Abstract

This study focuses on the difficulties faced by the second semester students of Batanghari University in reading comprehension. The purposes of the study were to find out the difficulties faced by the second semester students Batanghari University and to find out the factors of difficulties in reading comprehension. The method applied was descriptive quantitative, where the test and questionnaire were used as the instrument data collection methods. The test consisted of 15 question items divided into three kinds of test and 20 questionnaires, which were descriptive text, narrative text and recount text. Index difficulty and percentage were used to analyze the data. The result of the test showed that the majority of the second semester of Batanghari University found difficulties including answering main idea, making inference, and locating reference questions. The most difficult aspect that encountered by the second semester students of Batanghari University was finding main idea questions, because the located main idea was difficult to find. In addition, based on the students’ responses in questionnaire, they mostly got difficulties in understanding vocabulary, background of knowledge, the difficulty in understanding long sentences, lack of working memory, less motivation/attention to learning reading, lack of knowledge of strategies in reading comprehension.Keyword: Students Difficulties, Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

The ability of students to understand the learning material is important. When students are able to understand the material given by the teacher, then they can apply the knowledge theoretically or in action. A simple way to check students' understanding or ability is through written assessments and student skills. This research was appointed to find out how far the students' ability in understanding grammar, in this case is the Simple Future Tense. This study uses quantitative as a research design and descriptive as research methodology. This study took a population of tenth graders at SMA 3 Jambi City in the 2021/2022 academic year and the sample was students in class X MIPA 6 in the 2021/2022 academic year. This study uses a test given to the respondents as a research instrument, then the results of the test are assessed and analyzed. The average value of the test obtained is 56.27. On the other hand, the value of the standard deviation obtained is 33.017. As a result, 11 respondents from the sample received the predicate "very good". 9 respondents received the “poor” predicate, followed by 5 respondents received the “very poor” predicate. 3 respondents received the predicate "good" and 2 respondents received the predicate "moderate". However, it should be noted that many errors occurred in the second part of the test where many of the respondents made a mistake in arranging one complete sentence with a percentage of 57.78% incorrect answers. This is inversely proportional to the test in the multiple-choice section, where the percentage of correct answers reaches 77.33%. In addition, although 11 respondents received a very good predicate, the collective average value shown is not a satisfactory result and is still categorized as "moderate". The difference between the mean and standard deviation shows that the data obtained are heterogeneous with most of them being below the sample mean.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the effects of using interactive multimedia at the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Jambi City in the academic year of 2019. The subject research was class VIIIB and VIIID. The instrument used in this thesis was test. In collecting the data, the researcher used pre-test. Before conducting post-test, the researcher gave treatment. After getting enough data, the researcher calculated the data using t-test. The result of this research was found the mean score of pre-test of Experiment class is 45.02 and the mean of post-test 80.48. To see whether the hypothesis is accepted or rejected, the significance value in the table above was .306, which means that the significance value is greater than 0.05, based on decision in the statistical correlation test, there is no relationship between pre-test and post-test. Paired sample t-test is used to determine whether there are difference can be seen from the sig value (2-tailed), the value in the table above is 0.000, so it can be concluded that the results of the effects of using Interactive Multimedia to increase students’ vocabulary are real significant on the pre-test and post-test data. Based on the result finding, it can be concluded that the data presented is there is an effects of using interactive multimedia towards students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to measure the difficulty level of the English semester test items for the tenth grade students at SMA N 3 Jambi City in the academic year 2016/2017. The sample is 40 students of tenth grade science two and taken by random sampling with lottery. This study is conducted to analyze the test items whether it is conclude in easy, moderate, or difficult items. This study is categorized in mix method research, those are quantitative and qualitative. The instrument used in this study is documentation. The researcher take 40 students’ answer sheets as the data that will be counted how many respondents can answer of each item and has been counted by using formula. The research find that there are 35 items in easy level, 2 items in moderate level, and 3 items in difficult items. And all the items can be said in easy level with the result 0,85 index of difficulty. The researcher also find that there are 12 valid items, and 28 invalid items.Keywords: English Semester Test, Item Analysis, Difficulty Level.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to know how the students’ perception toward learning vocabulary by using U-Dictionary application at the first grade students of SMAN 3 Jambi. This research is uses qualitative as the design of this research. The setting of this research is located at Jl. Guru Mukhtar Kota Jambi. The subject of the research is students in X science 1 with the total number 30 students but it takes 6 students in purposive sampling. The instrument of this research is used interview. Data were collected by using interview and analyzed by using code technique. Based on the results of interview all of the students prefer to use U-Dictionary application to learn vocabulary than the printed dictionaries. The use of U-Dictionary application had positive and negative effect for students such as students are easier to understand and more practical, the students can learning English form unknown become know, U-Dictionary application added some new words, it can made the students’ refresh, it can be used anytime and anywhere and suitable for current digital era. While negative effect such as, the students felt annoyed by many advertisements that appear on the U-Dictionary application, the students felt that sometimes in the conversation feature the students’ voice are not detected, and the students felt that when their handphone battery runs out then they are automatically cannot use the U-Dictionary application. Finally, more students stated positive perception than negative perception.Key words: Students’ perception, Vocabulary, U-Dictionary application

Abstract

This research used qualitative research. The researcher used personality traits teory to analysis main character in Cinderella movie. After watching movie and read the script, the reseacher concludes four points from five points of personality traits that areoppeness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness of Cinderella as main character in the movie. That are likes to meet the new people, independent, humble, friendly, enthusiastic, keep the spirit, loving, care, seccumb, helpful, forgiving. It can be concluded that Cinderella is only classified into four types out of five, and it is explained by the behavior and dialogue in Cinderlla movie. It is suggested tofor the future researchers who are interested in deeperstudying about character and characterization of the movie especially on the similar movie. The future researchers can use this research as a reference.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this study was to find out the influence of learning motivation towards English learning achievement. This study involved 269 students of eleventh grade, the sample was 40 students of eleventh grade science six at SMA N 3 Jambi City academic year 2017/2018 and taken by random sampling with lottery. There were two variables in this study, they were learning motivation and English learning achievement with 6 total indicators. The method of this study was survey method of quantitative research. Instrument used in this study was questionnaire and documentation. The research found that mean of students motivation from the questionnaire was valued 81,6 in good category. From the findings, it showed that there was no significant influence of learning motivation towards English learning achievement. Based on the analysis of data, the value of tcount is -0,052 ˂ ttable 2,024 in significance 0,025 line 38 counted by SPSS for Windows Version 16.Keywords: Learning motivation, English learning achievement

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out what are the learning style used by the students at the Eleventh Grade of Senior High School 3 Jambi City. The research methodology of this study was quantitative descriptive research which involved population and sample. The total population of this research was the XI MIPA 1 students of Senior High School 3 Jambi City, which consisted of 28 students. In collecting the data, This research gave questionner as the instrument to collect the data at the class. The result of the research showed that the eleventh grade students of Senior High School 3 Jambi City learn English vocabulary in various ways. Moreover, the students with the highest percentage was found in auditory learning style (43%), then followed by visual learning style (21%), and the last kinesthetic learning style (21%). This research also found some students with multiple learning style which is visual/kinesthetic learning style (11%) and auditory/kinesthetic learning style (4%). This research concluded that students have different learning style in learning English, and they have a different way of developing their English skills in learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analize students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text. The problem of this research is students’ difficulties in generic structure, language feature, lack of vocabulary and arranging sentences in writing descriptive text. The objective of this research is to identify the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text. The research conducted at SMK Negeri 4 Jambi in academic years 2019/2020. The population of this research is tenth grade student of fashion class IV. The sample is all of the fashion class IV at the tenth grade which the total number of students are 33 female students. The type of the research is qualitative descriptive. The data were obtained by using online questionnaire by using google forms. Overall, the result of this research is 60% students have difficulties on language feature. While, 30% students have difficulties in generic structure which is as same as the students are who have limited vocabulary in writing descriptive text. Moreover, the biggest percentages which are majority of students have difficulties on arranging sentences to be paragraph.Keywords: An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties of Writing Descriptive Text.

Abstract

The purpose of conducting this research is to know the student’s errors in writting descriptive text at seventh grade of SMP Laboratorium Jambi City. The research design of this research is quantitative with descriptive approach. The method used in this study is a qualitative description. Fifteen seventh-grade junior high school students were the subjects in this study. The population of this research are 10 students and research used total sampling technique. The data of this research were collected through the test. The data were analyzed by using descriptive quantitative. The result showed that the seventh grade of SMP Laboratorium Jambi City, there are still some mistakes in writing descriptive texts about people, animals, and objects.
