Abstract

This study examines the construction of labor hierarchies and institutional discipline in George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and London. Using a qualitative textual analysis grounded in Marxist Literary Theory and New Historicism, the research investigates how social stratification is maintained within the service economy of 1930s Paris and the casual ward system of London. The primary analytical focus is two-fold: first, a deconstruction of the internal caste system of the modern hotel, where labor alienation and professional rivalries function to prevent proletarian solidarity; and second, an evaluation of the Vagrancy Act of 1824 as a state mechanism for social control through forced mobility.  Findings indicate that the hotel kitchen operates as a site of rigid stratification where the pride of the drudge creates a form of false consciousness among workers. Additionally, the study reveals that the state-mandated spike system in London functions to subdue the underclass by exhausting their intellectual and political capacity through purposeless movement. The research concludes that these institutions serve to manage a floating population through performative luxury and systemic de-pauperization, highlighting a profound waste of human potential in the pursuit of maintaining class boundaries.

Abstract

Scientific text translation presents challenges that extend beyond linguistic equivalence. It requires translators to balance accuracy, clarity, terminological consistency, and disciplinary conventions. This article reviews major translation theories proposed by Nida, Catford, Newmark, Reiss, Vermeer, House, Nord, Baker, Lefevere, and Venuti, and examines their implications for the translation of scientific discourse. Drawing on selected examples from biomedical and engineering texts, the study demonstrates how theoretical perspectives can guide translation strategies that ensure both fidelity and functionality. The analysis shows that no single theory is sufficient to address the complexity of scientific translation. Instead, a hybrid approach that combines linguistic, functionalist, textual, pragmatic, and ethical perspectives offer a more effective framework. Such an approach helps translators maintain terminological precision, improve textual coherence, adapt structures to target-language conventions, and preserve the communicative purpose of scientific knowledge.

Abstract

This study investigates the psychological dynamics of the main character in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart through the lens of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. The research addresses the question of how the interaction of the id, ego, and superego shapes the protagonist’s psychological conflict and influences his irrational behavior throughout the narrative. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the study utilizes textual analysis to interpret the character’s thoughts, actions, and emotional responses based on Freud’s structural model of personality. The findings reveal that the protagonist’s obsessive fixation on the old man’s eye originates from the id, whereas the ego proves incapable of regulating these instinctual impulses in a rational manner. Following the murder, the superego intensifies feelings of guilt and moral anxiety, ultimately manifesting in auditory hallucinations that compel the protagonist to confess his crime. The study concludes that Freud’s psychoanalytic framework offers a comprehensive explanation of the protagonist’s internal conflict, illustrating that unconscious psychological forces significantly shape human behavior and decision-making in literary narratives while enriching the application of psychoanalytic literary criticism.

Abstract

Justin Bieber's performance of "Beauty and a Beat" at the 2026 Coachella Festival sparked extensive public discussion on TikTok, particularly over his altered vocal style and his use of a laptop during the live performance. This study investigates how audiences interpreted and responded to the performance by examining how perlocutionary acts are manifested in TikTok comments. Drawing upon J. L. Austin's speech act theory, the research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze 100 TikTok comments related to the performance. The findings identify several categories of perlocutionary effects, with nostalgia emerging as the predominant audience response, indicating that viewers interpreted the performance through both emotional and experiential lenses. These results demonstrate that contemporary musical performances operate not merely as entertainment but also as communicative events that shape audience emotions, perceptions, and patterns of digital interaction. The study argues that applying perlocutionary speech act theory to social media discourse broadens the scope of digital pragmatics by providing deeper insights into audience engagement within online participatory cultures.

Abstract

Pantun occupies a central position in the Langkat Malay wedding tradition as a medium for transmitting cultural values, social norms, and collective identity; however, the symbolic meanings embedded in the Hempang Pintu and Makan Beradab oral traditions have not been comprehensively examined through Peircean semiotics. This study investigates how icons, indices, and symbols are constructed in pantuns performed during these traditions and explores the cultural meanings they convey. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzed 85 pantun stanzas from four traditional wedding processions using Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic semiotic model, supported by observation, note-taking, and in-depth interviews. The findings identified 20 icons, 28 indices, and 76 symbols, indicating that symbolic signs dominate because pantuns predominantly communicate figurative meanings and culturally shared conventions. The symbolic meanings encompass religiosity, Malay cultural identity, respect for customary traditions, protection of the bride's dignity, and moral guidance for married life. The study contributes a novel systematic mapping of the distribution of icons, indices, and symbols across the four Hempang Pintu and Makan Beradab processions in Hinai District and demonstrates that pantun functions as a dynamic system of cultural communication that plays a vital role in preserving Malay cultural heritage amid ongoing modernization.
