Abstract

Adding feed additives to combat coccidiosis, such as anti-coccidial drugs to broiler diets, can lead to side effects, meat residues, and antimicrobial resistance issues. Alternatively, plant-derived anti-coccidia could serve as safe and simple alternatives compared to synthetic/chemical feed additives. The objective of this study was to evaluate the production performance and oocyst output of broilers fed diets with plant-derived anti coccidia. A total of 300 day-old Cobb 500 broiler chicks were randomly assigned in 30 cages in a completely randomized design with 3 treatment groups, 10 replicates per treatment of 10 chicks per cage. The treatment diets were fed for 35 days: basal diet without anti-coccidia (T1), 500ppm synthetic anti-coccidia containing Narasin and Nicarbazin (T2), and 500ppm plant-derived anti-coccidia containing Cinnamomum camphora, Elephatopus scaber, and Valeriana walichii (T3). Results showed significant differences (p<0.05) in the average body weight gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, and income over feed and chick cost among the three treatment groups. Fecal analysis results showed the absence of oocysts in those feeds with synthetic anti-coccidia and plant derived anti-coccidia. T3 that contains plant-derived anti-coccidia has the highest growth performance among other treatments. In conclusion, plant-derived anti coccidia can be used as an alternative anti-coccidial drug without compromising the growth performance of broiler chickens

Abstract

This study examines the social dynamics of cattle farmer groups as a strategic approach to supporting the sustainability of cattle farming in rural areas. There is evidence to suggest that social dynamics play an important role in livestock farming, impacting productivity, efficiency and sustainability. The main objective of this study was to develop a Group Dynamics Index (GDI) with a specific focus on evaluating eight key elements of group dynamics: purpose, structure, task function, coaching, cohesiveness, atmosphere, pressure, and group effectiveness. The study employed a quantitative descriptive survey methodology, involving 150 respondents drawn from three sub districts in West Lombok Regency. Data collection was conducted using a structured Likert scale-based questionnaire, which facilitated the measurement of respondent’s perceptions and attitudes. A weighted analysis approach was applied to the gathered data to generate a cumulative index. The findings indicate that structural factors, such as decision-making and task division, and non-structural elements, including interpersonal relationships and social support, significantly influence group dynamics. It was observed that farmer groups in the Lembar sub-district demonstrated the highest cumulative index (0.68), exhibiting excellence in aspects such as group structure and task function. Farmer groups in the Narmada sub-district exhibited a cumulative index of 0.65, distinguishing themselves through their notable group cohesiveness and atmosphere. Conversely, the farmer group in Gunung Sari demonstrated strong member loyalty (0.60) yet exhibited a need for substantial enhancement in internal management, particularly concerning task function and group pressure. The study concludes that the sustainability and effectiveness of group dynamics are contingent on the balanced integration of structural and non structural elements. A comprehensive, holistic approach that harmonizes internal management and social relations is essential to support overall group performance. The GDI proved to be a relevant and applicable tool for comprehensively evaluating group dynamics

Abstract

Beef is one of the main food commodities, so to realize beef self-sufficiency, the government has made many policies to realize the beef self-sufficiency program.The objective of this study was to analyze the competitiveness and impact of government policies on beef cattle in East Kolaka District, Southeast Sulawesi Province. This research was conducted in East Kolaka Districtin 2024, a total of 120 beef cattle farmers weresurveyed using systematic purposive sampling and data were analyzed using the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) an economic tool for evaluating competitiveness and policy effects. The respondents were obtained by applying systematic purposive sampling with survey method and analyzed with PAM. The results showed that beef cattle farming in East Kolaka Districtispersonally and socially profitable. This explains that beef cattle farming is still profitable for farmers even without government policy. This business also has competitiveness both competitively and comparatively. This can be seen from the Domestic Resource Cost Ratio (DRC) svalue of 0.59 and Private Cost Ratio (PCR) of 0.81. Government policies on outputs and inputs of beef cattle business in East Kolaka District reduce incentives for producers, are ineffective in protecting production and cause higher production costs compared to potential profits without these policies

Abstract

Rapid economic growth has led to an increase in the consumption of meat in the city of Pekanbaru in Riau Province, Indonesia. This calls greater attention from the government and animal product business units to improve the quality of meat supply. Implementing hygiene and sanitation practices along meat distribution channels is one strategy to enhance the quality of meat. The Indonesian government requires meat products to have certification in the form of a Veterinary Control Number (NKV). This study aims to study the effect of NKV certification marks, superior value of fresh beef, and perceived price suitability on the intention to repurchase NKV-certified beef. This study was conducted using a mixed method, using in-depht interview and survey design. The questionnaires were distributed through online and offline methods to a sample of 200 respondents, who were selected using judgemental sampling method based on the following criteria: (1) they were residents of the city of Pekanbaru; (2) they were at least 21 years old; (3) they had engaged in buying beef. The questionnaire consisted of 22 questions regarding NKV labelling, superior value of fresh beef, perceived price suitability, and intention to repurchase NKV-certified beef. Data were analysed with linear multiple regression analysis using SPSS 26 software package. The results of the t test showed that only the superior value of fresh beef had no significant influence (β = 0.075) on the intention to repurchase certified beef in Pekanbaru, while the NKV certification mark (β = 0.160) and perceived price suitability (β = 0.447) had a significant influence on the intention to repurchase certified beef. This study shows that the research model explains 28.4% of the variability in the intention to repurchase beef. This research concluded that the NKV certification mark and perceived price suitability are important factors that influence the intention to repurchase beef in Pekanbaru City.

Abstract

The People's Business Credit (KUR) program plays a crucial role in supporting Indonesia's livestock sector, which remains a primary source of livelihood for many rural households. This study aims to identify the characteristics of livestock farmers receiving KUR and the factors influencing loan repayment. Data were collected through a survey of 505 livestock farmers in Purbalingga Regency who had received KUR financing. A binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the determinants of loan repayment. The results show that borrower age, loan amount, loan term, and credit risk score significantly affect loan repayment performance. In contrast, gender, number of dependents, education level, business experience, income, and repayment capacity do not have a significant effect. The findings suggest that borrower characteristics and loan terms are crucial in determining repayment outcomes. Policymakers are advised to align KUR loan terms with livestock production cycles and provide financial literacy support to improve repayment rates and ensure the long-term sustainability of livestock-based KUR programs.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the characteristics of beef cattle farming, the motivation of Malay and Chinese ethnic farmers, and to identify the factors influencing their motivation. The research was conducted from March to December 2024 in Central Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, where livestock farming has become an increasingly important livelihood. A total of 100 respondents were involved, consisting of 50 Malay and 50 Chinese beef cattle farmers. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling, with the inclusion criteria being beef cattle farmers of Malay and Chinese ethnicity who resided in Pangkalan Baru District and were actively engaged in beef cattle production. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. The results show significant differences in business characteristics between the two ethnic groups, particularly in sources of finance, market access, and business orientation. Both Malay and Chinese farmers demonstrated high levels of motivation, driven by both economic and socio-cultural factors. The analysis revealed that cattle farming experience (p<0.05), cattle herd size (p<0.05), and ethnicity (p<0.01) significantly influenced farmer motivation. These findings highlight the role of ethnic background and farming experience in shaping farmers' motivation, which is essential for designing culturally sensitive livestock development strategies in the region.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the polymorphism of the exon-2 myostatin gene (MSTN) in Pitalah ducks using the PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) method. 28 blood samples of Pitalah ducks were used in this study. Blood samples were extracted using Intron Biotechnology's Intron G-SpinTM Total DNA Extraction Kit protocol. The DNA extraction results were then amplified using a pair of primers, namely the Forward: 5' TCCACTTGTTACTGATGCTGT-3' primer and the Reverse: 5'- TAGGGAAATGGAGGCACAGG-3' primer, with a fragment target of 700 bp. Furthermore, the amplified product is restricted using the Taq1 enzyme, which recognizes the cutting site on T|CGA. Based on the results of the study, two genotypes were found, namely 89.29% truncated homozygous (+/+) and heterozygous (+/-), as well as 10.71% of the total sample used, while untruncated homozygous genotypes (-/-) were not found in this study. Meanwhile, the allele frequency (+) was 0.946, the allele frequency (-) was 0.054, and the observed heterozygosity value was greater than the expected heterozygosity value (Ho>He). This study concludes that the myostatin exon-2 gene in Pitalah ducks is polymorphic and is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

Abstract

Cheese coagulants from plant origin have emerged as promising alternatives to animal rennet in cheese production. Among them, latex from Ficus carica L. has shown potential as a natural milk-clotting agent for goat cheese production. This study aims to determine the optimal incubation time and fig tree latex extract concentration on the quality of goat cheese. The optimization of the production process of the goat cheese was carried out using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Central Composite Design (CCD). The independent variables were the concentration of the Ficus carica L. latex extract (0.2-0.5 mL/100 mL of milk) and the time of incubation (60-120 min). The goal was to achieve maximum protein content (%), ash content (%), and calcium content (%). The results of this study showed that the Ficus carica L. latex extract used in the study could coagulate milk with a strength of 354.69 MCU and a dominant protein molecular weight of about 20 kDa. The optimization results using RSM method with CCD design showed that the goat cheese was produced optimally in 0.5 mL/100 mL of milk for the concentration of Ficus carica L. latex extract, with 120 min incubation time. These optimal conditions resulted in a cheese with protein content of 18.56%, ash content of 2.32%, calcium content of 803.93 mg/100g, and desirability level of 0.93.

Abstract

The increasing environmental and ethical challenges associated with conventional beef production have intensified consumer awareness of sustainable food systems, particularly in urban areas of Indonesia. This study examines urban consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for sustainably produced beef, focusing on how sustainability attributes, including eco-certification, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability, affect purchasing decisions. Data were collected through a mixed-methods approach, integrating online surveys and Discrete Choice Experiments (DCE), involving a representative sample from five major urban centers: Jakarta, Surabaya, Padang, Balikpapan, and Denpasar. The findings indicate that eco-certification is the most valued attribute, with a marginal willingness to pay (MWTP) of IDR 25,000 per kilogram, followed by animal welfare (IDR 18,500) and environmental sustainability (IDR 15,000). Consumers also demonstrated a general willingness to pay a 20% premium for sustainably produced beef, although regional disparities were observed. Jakarta and Surabaya exhibited the highest WTP premiums, at 23% and 22%, respectively, reflecting the influence of socioeconomic variables, including income, educational attainment, and environmental awareness. These results underscore the growing importance of environmental concerns and ethical considerations in shaping urban consumers’ preferences for beef products. The study contributes to the limited body of literature on sustainable meat consumption behavior in emerging markets, offering practical insights for policymakers, producers, and marketers in designing targeted strategies to promote sustainable beef consumption and support the development of environmentally responsible livestock industries in Indonesia.

Abstract

Dairy goat productivity in Indonesia remains relatively low, primarily due to its suboptimal feed efficiency, affecting nutrient digestibility and milk yield. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of seaweed and organic mineral supplementation on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, and milk production performance in dairy goats. An in vivo experimental study was conducted using a completely randomized design involving 16 pregnant Saanen-Etawah crossbred ewes in their second lactation and offered treatment feeds for 4 weeks before parturition until 8 weeks postpartum. The animals divided into four dietary treatments: T0 (control diet without supplementation), T1 (control diet + rumensin), T2 (control diet + 2% seaweed), and T3 (T2 + organic minerals including Cr, Se, and Zn) with the feed offered was based on dry matter requirements of 4% of body weight, once daily at 1.30 p.m. The control diet is a mixture of concentrate, tofu dregs, and forage. The observed parameters included dry matter intake (DMI), organic matter intake (OMI), digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude fiber, and crude protein, as well as daily milk yield and its components. The results indicated that while feed intake did not differ significantly among treatments, the supplementation of seaweed and organic minerals significantly improved nutrient digestibility, daily milk yield, and the composition of milk, including fat, protein, lactose, and total solids. The T3 treatment yielded the most optimal outcomes in enhancing feed conversion efficiency and milk performance. These results suggest that seaweed and organic minerals may serve as effective and applicable functional feed additives to sustainably improve dairy goat productivity through optimized rumen function and metabolic utilization.
