Abstract

Literary works not only represent social realities but also transmit educational values through characters, conflicts, and social interactions. This study examines how social and educational values are represented in Panji Wijaya’s novella Jejak Kaki di Tanah Luka from the perspective of literary sociology. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, the study uses the novella as its primary source, while textual excerpts containing social and educational values constitute the research data. Data were collected through literature review, close reading, and note-taking and were analyzed through data reduction, classification, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal social values encompassing social solidarity, social concern, mutual cooperation, sacrifice, nationalism, unity, social leadership, and respect for national heroes. The novella also embodies educational values related to morality, social responsibility, religiosity, character formation, and nationalism. These values are represented through the characters’ actions, behaviors, and interpersonal interactions throughout the narrative. The study concludes that Jejak Kaki di Tanah Luka functions not merely as a literary work for aesthetic enjoyment but also as a medium of social reflection and education that communicates socially and morally significant values to its reader.

Abstract

Writing descriptive texts remains challenging for many English as a Foreign Language students, particularly in developing, organizing, and effectively expressing ideas. This study investigated whether a Deep Learning Approach significantly affects the descriptive text writing ability of tenth-grade students at State Senior High School 1 Tanjungbalai in the 2025–2026 academic year. The study employed a quantitative experimental design, with 72 students assigned to experimental and control classes. Data were collected through observation sheets, questionnaires, and writing tests, and analyzed using an independent-samples t-test with IBM SPSS Statistics Version 20. The findings revealed that the experimental class achieved a higher mean score (80.56) than the control class (70.97), with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. The Deep Learning Approach facilitated active participation, critical thinking, and the development of creative ideas during writing activities. These findings demonstrate that the Deep Learning Approach significantly improves students’ descriptive text writing ability and offers an effective pedagogical approach for supporting meaningful English writing instruction.

Abstract

This study examines how Aristotle’s rhetorical appeals—ethos, pathos, and logos—are employed in TikTok live selling by influencer Sheila Shaukia (@shellasaukia) to construct persuasive communication and stimulate consumer purchase intentions. The research addresses the question of how classical rhetorical principles are adapted within contemporary live commerce environments. Using a descriptive qualitative design and content analysis, data were collected from five TikTok live selling sessions conducted between January and April 2026. The findings indicate that persuasive effectiveness emerges from the strategic integration of the three rhetorical appeals. Ethos is developed through credibility, entrepreneurial identity, and social legitimacy; pathos is manifested through emotional engagement, religiously resonant storytelling, and the creation of urgency; while logos is conveyed through value-based pricing, product demonstrations, and real-time social proof. The analysis further reveals that these rhetorical strategies operate dynamically and interactively throughout live selling sessions, strengthening audience trust and purchase intention. This study concludes that Aristotle’s rhetorical framework remains highly relevant in the digital marketplace and argues that its contemporary adaptation is reflected in the concepts of auditable ethos, spiritually resonant emotional pathos, and real-time social proof logos, thereby extending rhetorical theory within the context of social commerce and digital marketing.

Abstract

This study investigates the forms, functions, and meanings of the folklore associated with the Royal Tombs of Imogiri in Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta, and examines its potential as authentic Indonesian language teaching material for junior high school students. The research addresses the question of how Imogiri folklore reflects cultural values and how these narratives can be transformed into pedagogically meaningful learning resources. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with three key informants (a tomb guardian, a royal attendant, and a long-time resident), and documentation, and were analyzed using William R. Bascom’s four-function folklore theory and Danandjaja’s folklore classification. The findings identify three dominant folklore forms—legend, myth, and folk narrative—that collectively fulfill Bascom’s four folkloric functions: projection, cultural validation, education, and social control, while conveying interconnected cultural, social, and spiritual meanings. The study concludes that Imogiri folklore possesses substantial pedagogical value as contextual Indonesian language teaching material, supporting character education and local wisdom integration while extending previous scholarship by positioning folklore as the primary analytical focus and systematically translating its narrative functions into a practical instructional framework.

Abstract

Robert Frost’s “Fire and Ice” portrays the destructive potential of human emotions through its concise poetic structure and the symbolic opposition between fire and ice. This study aims to examine the meaning of Robert Frost’s “Fire and Ice” through a structuralist approach, with particular emphasis on how the poem’s intrinsic elements construct representations of human emotions and destruction. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study focuses on intrinsic elements including theme, diction, symbolism, imagery, and rhyme. Data were collected through close reading and textual analysis, while the analytical procedure involved identifying the poem’s intrinsic elements, examining their interrelationships, and interpreting how they collectively construct its meaning. The findings reveal that the poem is structured around the opposition between “fire,” which symbolizes passion, and “ice,” which symbolizes hatred, with both forces possessing an equally destructive potential. Despite its brevity, the poem employs a tightly organized structure that intensifies the depth and complexity of its meaning. The novelty of this study lies in demonstrating, through an integrated structural analysis of the poem’s intrinsic elements, that the opposition between fire and ice functions not merely as an apocalyptic image but as a structural representation of destructive human emotions. The poem consequently extends beyond the theme of apocalypse to illustrate how human emotions themselves can become powerful sources of destruction.

Abstract

Compliment speech acts are integral to digital communication, as they convey appreciation while fostering interpersonal relationships among social media users. However, the forms, objects, and pragmatic meanings of compliments in TikTok interactions remain insufficiently explored. This study therefore examines how compliment speech acts are realized in netizens’ comments on the TikTok account @Aqeela Aza Calista from July 2024 to June 2025. Employing a descriptive qualitative design within a pragmatic framework, the study analyzed purposively selected comments containing compliments, collected through observation and note-taking. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model of data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings identified twenty-six compliment speech acts, encompassing direct, indirect, and complex compliments, directed toward physical appearance, abilities or skills, creative content, and personality. Pragmatically, these compliments expressed appreciation and operated as positive politeness strategies that strengthened solidarity, supported content creators, reinforced positive self-image, and sustained harmonious digital interaction. The study concludes that compliment speech acts perform significant interpersonal functions in TikTok discourse and extend pragmatic understandings of compliment realization within social media communication.
