Abstract

The implementation of multicultural education in the teaching of Islamic history in the History Education Study Program at UISU (Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara) holds significant value and benefits. In this context, multicultural education aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of Islamic history in an inclusive manner, promote appreciation for cultural and religious diversity, and enhance students' cross-cultural communication skills and understanding. Through the implementation of multicultural education, students in the History Education Study Program at UISU can develop broader and deeper perspectives on Islamic history, including its influence on various regions and eras' cultures and societies. They can study and analyze the roles and contributions of different ethnic groups, languages, and traditions in the development of Islam. The multicultural education approach also enables students to understand that Islam has rich internal diversity, encompassing diverse worship practices, intellectual traditions, and theological thoughts. This research adopts a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach, which involves critically analyzing social phenomena. The phenomenological approach is employed by the researcher to ensure the objectivity and scientific nature of the research. The researcher acts as a key instrument and suspends preconceived assumptions or biases. Meanwhile, qualitative methods can be used to uncover and understand the underlying aspects of phenomena, providing insights into the unknown or little-known aspects for both researchers and lecturers.

Abstract

Indonesia is a diverse country. This diversity presents great potential, especially in terms of cultural diversity and local wisdom values that reflect the socio-cultural aspects of Indonesian society. It is important to continue, teach, develop, and preserve this distinctive character amidst globalization, particularly to the younger generation. One way to do this is by integrating education that instills local wisdom values into the teaching and learning activities of Indonesian History and History subjects. Integrating education that instills local wisdom values into the teaching and learning activities of Indonesian History and History subjects is essential because it serves as a means for students to understand and appreciate their own culture. Local wisdom is an integral part of a society's culture and cannot be separated from the language of that community. Local wisdom is usually passed down from one generation to another through oral traditions, such as folk tales, proverbs, songs, and traditional games. Local wisdom is a knowledge that is discovered by a particular local community through a collection of experiences while adapting and integrating with their understanding of culture and the natural environment of a place. One way to instill local wisdom values is through the use of teaching methods, instructional materials, and learning media in Indonesian History lessons.

Abstract

The research explores the utilization of project-based learning approaches in teaching history to tenth-grade students at Kartika 1-4 Pematangsiantar Private High School. Forty students participated in the study, with the objective of assessing the impact of this approach on academic performance and engagement levels. Various data collection instruments, such as observation sheets, interviews, written exams, field notes, and student worksheets, were employed in this two-cycle classroom action research. Study results suggest that integrating project-based learning models into history learning can positively impact student engagement and academic performance. The increase in students' grades in each cycle corroborates these findings. In cycle I, research success criteria that emphasize students' active participation in physical, mental and social aspects in the learning process are met in 75% of cases. Student learning outcomes are scored 75 on a scale of 1 to 100. When the project-based learning paradigm was implemented, student participation increased significantly, with an average score of 80% and a rise from 67% to 92% between cycles. Furthermore, each learning outcome's average score rose from 72.5% in cycle I to 95% in cycle II, with an 83.8% categorization level. These findings imply that the use of project-based learning approaches can enhance students' academic achievement and encourage ongoing learning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness and challenges of implementing the 'HMI Bersuara' jargon in the leadership practice of the Islamic Student Association (HMI) and its impact on motivation, member performance, and organizational identity. Using a qualitative approach and a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The results show that a deep understanding of the jargon correlates positively with member participation and motivation, and impacts individual and group performance. However, there are challenges in ensuring a uniform understanding among all members, as well as in managing internal conflicts and adapting to external changes. The practical implications of this study emphasize the importance of intensive and ongoing socialization to strengthen understanding and appreciation of organizational jargon in shaping a strong and effective organizational culture.

Abstract

This study examines the cultural acculturation in Mandailing ethnic marriages in Desa Simonis, Labuhanbatu Utara Regency, North Sumatra. Focusing on how the marriage process serves as a medium for cultural integration in a multiethnic society, the research identifies various cultural elements interacting and adapting within marriage practices. Using a qualitative approach, the study involves direct observation, interviews with local traditional leaders and community members, and analysis of documents related to marriage traditions. The findings reveal that Mandailing marriages in Desa Simonis not only incorporate local Mandailing customs but also blend elements of Malay and Hindu cultures, creating a rich and dynamic celebration. This acculturation is reflected in various ritual aspects, such as the tepung tawar ceremony, upah-upah, and Endeng-Endeng dance, which show the integration of symbols and practices from different cultures. The study highlights the role of marriage as a key mechanism in the preservation and transformation of culture, as well as how marriage functions as a bridge between different traditions and communities. This research provides insights into the ongoing process of cultural acculturation in multiethnic societies and its contribution to the formation of new cultural identities in the region.

Abstract

This research explores the causes of religious and political conflicts in Medan City and their impacts. Using qualitative methods, data were obtained through interviews with the community and religious leaders. The findings show that since 2019, conflicts have decreased due to increased tolerance, the role of religious leaders, and responsible media. However, the lack of education on politics mixed with religion remains a major challenge. These conflicts can become prolonged if not properly addressed. Abstract

This writing aims to address several issues: First, the synthesis of stimuli leading to the birth of Roger Scruton's concept of green conservatism; Second, a critical evaluation of the meaning and principles of Roger Scruton's green conservatism. The findings of this research are as follows: first, the intellectual stimuli that gave rise to Scruton's concept of green conservatism began with Scruton's first formative experience, namely his difficult and contentious relationship with his father. This led young Scruton to tend to appreciate objects that his father disliked. The second stimulus occurred when Scruton was in Paris during the student riots of 1968. Scruton viewed the destructive behavior of the rioting students as highly mischievous, describing the riots as a case of young people indulging themselves by plundering the heritage that made their lives privileged. The final stimulus came in 1995 when he turned away from academia to focus on writing and farming after purchasing farmland in Wiltshire. Second, Scruton has integrated the principles of conservatism with environmentalism, resulting in green conservatism, a philosophical and political stance that combines traditional conservative values with environmental concerns. This concept emphasizes several important principles, including: oikophilia, subsidiarity, localism, and the preservation of culture and history.

Abstract

This study analyzes the dynamics of wars that occurred in the history of the Islamic community, starting from the time of Prophet Muhammad to the Abbasid Dynasty. The study aims to understand how wars that initially focused on self-defense evolved into more complex internal conflicts, including civil wars. Using a historical and critical approach, this research explores the factors that drove this shift, including political, social, and religious influences. The findings of this study indicate that although the wars were initially motivated by the principle of defense against external threats, over time, various political interests and divisions within the Islamic community triggered internal conflicts, leading to civil wars. This research provides insights into the long-term impact of these conflicts on political and social developments in Islamic history.
