Abstract

Broiler chicken bone calcium oxide is 5.6 g mixed with 20 mL of distilled water. A mixture of 50 mL of lime juice and 30 mL of distilled water was added and then stirred using a hotplate magnetic stirrer at a temperature of 75°C for 30 min at a speed of 500 rpm/min. Ethanol 50% was added to as much as 20 mL (v/v), dried in the sun for 5 d, and then ground using a blender. Parameters observed were particle-size analysis (PSA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and color. Data from PSA, SEM, EDX, FTIR, and color test results were analyzed descriptively. The research results show that green synthesis with lime can change the particle size of broiler chicken bone calcium into nanoparticles. Lime can be used to synthesize broiler chicken bone calcium into nano-calcium citrate with a particle size of around 524.1 nm. Colorimetric evaluation showed excellent brightness (L* 72.60), minimal redness (a* 3.20), moderate yellowness (b* 15.60), and acceptable whiteness (68.31), demonstrating lime's dual function as both a synthesizing agent and natural purifier. These findings indicate that the lime-mediated synthesis produces high-quality nano-calcium citrate from poultry byproducts, making it a promising candidate for novel food supplement applications.

Abstract

This research investigated the effects of infertile egg powder (IEP) supplementation in the diets of broiler chickens on nutrient digestibility, digestive tract development, and performance. A total of 196 one-day-old male broiler chickens were randomized into four treatments differing in IEP levels, each with seven replicates of seven birds. The treatments were: 100% basal diet as a control (CON), 96% CON + 4% IEP (IEP4), 94% CON + 6% IEP (IEP6), and 92% CON + 8% IEP (IEP8). The observed variables included growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and digestive organ development. The results showed that dietary IEP enhanced the digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, and crude ash (p<0.05), most noticeably in the IEP6 and IEP8 groups. However, IEP did not affect crude fiber and nitrogen-free extract digestibility. The birds consuming diets with IEP had heavier and more prolonged (p<0.05) duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and whole small intestines compared to the birds fed the CON diet. Dietary IEP also improved liver and gizzard weight (p<0.05). Feeding IEP did not affect feed intake but increased (p<0.05) crude protein and metabolizable energy intake, leading to an increase (p<0.05) of daily weight gain and concomitantly decreased (p<0.05) feed conversion ratio of the IEP groups. To conclude, IEP from hatchery had a positive response on the improved nutrient digestibility, digestive tract development, and performance of broiler chickens, and therefore, it can be used as a feed ingredient for broiler chickens.

Abstract

Goats farming plays a vital role in ensuring food security and boosting rural incomes, especially in Yogyakarta Special Region. Saanen, Sapera, and Bligon goats are important breeds because of their significant economic value in both meat and milk production. For sustainable development, precise estimates of population trends, breeding factors, and income are essential for effective management and policy formulation. This study aims to estimate the population number of goats, breeding parameters, and gross income over the next five years. The research was conducted from July to September 2024 at The Regional Technical Implementation Unit of the Animal Diagnostic Livestock Breeding Development Center (UPTD BPPTDK) under the Department of Agriculture and Food Security, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The data collected includes both primary and secondary data. Primary data was obtained through direct interviews with staff and management at UPTD BPPTDK-DPKP of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. In contrast, secondary data comprised the latest 2024 population statistics obtained from UPTD BPPTDK. This data served as the basis for simulating population growth and calculating breeding parameters for the next five years. Based on the simulation results, the population of Saanen goats increased, with the percentage increase in livestock population from 2024 to 2028 reaching 125% for Saanen goats, 105% for Sapera goats, and 122% for Bligon goats. The average natural increase (NI) over five years was 40.70% for Saanen goats, 43.93% for Sapera goats, and 44.52% for Bligon goats. The net replacement rate (NRR) for male Saanen goats was 319.2% and for females 211.80%; for male Sapera goats, 453.51% and females 208.92%; for male Bligon goats 517.01% and females 209.68%. The total output, or number of goats that can be sold over five years, was 399, 138, and 432 for Saanen, Sapera, and Bligon goats, respectively. The gross income over five years was IDR 2,738,350,000. Based on these results, proper livestock management at UPTD BPPTDK-DPKP DIY can lead to increased and balanced goat populations over the next five years. These estimations can be used to inform policy decisions for livestock development programs at UPTD BPPTDK-DPKP DIY.

Abstract

Sustainable entrepreneurship plays an important role in driving economic growth while addressing environmental and social challenges as part of efforts to realize sustainable development. Sustainable entrepreneurs are motivated by their intention to solve sustainability issues through an entrepreneurial approach. In this context, this study aims to explore the role of green entrepreneurial mindset, green entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and environmental awareness on the cultivation of sustainable entrepreneurial intention among livestock farmers. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method of 280 young entrepreneurial respondents in the livestock sector who are interested in sustainable entrepreneurship. Data were collected using a closed questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the help of SmartPLS software. The study findings reveal that a green entrepreneurial mindset has a positive and significant direct and indirect effect on sustainable entrepreneurial intention through green entrepreneurial self-efficacy and environmental awareness. In addition, green entrepreneurial self-efficacy and environmental awareness have a positive and significant effect on sustainable entrepreneurial intention. This study makes an important contribution to understanding how green entrepreneurial mindset, green entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and environmental awareness can drive sustainable entrepreneurial intention in the livestock sector. In addition, the results of this study emphasize the need for an environmentally conscious entrepreneurial approach in managing livestock businesses.

Abstract

This study aimed to observe the effect of parity on the blood metabolite profiles and reproductive performance of Saanen-Etawah Crossbred does, maintained in smallholder farm. A total of 40 non-pregnant lactating does were divided into two groups: primiparous (n=16) and multiparous (n=24). The blood metabolite profiles, including total protein, glucose, cholesterol, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), were assessed. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein during the follicular phase, two hours prior morning feeding. Analysis of blood metabolites was carried out using photometric atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS)-flame procedure. Furthermore, reproductive performance was observed through observing the characteristics of estrus and the length of the estrus cycle. The results indicated total protein in blood were significantly higher (p<0.05) in multiparous does (7.04±0.87 g/dL) compared to primiparous does (5.47±1.40 g/dL). In contrast, primiparous does exhibited significantly higher (p<0.05) blood cholesterol levels (122.33±30.55 mg/dL) than multiparous does (107.14±13.45 mg/dL). Multiparous does displayed typical estrus characteristics, including vulvar reddening, swelling, and vaginal mucus production, alongside a significantly shorter estrus cycle length. Parity was positively correlated with total protein levels (r=0.577), vulvar reddening (r=0.355), vulvar swelling (r=0.343), and vaginal mucus production (r=0.450), while negatively correlated with cholesterol levels (r=-0.330) and estrus cycle length (r=-0.532). These findings indicate that parity influences total protein and cholesterol levels, as well as several key estrus characteristics. Further investigation into optimized feed regimens and reproductive hormone fluctuations is warranted to enhance the reproductive efficiency of Saanen-Etawah Crossbred does.

Abstract

The lowland area of Indonesia has economic potential to develop as a major centre for dairy farming businesses. Still, there is a foremost matter: overheated irradiation immersed in damped air would increase the heat stress level. The present study was conducted to assess the heat stress tolerance level of lowland Indonesian Holstein cows, characterized by a dominant level of Black and White (B/W) pigmented skin coat. This study involved 34 heads of Holstein cows that were cared for in Eastern Jakarta. Breathing frequency (BF), rectum's warmth (RW), pulse rate (PL), white-skinned spot temperature (WSST), black-skinned spot temperature (BSST), average temperature rounded skin (ATRS), back region temperature (BRT), chest region temperature (CRT), upper-leg temperature (ULT), lower-leg temperature (LLT), skin's temperature (ST), body's temperature (BT), and heat tolerance coefficient (HTC) as variables were checked statistically with R 4.4.2 type software comprised correlation and independent t-test. Cows B/W classification performed with the imageJ 1.54g series program. Those analyses showed that most lowland Indonesian Holsteins were characterized by black-pigmented dominant cows (BDC). The pigmentation of both lateral sides of the body generated a significant correlation (p<0.05 and p<0.01) with several vital symptoms, including WSST, ATRS, ST, BT, and HTC, but only in the BDC Holstein class. The test of mean distinction between the two classes (BDC and WDC) produced statistically insignificant differences (p>0.05) in all measurable vital symptoms; all variables showed trends indicating that the BDC class had a greater response to heat stress. The BDC Holstein type selection base had high expectations of elevating the HTC score in Indonesian lowland cows, as the closing decision.
