Abstract

This research discusses the use of illocutionary speech acts in videos uploaded on Raymond Chin's YouTube channel. The main purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the types of illocutionary speech acts that appear, such as assertive, commissive, directive, expressive, and declarative. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of listening and recording, and data analysis through agih and padan methods. Assertive speech acts are used to convey the speakers' opinions and beliefs about social and political situations. Directive speech acts function to invite the audience to engage and think critically. Declarative speech acts are used to state facts or emphasize the speaker's views. Meanwhile, commissive speech acts show the speaker's ability or intention in responding to the topic being discussed, and expressive speech acts show the speaker's emotions, both in the form of appreciation and criticism. Raymond Chin utilizes various illocutionary strategies to deliver criticism in an analytical way, build audience engagement, and express his opinions politely and effectively in the context of digital communication.

Abstract

This study explores how cross-cultural communication in the digital era can serve as a strategy to reduce negative stereotypes against the Madurese community. Stereotypes portraying Madurese people as harsh or aggressive often circulate in digital spaces, reinforcing unfounded prejudices. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research involved interviews with ten informants, five Madurese individuals and five non-Madurese individuals who actively use digital media. The findings indicate that digital platforms can serve as effective spaces for fostering intercultural dialogue, offering more accurate representations of Madurese cultural values, and minimizing misunderstandings through digital cultural literacy. However, without proper management, digital media may also amplify harmful stereotypes. Therefore, cross-cultural communication strategies grounded in education, open dialogue, and government-supported policies are essential to cultivating inclusive digital spaces and promoting fairer intercultural understanding. This research highlights the importance of using digital communication to bridge cultural divides and address bias, especially in a diverse and multicultural society like Indonesia.

Abstract

. Poverty is a multidimensional problem that is not only related to economic aspects but also social and cultural. The Family Hope Program (PKH) in Makassar City is implemented as an effort to empower poor families through conditional assistance that requires active participation of recipients in fulfilling their children's education and health obligations. This study aims to analyze the construction of poverty discourse in the implementation of PKH, discourse contestation between social actors, and its impact on participation and legitimacy of the program. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach, involving in-depth interviews and participatory observations of 15 beneficiaries and 3 social assistants in Makassar. The results of the study show that the official discourse of poverty based on administrative data often ignores the complexity of the experiences of the poor, thus giving rise to resistance and the emergence of counter-discourses that demand recognition of local narratives. This contestation has an impact on the limited space for dialogue and community participation, which results in the social legitimacy of PKH becoming fragile. Social assistants play an important role in facilitating inclusive communication and empowerment of beneficiaries, increasing their sense of ownership and active participation. In conclusion, the success of PKH is highly dependent on the transformation of poverty discourse to be more responsive and inclusive, strengthening the capacity of facilitators, and building a participatory deliberative public space to strengthen the legitimacy and effectiveness of the program.

Abstract

In the context of globalization, film functions as a strategic medium for cultural exchange and the reinforcement of national identity. This study investigates 20th Century Girl (2022), a South Korean film distributed by Netflix, as a vehicle for intercultural communication and film-induced tourism. Employing a descriptive qualitative method and content analysis, the paper explores how narrative nostalgia, thematic depth, and cultural representation generate emotional engagement and stimulate interest in South Korea as a travel destination. The study also highlights the pivotal role of Netflix in globalizing Korean audiovisual content and strengthening the Korean Wave (Hallyu). Findings indicate that the film not only illustrates essential Korean cultural values such as the importance of friendship, family, and school traditions but also indirectly showcases cultural tourism assets, including filming locations and local lifestyles. These insights affirm the significance of cinema as a tool of cultural diplomacy and soft power for enhancing South Korea’s image on the global stage.

Abstract

The tourism sector is a strategic industry that plays a significant role in economic development. One of the most effective forms of tourism promotion is through film media. This study aims to examine the impact of the film 5 cm on the tourism sector in the Mount Semeru area. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collected through literature studies. The results indicate that the screening of the film 5 cm had a significant influence on the increase in tourist visits. Moreover, the film also affected tourists’ motivation to visit Mount Semeru. However, the surge in visitors following the film's release has led to various challenges, such as increased waste generation, pressure on environmental carrying capacity, and potential conflicts between conservation efforts and tourism activities. This study concludes that film-based promotion must be accompanied by sustainable tourism management to ensure that economic benefits do not come at the expense of environmental preservation..

Abstract

This article discusses the Paijo art group as a medium for the formation and expression of the identity of today’s youth or Generation Z through the arts, especially in the field of theater. The shift from the New Order to the Reform Era has created an atmosphere that can lead youth to lose direction in their quest for identity. During the New Order era, "Gondrong" became a symbol of youth at that time, representing resistance and freedom of expression. However, the Reform Era, which has brought youth into the rapid development of technology and information, has created a gap between the millennial and Generation Z. Amidst this advancement, Generation Z is faced with global cultures that were previously difficult to access, resulting in many choices that ultimately lead youth into a crisis of identity. While in the New Order, binding policies produced a uniform and clear identity. The Paijo Art Group emerges as a reflective medium for youth in the process of discovering their identity through a creative and collaborative spirit. The symbols and emblems within the Paijo art group carry strong meanings that underlie the formation of this distinctive art group. This research is conducted to explore the importance of future goals for young people and to rise together, accompanied by the passionate fighting spirit they manifest within the Paijo art group, promoting the symbols and ideology of the group.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of teenage communication in the film Dilan 1990 and its impact on the image of Bandung as a tourist destination. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and open-ended questionnaires, the research analyzes patterns of interpersonal communication between characters and viewers' emotional responses. Findings reveal that Dilan’s character demonstrates a poetic, humorous, and confident communication style, while Milea exhibits a more reflective and expressive approach. The balance of verbal and nonverbal language in the film fosters emotional closeness between the audience and the characters. Additionally, the portrayal of Bandung with a romantic and nostalgic atmosphere enhances its visual appeal, shaping a positive perception of the city. Filming locations such as Milea’s House, Warung Bi Eem, and Buah Batu Street have become tourist attractions through film-induced tourism. These findings indicate that film can serve as a strategic medium in constructing destination imagery through emotional and symbolic representation.
