Abstract

This study examines the implementation of peer-review in developing Business English writing skills among undergraduate business students at Institut Desain dan Bisnis Bali. A mixed-method research design was employed involving 39 students enrolled in an English for Business course over one semester, with the course lecturer included as an informant. Data were collected through classroom observations, documentation of students’ writing drafts and peer-review activities, and a perception survey using a five-point Likert scale. Qualitative data were analyzed descriptively to explore the peer-review process, instructional scaffolding, and student engagement, while quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and interpreted based on Koyan’s (2012) perception criteria. The findings reveal that structured peer-review supports students’ writing development by enhancing grammatical awareness, word choice, and active classroom participation. Quantitative results indicate very high student perceptions of teacher performance, with a mean score of 4.48, reflecting strong pedagogical, cognitive, and affective competencies. Addressing a research gap, this study situates peer-review within Business English instruction in a heterogeneous EFL classroom, an area that remains underexplored. The study contributes theoretically to peer-review pedagogy and practically by proposing a structured peer-review model that facilitates active learning and writing development in Business English contexts.

Abstract

Previous studies on resilience among People Living with HIV (PLHIV) have predominantly emphasized individual psychological factors, while the role of community-based accompaniment contexts remains underexplored. Addressing this gap, this study examined the relationship between self-acceptance and resilience among PLHIV assisted by a community-based organization in Makassar. This quantitative research employed a correlational design involving 53 PLHIV affiliated with Yayasan Gaya Celebes. Data were collected using validated self-acceptance and resilience questionnaires and analyzed through descriptive statistics, assumption testing, and Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis. The findings indicated that most participants demonstrated moderate levels of both self-acceptance and resilience. Although a positive association was observed between self-acceptance and resilience (r = 0.251), the relationship did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05), and the effect size was small. These results suggest that self-acceptance may function as a supportive psychological resource rather than a primary determinant of resilience within a community-assisted context. Theoretically, this study contributes to the multidimensional understanding of resilience by demonstrating that internal psychological factors alone may not sufficiently explain adaptive functioning among PLHIV. The findings reinforce the importance of situating resilience within broader social and contextual frameworks. Practically, the study underscores the relevance of strengthening community-based accompaniment programs through peer support, stigma reduction initiatives, and sustained psychosocial assistance embedded in local contexts.

Abstract

The transition from Curriculum 2013 to the Merdeka Curriculum represents a strategic effort to enhance flexibility and personalization in Indonesia’s education system. This study conducts a comparative analysis of both curricula at the elementary level, focusing on philosophical foundations, curriculum structure, instructional strategies, assessment systems, and implementation challenges. A case study approach was employed through policy analysis and field observations at two elementary schools in Pinrang Regency. The findings reveal that Curriculum 2013 emphasizes standardized procedures and structured scientific approaches, which often limit instructional flexibility. In contrast, the Merdeka Curriculum adopts a phase-based structure that grants teachers greater autonomy to implement differentiated instruction responsive to students’ diverse needs. The integration of the Projek Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila (P5) further strengthens contextual and character-based learning. However, the effectiveness of the Merdeka Curriculum is strongly influenced by teacher readiness and institutional capacity. This study offers empirical insights to support policymakers and schools in designing adaptive curriculum transition strategies grounded in professional development, institutional support, and contextual considerations to ensure sustainable improvement in elementary education quality.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the influence of situational, social, and cultural contexts on the interpretation of Wolio proverbs and explain the manifestation of Grice's cooperative principle through the maxims of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner of use. This study uses a pragmatic approach with a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through literature review, in-depth interviews with native speakers, and observation of the use of proverbs in real communication. The analysis was conducted by interpreting the meaning of proverbs based on the surrounding context, then mapping the realization of Grice's maxims in the structure of the utterance and the strategy of using the proverb. The results of the study indicate that context has a direct and determining influence, as the meaning and function of proverbs can only be understood correctly when the speech situation, social relations, and cultural values are taken into account. In addition, Grice's principle of cooperation is reflected in the proverb as an effective, polite, and culturally normative communication strategy. These findings confirm the contribution of Wolio proverbs to the study of pragmatics and cultural linguistics and have the potential to be used as educational material to strengthen cultural literacy and communication values.

Abstract

This study examines an English language learning intervention for coastal children in Bajo Lawele, Buton Regency, Indonesia, by integrating resilience principles, culturally grounded learning, and community participation. The study employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 32 Bajo children aged 9–12 years. The intervention was conducted in six sessions over three weeks using storytelling with maritime themes, vocabulary games related to coastal life, and role-play based on children’s everyday experiences. Data were collected through an English proficiency test covering vocabulary, listening, and speaking micro-tasks, a resilience scale adapted from Grotberg’s framework (I Have, I Am, and I Can), classroom observations, and informal parent interviews. The findings showed positive changes in both English proficiency and learning resilience after the intervention. Vocabulary scores increased from 45.6 to 72.3, listening comprehension from 48.1 to 70.4, and speaking from 41.3 to 68.9, with the highest gain in speaking (66.8%). Improvements were also found in all resilience dimensions, especially I Can, which increased from 52.9 to 82.4 (55.7%). These findings suggest that culturally grounded and resilience-informed English learning may support language development and learner engagement among coastal children while preserving local cultural values.

Abstract

Medical students must maintain prolonged mental strain and different cognitive loads. Previous research has focused primarily on studying different types of intelligence and its relation to academic success and more specifically to grade point average (GPA). Yet, this leaves several questions unanswered. Most empirical research has concentrated on academic achievements and not on the psychological construct of stamina. Most of the research studies in this area focused in the western countries, and hardly any evidence exists on medical students from poorer countries. Most research in this area focused on academic achievement and failed to use psychometric tests assessing intelligence and the stamina construct. It also remains open question for academic research to explore the relationship between cognitive intelligence and work endurance. This study focused on the relationship of the emerged psychological construct and intelligence quotient (IQ) of medical students in Universitas Islam Malang, Indonesia. A cross-sectional analytic study was done on medical students who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Absolutely, IQ was evaluated by the Culture Fair Intelligence Test (CFIT) and work endurance was evaluated by the Kraepelin Test. The data was processed by correlation analysis. The results indicated that there was no statistically significant correlation between activity endurance and IQ (p > 0.05). This measurement shows that both intelligence and activity endurance are distinct psychological variables. This indicates that the cognitive element of a student’s personality may not be sufficient to explain the student’s ability to maintain prolonged academic effort.

Abstract

Traditional fishermen in coastal Indonesia continue to face persistent productivity constraints due to limited access to efficient fishing technology. This study investigates the utilization of ketinting engine assistance and its contribution to productivity improvement and socio-economic change among fishermen in Torombia Village, Kulisusu District, North Buton Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. A qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, involving village officials, representatives of the Marine and Fisheries Service, recipient fishermen, and non-recipient fishermen selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, while trustworthiness was ensured through source and method triangulation. The findings indicate that ketinting engine assistance improved operational efficiency, expanded access to more productive fishing grounds, and increased catch volume from 3–5 kg to more than 10 kg per day, along with better catch quality. The assistance also contributed to greater household financial stability, improved capacity to meet educational and healthcare needs, and reduced reliance on informal loans. The study concludes that appropriate technology, when supported by local institutions and social capital, can enhance the social functioning of coastal communities, although its long-term sustainability depends on continuous technical training and improved local spare-parts access.

Abstract

Indonesia, as the world’s largest archipelagic country, is characterized by extensive cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity. This plural social context requires inclusive journalistic practices that respect difference and promote intercultural understanding, as reflected in the principles of multicultural journalism. This study aims to examine how multicultural journalism is applied in the television documentary Threads of Indonesia, particularly in the episode Ngangsu Kawruh Sejatining Urip, which portrays the Pransoeh belief community in Muntilan, Magelang. The study employed a qualitative method with an interpretive approach to explore the community’s worldview and lived experiences. Data were collected through field observation, in-depth interviews with key informants, and documentation of community activities and teachings. The findings show that the documentary applies multicultural journalism through inclusive narration, contextual visual representation, the use of diverse sources, and a non-stereotypical portrayal of the Pransoeh community. The interpretive approach enables the documentary to present minority belief narratives in a respectful and meaningful way while conveying values of tolerance, empathy, and mutual respect. This study contributes to journalism and media studies by extending multicultural journalism beyond conventional news reporting into documentary-based audiovisual storytelling, particularly in representing minority belief communities in Indonesia.

Abstract

Achieving Indonesia Emas 2045 requires not only sustained economic growth but also effective governance in development planning and budgeting. However, persistent institutional fragmentation, weak coordination, and discrepancies between planning priorities and budget allocation continue to challenge policy effectiveness in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the governance of planning and budgeting in supporting the achievement of Indonesia Emas 2045. This study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review design. Data were collected from scholarly articles, policy documents, and official government reports, and analysed through content analysis. The findings show that the relationship between planning and budgeting in Indonesia is influenced not only by technical and administrative factors but also by broader institutional and political economy dynamics. Fragmentation between these functions may weaken policy coherence, reduce the effectiveness of public expenditure, and hinder long-term development goals. By integrating principal-agent and common-pool perspectives, this study offers a more comprehensive analytical framework for explaining the structural misalignment between development priorities and fiscal allocation. This study concludes that strengthening the integration of planning and budgeting is essential to improving policy consistency, expenditure quality, and fiscal effectiveness in support of Indonesia Emas 2045.
