted on 8th grade students at Garut High School. To achieve these objectives, qualitative research with a case study design was used with observation and interview data collection techniques. The sample for this study consisted of 35 students. Out of all the participants, three participated in the interview. The results showed that there were three types of student engagement found, namely cognitive engagement, behavioral engagement, and affective engagement. It was found that the most dominant type was cognitive engagement. The results also show that the five factors presented by Fredricks, Blumenfeld, and Paris (2004) influence student engagement in English language courses. The five factors are: school level, teacher support, peers, classroom structure, and task characteristics.

Abstract

This study delved into the realm of expressive speech acts within stand-up comedy, with a specific focus on Raditya Dika's "Cerita Cintaku" YouTube series. Drawing from John Searle's theoretical framework, which encompassed emotion-showing, mood-indicating, aesthetic judgment, and expressive vocabulary, the research explored the intricate dynamics of linguistic choices and audience responses. Employing a qualitative case study approach, two selected videos were analyzed to unravel the nuanced use of expressive speech acts. The findings shed light on Raditya Dika's comedic craft, emphasizing the interplay between expressive speech, emotional expression, and inherent humor. The abstract underscored the specificity of linguistic elements, provided insights into the chosen methodology, and articulated the interface between Searle's theory and the empirical findings. This research contributed to a deeper understanding of the role of expressive speech in stand-up comedy, offering a unique perspective on audience engagement and comedic impact.

Abstract

This study aimed to finding comparative of the audio and video media that are used in the school to know the significant difference between students’ listening comprehension by using video and audio on learning process. The research used a quantitative method approach which use comparative design. Population of this study research was 64 students and the samples were 30 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used listening test. Based on the finding of the research, the conclusions can be explained that the first and the second test has different topic and both test has different result of hypothesis testing, which in the first test that discussed the topic about some dialogues and conversations, the t-test value was 13.00 and t-table for n = 58 in level of significant α = 0.05 was 2.00. Because of t-test > t-table (13.15 > 2.00), it means that there is a significant difference between the students listening comprehension by using video and audio. Meanwhile in the second test which discussed the topic from cut movie, the t-test value was -10.15 and t-table was 2.00. Because of t-test < t-table (-10.15 < 2.00), it means that there is not a significant difference between the students listening comprehension by using video and audio. The result of this research shows that video is a better media than audio to be applied on students‟ listening comprehension, therefore the implementation of this research expects the teachers/ lecturers to use video as learning media in teaching listening especially in listening comprehension.

Abstract

New teaching methods have led to the changes in the teachers’ roles in an English class, in which teachers’ error correction is an integral part. Language error and corrective feedback have been the interest of many researchers in foreign language teaching. However, the techniques and the effectiveness of teachers’ feedback have been a question of much controversy. This present case study has been carried out with a view to finding out the patterns of teachers’ corrective feedback and their impact on students’ uptake in English speaking lessons of legal English major students at a Law University. In order to achieve those aims, the study makes use of classroom observations as the main method of data collection to seeks answers to the two following questions: 1. What patterns of corrective feedback occur in English speaking lessons for legal English major students in a Law University? 2. To what extent does that corrective feedback lead to students’ uptake? The study provided some important findings, among which was a close relationship between corrective feedback and uptake. In particular, recast was the most commonly used feedback type, yet it was the least effective in terms of students’ uptake and repair, while the most successful feedback, namely meta- linguistic feedback, clarification requests and elicitation, which led to students’ generated repair, was used at a much lower rate by teachers. Furthermore, it revealed that different types of errors needed different types of feedback. Also, the use of feedback depended on the students’ English proficiency level. In the light of findings, a number of pedagogical implications have been drawn in the hope of enhancing the effectiveness of teachers’ corrective feedback to students’ uptake in foreign language acquisition process.

Abstract

The massive popularity of K-Pop currently regards as one of the world's most popular. As a result, the researcher was drawn to the Bangtan Boys (BTS) music videos entitled We Are Bulletproof Pt.2 and Boy With Luv (feat. Halsey). This study aims to find out what kind of masculinity BTS Boy Band built and how they portrayed their masculinity in their music videos. The writer also used the qualitative descriptive based on Roland Barthes' semiotic theory as a sign system separated into denotation and connotation, which builds a myth to obtain the meaning. The results found that the type of masculinity represented by the BTS boyband is metrosexual, seonbi, and bishonen. They have portrayed their masculinity from fashion usage that crosses gender boundaries, expression, and gestures that they represent in the music videos. BTS has a significant role in society as a public figure, especially for the younger generation who love and understand themselves more. If the man himself has femininity and masculinity, there is nothing wrong. BTS has redefined masculinity in many ways, and the most obvious is how they present themselves physically. They portray how the freedom and flexibility to wear whatever they want regardless of gender. BTS also teaches men that it does not become harmful for men to admit that they are vulnerable. It is all right to be clumsy, and nobody will judge anything about it. Loving ourselves is more important than following popular standards in society (which is not necessarily good for one's mental health).
