Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of to know students’ speaking skills, especially in the component of speaking skills in the ninth grade of Junior High School 6 Jambi City. This research was designed using descriptive quantitative research methods. The population of this study was the ninth-grade students at Junior High School 6 Jambi City, and the sample was grade IX B students. This study uses a test as a research instrument. Then the test results are assessed. The test used is an oral test. The oral test is made with the theme of "My family" which is determined by this research. The learning method is through a speaking test in front of the class with the theme "My Family". The results of this study indicate the scores of the five components of speaking skills. The components of speaking skills are grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and pronunciation. The findings of this study indicate that the mean overall component of speaking skill score is 1,60. In the grammar component, 3 or 8,33% of students scored in the poor categories, 7 or 19,44% of students scored in the fair categories, 18 or 50% of students scored in the good categories, and in the excellent are 8 or 22,22%. In the vocabulary component, no one got scored poor, students scored in the fair categories are 11 or 30,55%, 18 or 50% of students scored in the good categories, and students scored in the excellent categories are 7 or 19.44%. In the comprehension component, no one got scored poor, 7 or 19,44% of students scored in the fair categories, 14 or 38.88% of students scored in the good categories, and in the excellent categories 15 or 41,66%In the fluency component, no one got scored poor, students scored in the fair categories are 8 or 22,22%, 16 or 44,44% of students scored in the good categories, 12 or 33,33% of students scored in the excellent categories. In the pronunciation component, no one got scored poor, 8 or 22,22% of students scored in the fair categories, 11 or 30.55% of students scored in the good categories, and 17 or 47,22% of students scored in the excellent categories. The mean and percentage values explain that the speaking skills of class IX students, especially class IX B at SMP Negeri 6 Jambi City is very good.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the difficulties on online learning in speaking skill.  The researcher used a descriptive qualitative design by taking the sample used simple random sampling and then obtained XII Science 5 with the total number of 36 students, unfortunately three students did not fill the online questionnaires. Thus, there were 33 students as a sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used an online questionnaire. The result of this study showed the students’ difficulties on online learning in speaking skill were: Pronouncing problems 66.6%, students having difficulty interacting with others 63.6%, limited vocabulary 57.5%, lack of grammar 54.5%, poor internet connection 48,4%, students have not enough understanding to explore and express their ideas 33.3%, furthermore the students lack of fluency 21.2%.Keywords: Online learning, Online questionnaires, Speaking difficulties.

Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of analyzing students' speaking skills, at ninth grade in Junior High School 2 Jambi City. This research was designed using descriptive quantitative research methods. The population of this study was the ninth-grade students at Junior High School 2 Jambi City, and the sample was grade IX D students. This research uses a test as a research instrument. Then the test results are assessed and. The test used is an oral test with paired dialogue. The dialogue is made with the theme of "family" which is determined by This Research. The learning method through dialogue between friends was chosen because This Research saw students in one class often communicating verbally with their classmates to avoid embarrassment and fear so that students dared to express their opinions to their classmates. Thus, this courage will encourage students to do something, including the willingness to speak in English. The highest average test score is in the vocabulary component, which is 2,5 which means it is still "Poor." While the lowest test average value is found in the pronunciation component, namely 1,43 which means "very poor." The average test scores in the other four components are also in the "Poor" category, with the average grammar scores is 2,43, fluency 1,75, comprehension 2,12 and task 1,93. The average value explains that the speaking skill of students in grade ninth, especially in class IX D at Junior High School 2 Jambi City, is still classified as "Poor."

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not there was any correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability of English language learners. The problem of this study referred to the correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability. The study was conducted at the A2 Class of Second Semester Students of English Education Study Program Faculty at Batanghari University Jambi. The population of the study was 15 active students who were studying as the member of a2 class on the second semester students of English Education Study Program Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Batanghari University Jambi in academic year 2019/2020. The sample of this study was all of the A2 class of the second semester students which consist of 15 students with 4 male and 11 female students. The types of the data were quantitative. The data were obtained by using self-confidence questionnaire and speaking test and analyzed by using manual correlation analysis with Pearson Product-Moment formula. Furthermore, it was revealed that r-obtained was (.73) which the researcher concluded that the H0was rejected and H1was accepted. The result concluded that there was a correlation between self-confidence and the speaking ability of the second semester students of English Education Study Program at Batanghari University Jambi.Keywords: Self-confidence, Speaking Ability.

Abstract

Reki Anggara; Wennyta; Khidayatul MunawwarohAbstractThis research aims to find out the kind of students errors in writing narrative text in the fourth semester students at English Education Program of Batanghari University year 2017/2018. This research using purposive sampling to get the sample from two class and then got the 4th semester A class with the total 25 students. In collecting the data, the instrument of this research is writing test by using narrative text with theme exeperience during holidays. The findings of this research showed that, the error analysis writing narrative text in language features and generic structure. In language features, the most of errors were past tense with 4,35% percentage of error from 25 students. In generic structure, the most of errors was spelling with 6,74% percentage of errors from 25 students and orientation no errors from 25 students. The researcher concluded that the error analysis on students’ writing narrative text made by fourth semester students A class at english education program of Batanghari University year 2018 is good because from 25 student only two dominant errors in narrative text are past tense and spelling.Keywords: Error Analysis, Writing, and Narrative Text

Abstract

Reading is the process of receiving interpreting information in language from via the medium of print. The purpose of this research is to analysis reading difficulties of narrative text in online learning by using Edmodo. The objective of this research is to identify the students’ difficulties. The research conducted at SMK N 4 Jambi in academic years 2019/2020. The population of this research is tenth grade students of fashion class II. Type of the research is qualitative the data were obtained by using online interview. Overall, the result of this research is most of the students have difficulties in understanding narrative text by using Edmodo application which the students argued that the explanation of the generic structure, language feature, finding main idea of the narrative text and students’ vocabularies are limited. But the difficulties could be solved by Edmodo communication tools which the teacher and all students could make the discussion about their difficulties, especially in learning reading narrative text.Keywords: Reading difficulties, Narrative text, Online Learning.

Abstract

This research aims to find The Correlation between Digital Literacy and Students’ Reading Comprehension at Eleventh Grade of Senior High School 1 Jambi. The design of this research is Descriptive Research method with Correlation Approach. This research conducted in Senior High School 1 Jambi. There were 32 respondents as sample of this research. The data in this research were collected by test and questionnaires. The test consisted of 20 multiple choice questions and questionnaires consisted of 16 statements in close- ended questionnaires. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the data to find the results by using Descriptive Statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Formula. The result of this research showed that there is correlation between Digital Literacy and Students' Reading Comprehension at Eleventh MIPA 5 where as significant value obtained 0,04. Therefore, in hypothesis 0.05 < hypothesis is accepted and 0.05 > hypothesis is rejected. As for the category of Digital Literacy and Students Reading Comprehension, Digital Literacy is at very high category. Meanwhile for Students' Reading Comprehension is at good category.

Abstract

Summative test is method of evaluation performed at the end of a unit that allows a teacher to measure a student's understanding, typically against standardized criteria. Therefore, to measure students' comprehension of the material learned, the item analysis of summative test is necessary. The research is aimed to find out the level of English Summative Test items for the eleventh grade students of SMAN 9 Kota Jambi 2018/2019. This research is categorized as quantitative method. The researcher took one class XI IPA 1 which consisted 32 members of student. The total number of the test is 40 items. This research is supported by ANATES 4.0 and Manual Counting to analyze item test. Based on item analysis and discussion, the reseacher found that the difficult item was six items ( 15% ) with the test numbers are 3, 6, 8, 26, 27, 29. Secondly, medium item was nineteen items (47,5%) with the test numbers are 1, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 15, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 37, 38, 39, 40. The last, the easy item was fifteen items ( 37,5%) with the test numbers are 2, 9, 12, 13, 14,16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 28, 30, 36. Most of the items were categorized as medium interpretation, and only a few in easy and difficult interpretation. It concluded that the total index level of the test is 0,59. Therefore, the summative test is categorized in medium level. The researcher concludes that the English summative test for eleventh grade at SMAN 9 Kota Jambi is not well enough yet and it has quite difficulties as well.Keywords: Item Analysis, English Summative Test.

Abstract

The purpose the of the research is to find out what are the communication strategy used by teacher in teaching English at SMPN 19 Kota Jambi in academic year 2017/2018. The method applied in conducting this research is descriptive qualitative. The subject of this research is four English teachers at SMPN 19 Kota Jambi. In collecting the data, the researcher use classroom observation and interview. The result of this research there are two communication strategies used by teachers while teaching English, namely two-ways communication and transactional communication. Based on the observation and interview result the researcher have concluded that the teacher often using various communication strategy in teaching English, namely two-ways communication and transactional communication. Moreover English teacher often use two-ways communication in teaching English rather than using transactional communication. Abstract

This study aims to determine analyze some students' ability about learning English in Destorel English Club of senior high school 8 in the city of Jambi. This research is a mix method research. The data collection technique was obtained through interview and recorded. The results showed that according to students learning English is very easy to understand if students want to learn to understand it, the interest of students of senior high school 8 Jambi city in receiving learning is also supported by learning support facilities such as books, English dictionaries, and other online English dictionary sites. In addition, the assignment given by the teacher also raises student ability.  Based on the research results, it can be concluded that according to students speaking ability in speaking English is very easy. Students' difficulties in receiving learning is also supported by supporting facilities for learning English such as books and dictionaries. Teachers always use two languages to interact with their students in learning English, namely by mixing Indonesian. Students always actively ask teachers and friends about learning English that students do not know, and students do not apply English in their daily life due to lack of vocabulary and lack confidence in interacting with other people in using English.
