Abstract

This study aims to find students' strategies in learning the simple past tense at tenth grade of Senior High School 1 Jambi City. In this study, this research used mixed methods and used an explanatory sequential research design. The total population of this research was the X MIPA of Senior High School 1 Jambi City. The sample was taken by using cluster sampling. The number of the sample were 36 students in class X MIPA 3. In collecting data, this research used questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study indicate that students in class X MIPA 3 are classified as medium in using language learning strategies with the average use of SILL is 3.15. Data analysis shows that students use all six of the categories of learning strategies; memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. However, metacognitive strategy is the strategy most often used by students with an average use of 3.68 or classified in the high category. From the interview results, it is known that in studying the simple past tense, students apply language learning strategies which include memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. However, of the six strategies, the memory strategy is the least used. Students apply these strategies in learning the simple past tense to help them overcome difficulties in learning the simple past tense and to better understand the use of the simple past tense orally and in writing.

Abstract

This research was done to find the Effect of Discussion Method of Students' Speaking Ability at Second Grade students at SMP N 6 Kota Jambi in Academic Year 2019/2020. The researcher used a quantitative method as the research methodology with a random sampling technique. The sample of this research was the second of social grade students' at SMP N 6 Kota Jambi. The instrument of this research was a discussion method. This study involved 70 students, as the object of the study and divided into two classes. Class VIII D concisting of 35 students' was assigned as the experiment class and class VIII B concisting of 35 students' was assigned as the control class. The data was collected by using speaking test. Students' speaking bility is effect after treatment discussion method which in proven with students' can speak in treatment process. The data are collected by using test, pre test and post test. Thus the alternative hypothesis is accepted, the value of t-test higher than the value of t-table (3,064 > 1,69). Based on the finding above, it can be concluded that discussion method has a significant Effect of students' Speaking Ability at the Second Grade Students of SMP N 6 Kota Jambi in Academic Year 2019/2020.Key Words: Discussion , Method, Speaking Ability.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this research is to find out the strategy used by the students at Seventh grade of SMPN 34 Muaro Jambi Academic Year 2017-2018 in learning vocabulary.This study isa qualitative research using descriptive. This study focused onthe strategy used by the students. The participants of this research are 4 students (2 male and 2 female students) of seventh grade in SMPN 34 Muaro Jambi in acaemic year 2017/2018. The instrument of this research is interview that consist of 11 questions. The result of this research showed that it can be concluded that the strategy used by the students to study vocabulary is asking for teacher’s help, learning new vocabulary in a group and keep saying the new vocabulary. Then, the suggestions are: 1) For students to keep using even to add the strategy to learn the new vocabulary so that it can improve their skill in English vocabulary especially, and 2) For English teacher, it is better if the teacher can increase and add some more strategy in teaching new vocabulary to the students. Keywords: Learning Strategy, Vocabulary

Abstract

This research aimed to find out what vowel and consonant sound are difficult to be pronounced by the students at the second semester class A2 of Batanghari University. This research is done in the form of sound recording. It employed a qualitative method that consisted of two kinds of test, there were text that consisted one paragraph and word list that include 86 items. The subject of the research was the second semester class of Batanghari University in academic year 2020 namely class A2 that consisted of 17 students. The data were collected through text and word list, and were analyzed qualitatively. The result of the research showed that the students at second semester class A2 of Batanghari University got some English vowel and consonant difficult to pronounce. The result showed that, the English vowel sound which difficult to pronounce by the students are: /ɪ/, /e/, /ɒ/, /˄/, /Ʊ/, /Ȝ:/, /ə/, /i:/, /u:/, /ɔ:/, /eə/, /eɪ/, /əƱ/, /aƱ/, /ɔɪ/, /ɪə/, /eə/ and /Ʊə/. There were ninety occurances of errors in pronouncing vowels made by the students by listen their sound record. And the English consonant sound which difficult to pronounce by the students are: /k/, /tʃ/, /f/, /s/, /ʃ/, /h/, /d/, /dȜ/, /v/, /Ȝ/, /m/, /n/, /ƞ/ and /w/. It was known that there were thirthy-eight occurances of error in pronouncing consonants made by the students. The higher percentage in symbol /ɪ/ with 13,28%, the errors happened in seventeen times. And the lower percentage is 0,78%, the errors happened in once in each symbol. It seen in symbol /Ȝ:/, /eə/, /eɪ/, /ɪə/, /f/, /s/, /ʃ/, /d/, /Ȝ/, and /w/. The students still make errors that caused by their first language or their mothertongue, language background of the students and learning process.Key Words: Error Analysis, Pronunciation, English Vowels and Consonants

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether there is any influence of probing-prompting learning model towards reading comprehension of English students at the eleventh grade of Senior High School No. 1 Jambi City. This type of research is a quasi-experimental with a total population of 347 people. Through simple random sampling technique, 34 students of Class XI IPS 2 were selected as the control class and 36 students of Class XI IPS 3 were selected as the experimental class. The technique of collecting data is by distributing questions to research respondents. In this research, the data analysis technique was using the t test on the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows version 25 program. The results of this research indicate that (1) students’ reading comprehension in English subject taught using the probing-prompting learning model obtained an arithmetic mean of 75.89; (2) students’ reading comprehension in English subject taught using the lecture-based learning model obtained an arithmetic mean of 69.24; and (3) students’ reading comprehension in English subject taught using the probing-prompting learning model are higher than students’ reading comprehension in English subject taught using lecture-based learning model with a value of Sig. 0.000 > 0.05. Furthermore, there is an influence on the use of the probing- prompting learning model towards students’ reading comprehension as evidenced by the increase in students’ learning outcomes.Keywords: Probing-Prompting Learning Model, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This research was done aimed at investigating if audio visual as a media more effect for the students skill in writing procedure text. The method of this research is quantitative. The population of the research is the eighth grade students of SMPN 5Kota Jambi. The researcher takes two classes of the eighth grade students as the sample from this research which were divided into two groups; experimental group (XIII A) and control group (XIII B). The XIIIA was taught by using Audio Visual as a media, while the XIII B was taught without Audio Visual as media. The instruments of collecting data are test: pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher used experimental design. The mean in control class of pre test is 71,66 and mean post test 75,66. The mean in experimental class of pre test is 74,33 and the mean post test is 84,83. Based on the calculation of the statistical analysis, it is found that the value of t-test was 4,05 is higher than the value of t-table 1,69 at the degree freedom (df 30-1) = 29 and the level of confidence 0,05 with for that reason, the alternative hypothesis is accepted, the researcher could interpret that it was significantly effective to improve students writing procedure text using Audio Visual in SMPN 5 Kota  Jambi.           Keywords: Writing, Procedure text, Audio Visual.

Abstract

AbstractThis research used 40 students of English Language Education Study Program of Faculty of Teachers Training and Education of Batanghari University Jambi year 2014 as the sample. Their Microteaching score and their supervisors’ assessment of their teaching performance in teaching practice in the form of 40 questions questionnaire were analyzed using statistical method. The result of correlation test showed that there is a positive influence of Microteaching score to the teaching skills of the students. The result of the coefficient of determination is 0.419, which means that variable Microteaching influenced the teaching skills of the students by 41.9% while the other 58.1% was influenced by other factors outside the scope of the research.Keywords: Microteaching, Student teacher, Teaching skills

Abstract

This study investigated the students’ perceptions in online learning toward reading comprehension at tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Jambi. A quantitative research design was used in this study. The participants are 36 students from tenth grade MIPA 4 of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Jambi. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 30 statements. Google Form was used to obtain the data and the result was used to analyze the data. As a result of the study, the researcher concluded that the benefits of online reading have had a substantial effect on the knowledge of students’ vocabulary, and the students have strongly focused on the educational evaluation they read during online learning. The data reported the highest percentage is 56% of the students strongly agreed that online media supported their activity in reading during online learning. However, the lowest percentage is 5% of the students disagreed that online media supported their activity in reading during online learning. The results show that the mean and standard deviation between students’ perceptions in online learning toward reading comprehension are 77.00 mean and 16,696 standard deviation, which is the standard deviation is higher than the mean. It shows that students' perceptions are considered positive because most of the students agree that online learning helped them to improve their reading comprehensions skills.Keywords: Students’ Perception, Online Learning, Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

This study analyzed about conversation obtained from Tangled movie. The conversation or dialogue of the movie of Tangled that speaker must follow conversational maxims. This study is aimed to describe the most frequently of maxim choice used by the main character in the movie of Tangled. In addition, this study is also discuss types of conversational maxim of Grice (1975) of the writer character used the movie of Tangled. The data found 33 data obtained from Tangled movie. Then the data analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative research method. The usage of the number is used to identify the mostly frequent of the maxim used in this study. The data consist of the maxims  are as maxim of quality 10 data , maxim of quantity 12 data, maxim of relation 5 data, maxim of manner 6 data. Those are aimed to cooperative conversation in the social life activity. This study can be concluded that the number of data found is 33 data. The maxim of quantity 12 data is the most frequently used in the dialogue. This shows that in the cooperative conversational in the social life activity is maxim of quantity. So, this study can be aimed that in daily conversation, quantity is very important to be used because this maxim is concerned with the amount of information an utterance conveys.The suggestion to the future researcher who interested in this area of pragmatics.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara capaian hasil belajar berbicara Bahasa Inggris mahasiswa/i dengan penguasaan kosakata pada mahasiswa/i semester 2 (dua) Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Batanghari tahun ajaran 2016/2017. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kuantitatif dengan menggunakan metoda Korelasi sederhana. Sampel penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa/i semester 2 (dua) Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP, Universitas Batanghari tahun ajaran 2016/2017 yang diambil secara keseluruhan. Untuk mengumpulkan data tentang capaian hasil belajar berbicara bahasa Inggris mahasiswa/I, peneliti menggunakan nilai semester dari hasil belajar mata kuliah Speaking 2 dan tes untuk mengetahui penguasaan kosakata mahasiswa/i. Data akan diolah menggunakan Pearson Product Moment (PPM) dengan menggunakan SPSS sebagai alat untuk menghitungnya. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, didapatkan hasil bahwa terdapat korelasi yang signifikan antara capaian hasil belajar berbicara Bahasa Inggris mahasiswa/i dengan penguasaan kosakata pada mahasiswa/i semester 2 (dua) Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Batanghari tahun ajaran 2016/2017 sebesar 0.585.
