English Education and Applied Linguistics Journal (EEAL Journal) is devoted to the applications of English education to problems of English language teaching and learning. Attention is paid to the learning and teaching of English languages as a second and foreign language in all countries. EEAL Journal requires articles to have a sound theoretical base and a visible practical application for a broad readership. Review articles are considered for publication if they deal with critical language learning and teaching issues with significant implications for practice and research. it is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal dedicated to enhancing and disseminating scholarly work in the form of conceptual and research-based articles within the field of teaching English and English linguistics that have not been published or are under consideration elsewhere.

Abstract

This paper was entitled “An Analysis of Characters and Characterization in Wells the Island of Dr. Moreau”. This paper discussed of the secondary characters and their characterizations on novel the island of Dr.Moreau which were Moreau itself and his experiments or beast folks. The background of this research was taken because the novel is science fiction. The characters might be representing of future. The depiction of characters and characterizations was the reason of this paper and the development. The object researches problems were the way of the author explained the characters and characterizations, the characters development, and how plotting line assisted the characters and characterizations were developed. The theories were used in this paper; narratology including characters and characterization, and literary works. The aims of this paper the comprehension on literary works and how to find out the signs. The methodology in this paper is used qualitative method and descriptive methodology to interpret the signs. The result of the object research problems the secondary characters were the flat characters. The character of Moreau was the antagonist on this novel, meanwhile the beast folks were tritagonist. The findings were taken by point of view, dialogue, and so on. For further research of this paper, it might be taken of semiotics to get deeper comprehension of characters on this novel.

Abstract

Hotel is one of the places that people choose to spend their time while on vacation or in the context of business. Each hotel certainly has its own way of attracting people to come to their hotel to stay and come back later. Galeri Ciumbuleuit Hotel is one of the hotels that has a unique way of conveying information, especially regarding hotel promos to guests. They use online media (Whatsapp Broadcast) to provide information about hotel promos. Of course they have their own way of sending broadcast messages. They definitely choose a certain style of language to attract customers. As will be discussed in this study, "The Use of English on Online Media (Whatsapp Broadcast) in Front Office Department at Galeri Ciumbuleuit Hotel". This study uses a qualitative approach as the research method which will be explained descriptively. After doing some research and discussion, the results of this study indicate that Hotel Galeri Ciumbuleuit uses two language styles, namely formal and casual style in conveying hotel promos. The final result of this study also shows that the style of language they use tends to be casual style, the choice of words is simple but sufficient to convey the essence of the promos they provide. This explains that they want to make guests feel comfortable when reading the broadcast messages from the hotel. Thus the choice of language style they use in hotel promos is very simple but quite interesting

Abstract

The national standardized school summative examination (USBN) is the test for measuring student competency achievement, it is constructed by Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) about 25% and MGMP Province 75%. However, in improving the quality of the test, it is addition the cognitive dimention of High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) as the standard. The purpose of this study is to prove the quality of the test in terms of item analysis, distribution of hots and consistency of the test. This study was conducted by analyzing the national standardized school summative examination (USBN) 2019 items, answer sheet, key answer and syllabus.The data was collected from archieves in one of Senior High School. The result shows that the item analysis of the test is valid and reliable, the level of difficulty is not balanced, the discriminating power is sufficient, and the effectiveness of distractor is mostly need revision. Moreover, the distribution of hots has pass the limit and the test consistency is satisfactory in criteria of a good test.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the significant effect of Task Based Language Teaching towards students’ writing ability. The research method used in this study was quantitative method with the pre-experimental design. The participants of this study were the tenth grade students in one of state vocational high schools in Garut at academic year 2019/2020. One class was chosen as sample of this study. One class was selected as an experimental class which consisted of 30 students. The data were collected through the result of students’ pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using z-table formula. The result showed that zobserved = 13.012 and the significance level of 0,05; zcrirtical = z(0,5-0,05) = z0,450 = 1,65. Therefore, zobserved = 13.012 was greater than zcrirtical = 1,65, so that H0 was rejected and H was accepted. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension by using Read, Cover, Remember and Retell strategy

Abstract

The researcher found that high school students have problem in mastering and remembering the English words which they find in text. This research was carried out to find the significant effect of Frayer Model in enhancing students’ vocabulary. The research was taken place in one of private Vocational High School in Garut and it was participated by second grade students. The research employed quantitative methodology by using quasi experimental design. The instrument of the research was test; pretest and post-test. The purposive sampling was used. There were 42 students who participated in the study that was consisted of two groups; experimental with 22 students and control group with 20 students. Prior treatment, a pretest was administered to find out the overview of students’ vocabulary. During the treatment, participants in experimental group were exposed to use Frayer model and in control group they used conventional method; translating word using dictionary and illustration. After the treatment, post-test was administered to see the improvement gained by the participant. The data obtained from pretest and post-test were analyzed by statistical analysis; SPSS 16.00 and manual calculation. Then, the data were analyzed by using parametric test, t test. The result of the research showed the improvement of experimental group’s post-test mean score that was 80. It was bigger than their pretest mean score that was 42.82. It is also supported by the mean gain score of experimental group that got 0.54. Therefore, there was significant effect on students’ vocabulary by using Frayer Model.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of movement games on students' speaking performance. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the study was conducted at an Islamic elementary school in Garut with 4th-grade students as participants. Data were collected through observations, students' speaking scripts, and interviews. The findings indicate that movement games significantly increased students' enthusiasm for learning English, improved their pronunciation, and expanded their vocabulary. Thus, movement games are a promising alternative for enhancing students' speaking skills.

Abstract

Ice breaking is believed to cultivate a pleasant learning environment and promote active student participation. It's essential to note that the effectiveness of the ice-breaking strategy hinges on the teacher's ability to craft and execute the activity. Teachers must demonstrate creativity and innovation when selecting ice-breaking activities that align with student characteristics and lesson material. This research aims to explore the application of ice-breaking activities in the learning process to enhance students' motivation at Beuah State Elementary School. The study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach focusing on an English teacher as the key informant. Data collection methods include interviews and documentation, while data analysis incorporates data reduction, presentation, and conclusion techniques. The findings suggest that incorporating ice-breaking activities into learning sessions has transformed the previously dull and uninspiring atmosphere into a vibrant and enjoyable one, increasing student motivation. As a result, ice-breaking activities are deemed highly effective in boosting student engagement and motivation.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore students' perspectives on integrating digital technology into language learning after the Covid-19 pandemic. The study used a qualitative research method and collected data through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews conducted on April 29, 2024, at Ulumul Quran Senior High School. Twenty students participated in the study. The closed-ended questionnaire was analyzed using a Likert scale, while the semi-structured interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's (2006) approach. The findings indicated that students positively viewed integrating digital technology in English learning. They found digital technology enjoyable, engaging, attractive, easy to use, and helpful in their learning process.

Abstract

Mastering the English language offers numerous opportunities to effectively communicate one's thoughts, feelings, and ideas to a broader audience. Speaking can be difficult because speakers must develop phrases on the spot. This qualitative research aimed to investigate students’ attitudes towards code mixing in spoken language practice through semi-structured interviews. Five students from Jeumala Amal Islamic Senior High School were interviewed as participants because of their frequent use of code-mixing in daily conversations. The results indicated that students' positive attitudes towards code mixing helped them build confidence in speaking English and become more accustomed to using the language as a part of their regular communication habits.

Abstract

Speaking skills are essential for students, especially in Islamic boarding schools where daily conversations are prevalent. Students become more engaged in speaking English by emphasizing daily vocabulary memorization, particularly when influenced by equally motivated friends. This research aims to identify the factors that impact students' speaking performance in Islamic boarding school using a qualitative descriptive method. The data was collected through interviews, revealing that motivational factors and the language used in communication significantly influence students' speaking abilities. This study found that requiring students to speak English at Islamic boarding schools helps them become more proficient in speaking. Hence, students' daily activities at Jeumala Amal Islamic boarding school can be utilized to enhance their speaking skills.
